ABSTRACT OF THE STUDY English Language: A Medium to Success Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila BSBA Major in Marketing Management I-41 Roselyn Ann Grace M. Ibaňez 26 February 2011

Success, defined as the degree of attaining one‟s goal or simply, being successful is the first and sometimes, the only thing a person wants. English language, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant language or in some instances even the required international language of communications, science, information technology, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. Nowadays, English language is associated with the term success. It‟s because of the fact that as time goes by and as people grew older, they tend to look for a better enhancement of the language. They demand to speak and communicate with the language because they believe that it is the only way to achieve their success. This study will revolve around knowing how English language is connected with success. This research wants to answer some questions like What are the importance

4|Page

of English language on attaining one‟s success and in what ways does English language help an individual on his everyday living. Surveys and series of observations was conducted and the proponent of this study found out that most of the people, some students of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, to be specific, believes that English language has many importance regarding the achievement of one‟s success. One of these is an individual will have the ability to communicate with other people around the world. Second is English language gives an individual greater chances to find and get a job suitable for their specialized careers. And the most important, English language boosts an individual‟s selfconfidence. He can face other people without fear and shame because he has the ability to speak and communicate with the language well. This study also found out that English language provides greater help in an individual‟s everyday life. Because of individual‟s continuous quest for global competencies and success including the enhancement of their ability to speak he English language and to use it in finding a job, this research project is indeed subject from recommendation for better results.

It can be advised to further explore areas where the English language can be used in the various learning contexts; academic, experiential and relational. Also, for better analysis of the role of English language in individual‟s success, it can be recommended to use the language in training employees so that they can use the language effectively.
5|Page

And finally, people from both professional and non-professional era must give enough value o the English language apparently by using and applying the language on certain areas stated in the former part.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study :

Since time immemorial, people have been in continuous quest for global competitiveness. This includes the enhancement of their ability to speak the English language and to use it effectively – mostly out of their desire to work and participate in the international scene. Companies often hire applicants who have the ability to communicate with the said language, everyone will think of you as a smart and intelligent person. There are different English Language levels. This rubric provides English language level guidelines and expectations for learners at four different levels. Speaking and pronunciation, reading, writing and listening skills and capabilities are described in detail for each of these levels to help teachers and learners establish the correct English

10 | P a g e

This term paper is all about English language and why it is considered as a medium to success. This will benefit the following departments: • University Research Department They can use this material for additional preferences and it can provide it to students who needed references. • CLA English Department This can be used and stored for future researches ; and also, to innovate their textbooks by inserting new topics written on this material. • The Students It will serve as their guide in making their own research paper. It will also serve as their future reference. • Future Researchers This will serve as one of their references on widening up their topic and to get some sort of ideas on how a “real research paper” is created.

Definition of Terms : Success- the degree of attaining one‟s goal.

11 | P a g e

Language- may refer either to the specifically human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication, or to a specific instance of such a system of complex communication.

Lingua Franca- is a language systematically used to make communication possible between people not sharing a mother tongue, in particular when it is a third language, distinct from both mother tongues.

This can also be referred to as working language or bridge language.

Business- is an organization designed to provide goods, services, or both to consumers.[1] Businesses are predominant in capitalist economies, in which most of them are privately owned and formed to earn profit to increase the wealth of their owners. Mobility- the ability of individuals within a society to move between different social levels Career- is an individual's "course or progress through life (or a distinct portion of life)". It is usually considered to pertain to remunerative work (and sometimes also formal education).

Core Theory : “ English is the world’s most complete language with or one million words.
12 | P a g e

More importantly, English is the world’s most unifying language. ”

This study will be revolving around the English language as a universal medium and a tool to success. To accomplish this, the proponent of this research had looked upon the various materials and resources wherein different aspects of life and quotations connected with the learning of English language are exposed. This process increases a person‟s achievement and self-esteem because he/she can communicate with other people globally. Thus, it is necessary and important to look upon the relationship of English ― being the universal language and medium in various fields and careers one may be pursuing.

Conceptual Framework : The conceptual approach of this study involves how people, particularly the professionals think that English language is the overall medium to create a name in every field a man may pursue. In connection to this, one of the reporters from the Manila Bulletin, Merlina Hernando, states that aside from opening various opportunities in different fields and industries, globalization has made the English language as one of the most sought-after commodities today. “ ..... big companies, both here and abroad are now looking for good English communication skills
13 | P a g e

among potential employees.” Being fluent in the language is now one of the top requirements one must have before getting a job of his/her choice and to be a successful one. “ English tends to intensify the liberties and privileges of those who speak it.” The power of English language to intensify or improve the standing of a person or a company at a certain level is the main reason why company owners mostly hire English-speaking employees. In Asia, Philippines is now considered as one of the largest English speaking countries primarily due to the country‟s history of invasion and influence of Western Culture.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Success, defined as the degree of attaining one‟s goal or simply, being successful is the first and sometimes, the only thing a person wants. But, not everyone has the ability to achieve this so-called “eudaimonia” or in simple manner, unending happiness because the “world of success” allows only those who are smart and intellect and familiar with at least 3 foreign languages.

One of the most-required and highly-needed language in various fields is the English language because it is the major language of the world‟s richest country. This leads to the extensive training of different nationalities to master English language.

English language, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant language or in some instances even the required international language of communications, science, information technology, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. Its spread beyond the British Isles began with the growth of the British Empire, and by the late 19th century its reach was truly global. Following the British colonization of North America, it became the dominant language in the United States and in Canada.

A working knowledge of English has become a requirement in a number of fields, occupations and professions such as medicine and computing; as a

16 | P a g e

consequence over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level. Being fluent in the language is now one of the top requirements one must have before getting a job. The demand for English language has become more prevalent because it connects people of different races. English is the world‟s most complete language with more than one million words. More importantly, English is the world‟s most unifying language. This means that no matter how many language or dialects the world has, English will still and will always be the best language worldwide.

But, English fosters inequality and unnecessarily. It distinguishes. And distinction means, in many cases, unequal opportunities. Speakers of the English language have more opportunities for public service and government employment than others. And to prevent such unequal thing, “ English language will be an access to knowledge,

social mobility and language to workforce,

adding that all books and manuscripts will be

written and presented in English while the language of commerce will also be English.”

This means that by making English the major language of education and making knowledgeable articles, everyone will have the opportunity to learn the said language

17 | P a g e

and familiarize themselves with some English words easier and faster by reading books and manuscripts.

English is one of the most important languages in the world. It can even be said o be the single most important language. Yes, other languages are important too, but not for the same reasons as English is important. English is important because it is, maybe, the only language that truly links the whole world together. If not for English, the whole world may not be as united as it is today. The other languages may be important for their local values and culture. English can be used as a language in any part of the world. This is because at least a few people in each locality would know the language. Though these people might not have the same accent as others, the language at least will be understandable. There are various reasons for the importance of English language. They are listed below. 1. Travel: When a person travels to another part of the world either for the sake of business or even as a tourist, the languages may differ. In these conditions, English is the language that helps people to deal with the situation. It is like a universal language. 2. Same country: In countries like India, where the land is so vast with people of various cultures live, the languages of each part of the country also differ. Under the circumstances, English can be the only link as people in each place will not be able to learn all the other languages to communicate with the people. English bridges this gap and connects the people.
18 | P a g e

3. Education / Studies: The presence of English as a universal language assumes importance in the fact that more and more people leave their countries not only for the sake of business and pleasure, but also for studying. Education has increased the role of English. People who go to another country to study can only have English as their medium of study. This is because the individual will not be able to learn a subject in the local language of the country. This again reinforces the fact that English language is very important. 4. Correspondence: All correspondences between offices in different countries and also between political leaders of various countries is in English. This linking factor also tells of the importance of English language. 5. Internet: In spite of the growth of Internet in various languages, English is the mainstay of the Internet users. This is the language in which most of the information and websites are available. It is very difficult to translate each and every relevant webpage into the language of various countries. With Internet becoming very important in E commerce and also in education, English language is bound to grow. Thus the importance of English as a language is emphasized.

The future of English as a language is very secure. In this era of consolidation and trying to unify various aspects of life, it will not be long before English can be made as a single language of the world like the single currency and the union of various nations

19 | P a g e

Foreign Literature

As the time went by, English language became the primary acceptable language worldwide. It is now known as the world‟s lingua franca. Language is the expression of human personality in words whether written or spoken. It is the universal medium alike for conveying the common facts and feelings of everyday life (C.L. Wrenn, 1988). This means that the most common language in worldwide communication is the English Language. It is now the main language of expressing personality of different races.

Different countries worldwide have many different languages which only the natives of a certain nation knows how to speak unlike English which is known by everyone because it is a part of school education. English is reckoned as a prestigious language and the tounge of first choice and continues as a medium of instruction in elite schools at every level. (R.K. Mishra, 2001). English continues to be the premier and prestigious language in higher education because the resource and guidance available in this language are abundant compared to that available in the regional languages or even the national language. Careers in business and commerce, government positions of high rank, and science and technology which attract the brightest, continue to require fluency in English. English is another passport and provides the visa for overseas study. (C.L. Connolly, 1999).

Business firms are now requiring all of their employees to learn English Language because it is one way of showing competence against rival businesses. Whether you work for a business, or a government or other type of organisation, you may be in a job that requires meeting people from outside of the organisation or talking
20 | P a g e

to them over the telephone. Good communication skills take on a dual role in those cases, as you represent the organization as well as yourself, so your effectiveness is doubly important. Firstly to the image of the company or organization, and secondly to your career success. (W.L. Whitman, 2004)

Realizing the importance of this imported language which can bring benefit to the society and the nation, the people around the world is now learning the English language. The commission is of the opinion that “In the 21st century marketplace, languages are the new bargaining chips. They are tools of trade, no less or more; that is precisely why we must embrace them.” Learned and Scholar do feel that “Linguistic proficiency is the key to unlock doors of access and opportunities in a world where borders are blurring at a blink.” (J.L Brickman, 1999)

Local Literature

English language is now one of the primary language here in the Philippines. It is the medium of education because all books used in schools and universities were written in the said language. But not all of the facts and ideas written about English is true, that‟s why some people wants to clear the wrong ideas like Taytay Mayor Joric Gacula who stated that:“ The national government, particularly the Department of Education should strongly consider „minor revisions‟ in the academic curriculum of courses, which requires proficiency in English language.”

21 | P a g e

Meanwhile, Ignacio Bunye and Former President and Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo made out their point that: “ English in reality, should be the medium of instruction.

This is for us to be globally competitive and so as to help in boosting our economic status.

This is because big companies, both here and abroad are now looking for good English communication skills among potential employees. Not bad for the Filipinos because, and according to Theresa Torres of Manila Times, “Filipinos are usually learning verbally based and undoubtedly good in speaking and writing.”

Filipinos tend to cope up with the environment outside their country because they can speak in English as fluent as those people living abroad, or, they are much better in speaking the language than those of living in the neighboring countries. That‟s why Filipinos find a job and then succeed outside Philippines.

But not all Filipinos succeed abroad and even here in the Philippines. According to Bambina Buenaventura of English for International Communication,“ Every year, thousands of young Filipino graduates end up jobless no matter what university they came from. The battle of who knows more and who is best among these graduates in their chosen field is not the only basis that any company is looking for and when applying for a job, good communication skills is in English a requirement”

22 | P a g e

In this case, Filipinos tend to focus their attention in studying English language and due to that, they sometimes forget that they have their own language. It is all because they want to succeed and create their own names to be known and respect worldwide. According to Blas Ople,“ Filipinos have no choice but to accept the burden of our language destiny.”

The language stated above is the Filipino language, which is nowadays, looks like just the second language of the Philippines. This is not only happening here in the Philippines but also in different parts of the globe.

To make the story short, English language is now considered as the pioneer language of the business field and a stepping stone to success. To prove this statement, lots of writers, broadcast reporters and business tycoons were not all Americans. Most commonly, they were those who just studied English language who made it on top.

To prove that there are Filipinos who succeed because of English language, here are the two most recognized personalities.

Myleen Klass : Fil-Brit Model Hosts New CNN Program . became one of the newest CNN reporters because of her language skills.

Peterson Jason Pascual: Editor of Oprah Magazine - works as an editor of O, The Oprah Magazine owned by billionaire, philanthropist and award-winning talk show host Oprah Winfrey. He considers himself amazingly blessed to have this opportunity to get hired as accessories assistant for the lifestyle and fashion magazine that has become
23 | P a g e

so popular worldwide. (Goodnews Pilipinas). He made it to O because of his astonishing skills in writing articles in an English medium.

RELATED STUDIES

Foreign Studies: The English language has unmistakably achieved status as the world‟s lingua franca through globalization. English is now the official or dominant language for two billion people in at least 75 countries. According to British Council, speakers of English as a second language probably outnumber those who speak it as a first language. English is the most common language to communicate scientific, technological, academic and international trade information. English is clearly the world‟s lingua franca but how did it get that way? Part of the reason is the feedback loop driving its history ― a dynamic which may serve to illustrate how globalization often is the result of a natural course of events: before English is infiltrated the world, many of the world‟s language infiltrated English.

Globalization of the IT marketplace is accelerating the effect of English as a commodity. For decades, English has dominated the IT history, from research and development, to the design of hardware and software. In 2002, there were signs that impact of China‟s interest in respecting international intellectual property rights heralded a new era of China-led technology standards which would slow down the monopoly of technologies made primarily for English speakers. A new culture of IT researchers had
24 | P a g e

developed in China which has not built on US trained engineers. However, more recently, India, which once was very concerned about China‟s enthusiasm for changing standards in the IT industry, now sees the threat as fading ― partly due to Indian businesses assuming that China will take a long time to catch up in English language proficiency, and India‟s dominance of outsourcing industry which was worn on large part because of their command of the English language. ( Olsen & Brown, 2002 ) The paragraph stated that English is the world‟s lingua franca. It had been elaborated that English is playing a big role in globalization and in the IT marketplace.

Local Studies:

Every year, thousands of young Filipino graduates end up jobless, no matter what university they came from. The battle of who knows more and who is best among these graduates in their chosen field is not the only basis that any company is looking for and when applying for a job, good communication skills is in English a requirement. (Buenaventura , 1987 )

Big companies both here and abroad are now looking for good English communication skills among potential employees.

This explains how English proficiency has been a requirement for job qualifications. It also explained on how companies filter out applicants according to their communication skills as an additional advantage for qualification.

25 | P a g e

English is the language of power and progress. In the Philippines, it is highly valued not only because it is functional and practical and washes over constantly, but more importantly, because it is an affordable item, a skill that can be used to increase one‟s position, respectability and marketability. In most cases, the better one‟s ability to understand and use English, the better one‟s chances of career advancement. This is true for both extreme of the socio-economic ladder.

26 | P a g e

CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY Procedures : This study investigated why English language has been one of the most soughtafter commodities today especially in the business world. To determine the people‟s insights on the English language, the following steps were utilized. 1. Aside from the university library, the researcher has likewise ventured in the library of Manila library and in the National Library. Books, articles and journals written in response to the growing need for English as a medium of instruction have been of great significance for this research.

2. The proponent of this research also endeavoured to search the internet. This proved to be precarious, since information tends to be unclassified and may contain data, which may not be factual and accurate. Nonetheless, the researcher has assured data credibility through browsing on legitimate internet sites, containing journals and articles written by people known to be authorities in the field. Some of the sites include: http://www.princeton review.com/college/research/majors/majorBasics.asp, http://www.ebalita.net/go/news/news.php?id=2411. 3. The researcher also conducted a survey in coming up with the result of this research. The researcher used random sampling in coming up with the result of this research. The researcher used random sampling in identifying the
27 | P a g e

respondents to be surveyed. Data treatment and analysis took place after the information is sorted out. The data that have been gathered from various sources are then collected and evaluated.

Locale of the Study : The data gathering are conducted at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila,. Manila Library and National Library. The researcher locale centered on the PLM University Campus for convenience. It focused on the different opinions of students regarding English language as a means of finding a job.

Samplings Used : Factual and relevant data in this study were taken from students who are studying at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Convenient sampling was used under the non-random category where all the English-fluent people present during the administration of the questionnaires were used as samples.

28 | P a g e

Statistical Tool Used : In order to find out the weight of frequency of respondents gathered, the percentage formula was applied: Formula(percentage) P= (f/N) x 100 Where: P= percentage N= total number of respondents F= frequency

Accurate P= 65/100 x 100= 65 % N= total number of respondents F= frequency

Not Accurate P= 35/100 x 100= 35 %

29 | P a g e

Respondents of the Study : The respondents of the study are the selected students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila who are taking business-related courses.

Time Frame : The time used in the collection of data is two weeks, starting from January 31 to February 16. The researcher has walked high and low in convincing the respondents in answering the survey.

30 | P a g e

CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Summary: Based on the survey conducted by the researcher, it was found out that most of the students believe that English language helps people to enhance their vocabulary and enriches the minds of every speaker of the language. The researcher also found out that many agreed that English language can help people achieve their goals.
