Applying for an Australia Awards Scholarship
Australia Awards Scholarships in Papua New Guinea
Australia’s international development assistance in Papua
New Guinea aims to further develop the skills and
expertise of Papua New Guineans to better enable positive
contributions to their country’s development.
Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international
awards offered by the Australian Government to the next
generation of global leaders for development. Through
study and research, recipients develop the skills and
knowledge to drive change and help build enduring
people-to-people links with Australia.
Applicants will be assessed for their professional and
personal qualities, academic competence and, most
importantly, their potential to positively impact on
development challenges in Papua New Guinea.
Applications are strongly encouraged from women, people
with disability and people living and working in rural parts
of Papua New Guinea.
Priority fields of study
The priority areas of study for Papua New Guinea are:
Health:
Allied Health (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy,
Speech Therapy), Health Management, Planning or
Research, HIV AIDS, STIs and Sexual Health.
Transport:
Aviation: (non-flying), Airport Management, Security and
Emergency, Air Worthiness Inspection and Certification.
Infrastructure: Civil or Maintenance airports, ports, roads.
Road Safety: data collection and analysis, black spot
audit, management and infrastructure design.
Land Development:
Regional and Town Planning.
Rural Development:
Veterinary Science, Animal Science and Husbandry.
Research and Technology:
Data Management and Analysis, Actuarial Studies.
Education:
Curriculum Development and Teaching Methodologies
(Basic, Secondary, TVET, Higher Education), Education
Policy and Development, Specialist Teaching
(Disabilities), Student Guidance and Counselling,
Teacher Education for Higher Education, Research or

Papua New Guinea: Information about Australia Awards Scholarships
Level of study
Australia Awards Scholarships
These Scholarships provide citizens of Papua New Guinea
with the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate or
postgraduate qualification at an Australian tertiary
institution.
A small number of awards will be provided for PhD level
study with the objective of building capacity within PNG’s
higher education system and/or where a clear link to
critical development needs is identified.
The majority of awards will be for Postgraduate study
(Graduate Diploma and Masters level qualifications).
Undergraduate awards will only be considered on the
basis of outstanding merit in addressing a priority field of
study and/or applicants from targeted groups.
Approximately 70% of awards are offered to the Open
category with 30% offered to the Public category.
Awards are equally distributed between men and women.

Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships
These scholarships provide opportunities to people from
Papua New Guinea and other developing nations in the
Pacific to study at a tertiary institution in the Pacific for the
benefit of development in their home countries. This type
of scholarship is available for study at the undergraduate
and postgraduate level.
Eligibility criteria are available from the Australia Awards
PNG Facility website (www.australiaawards.org.pg).
Australia Awards Benefits
Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the
minimum period necessary for the individual to complete
the academic program specified by the Australian
education institution, including any preparatory training.
Scholarship recipients will generally receive:
• return air travel
• a one off establishment allowance on arrival
• full tuition fees
• contribution to living expenses
• introductory academic program
• Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the
Scholarship
• supplementary academic support and
• fieldwork allowance (for research students only).

requirements detailed in the Scholarships Policy

Special conditions
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, Public
category candidates from Papua New Guinea must also
meet a range of the Papua New Guinea Department of
Personnel Management requirements including:
• be employed in a public sector agency for two years;
and
• be nominated by your employment agency and
endorsed by the Department of Personnel
Management.
Papua New Guinea Public Sector applicants should
familiarise themselves with General Order, No. 6 available
from the Department of Personnel Management’s website
www.dpm.gov.pg/.

in 2015)
Opening date: 20 January 2014
Closing date: 30 April 2014
Applications or supporting documents received after this
date will not be considered.

Applications will be made available through the following
agencies:
1. Department of Personal Management – who will send
through to all Provincial Administrations ONLY.
2. National Training Council.
3. Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade co-located
offices in designated provincial administrations.

The selection process
Following eligibility and compliance checking,
applications will be processed. The selection process will
include an interview. Applicants will be assessed against
the following criteria:
• Academic competence.
• Potential outcome, including contribution to
development outcomes in your home country.
• Professional and personal leadership attributes.
Preparatory training
• All successful applicants will be required to attend
a pre-departure briefing
• You may be required to complete the following
preparatory training and/or testing:
• IELTS-International English Language Testing
System to assess English language
competence.
• Basic computer skills training.
Outcomes
It is anticipated that applicants will receive notification as
to whether they have successfully progressed to the next
stage by the end of May 2014 and that that the outcomes
of the selection process will be published in the Papua
New Guinea National press in late July, 2014.
