.-'1 eND PART ONe.
" One of my favorite short·lived shows is
Boomtown, which lasted a little over
one season on NBC from 2002·2004.
Created by Graham Yost (who is
currently working on another fantastic
series, Justified), the show is
essentially a crime procedural, but
with a unique twist·· it employs a
Rashomon·like multiple POV format.
Set in Los Angeles, Boomtown follows
cops, attorneys, reporters, paramedics,
and even criminals, and each story is
told from all of their points-of-view.
But here's t he t hing -- t he show's
gimmick is entirely unnecessary. What
makes the show so great is the
charact ers (and the act ors portraying
t hem),all of whom are incredibly well·
developed and nuanced.
The cast is led by Joel Stevens (played
by Donnie Walhberg), t he self· righteous
and apparent ly·f1awless detective who
hides t he f act t hat his marriage is a
wreck. He finds hi mself increasingly
drawn to paramedic Teresa Ortiz (Lana
Parrill a). Joel's partner is "Fearless"
Bobby Smi t h (Mykel t i Will iamson),a
detective and GulfWar vet who li ves in
a seedy motel and is constant ly
checking things off his list of t hings he
wants t o do before he dies. David
McNorris (Neal McDonough) is an
alcoholi c Deputy Distri ct Attorney
who's cheat ing on his wife with
invest igat ive reporter Andrea Li ttle
(Nina Garbiras). The two uniformed
cops on the show are Offi cer Ray
Hechler (Gary Basaraba), who McNorris
tried t o implicate in a corrupt ion
scandal, and Officer Tom Turcotte (Jason
Gedrick), who has had a ri val ry wi t h Joel
ever since the academy.
Pretty much every member of t he cast
has an interesting backst ory, and many
of the charact ers have complex
histories ·· and conflict s _. with ot her
charact ers. And what makes these
confli cts so compelli ng is t hat the show
never tells you who's ri ght. For
inst ance, we hear lots of talk about how
DDA David McNorris implicated Officer
Ray Hechler in a pol ice corruption
scandal, and while Ray was not
successfully prosecuted, it's never
established if he was act uall y innocent.
And the rivalry between Det. Joel
St evens and Offi cer Tom Turcotte is
equall y fascinating. We get that t hey
went to t he academy together, and
si nce then Joel has risen to t he rank of
Det ect ive, while Tom is still in uniform.
We get t hat Joel considers Tom kind of
an underachiever, and Tom considers
Joel condescending. And t he way the
charact ers are presented, we can see
how they each feel t hat way. We never
reall y sense the wri t er's thumb on t he
scale, telling us how to feel about a
certain charact er.
The early epi sodes of t he show leaned
pretty heavi ly on the "multipl e POV"
approach, with stories frequently
starti ng in media res, and events airing
out of order. It wasn't until the end of
t he episode t hat you'd get the whole
pict ure of what actually happened. As
t he season progressed, t his approach
was t oned down. St ori es still feat ured
mult iple POVs, but the stori es
themselves unfolded in a more linear
fashion.
Boomtown's pilot was strong, and it j ust
got better from there. "Possession"
made good use of t he "mul ti ple POV"
format for some nice mi sdirection.
"Reelin' in the Years" is a great story
about an old crime involving Offi cer
Tom Turcotte's f ather. OOA McNorris is
the show's breakout character, in my
opinion, and Neal McDonough shows
us why in "The David McNorris Show"
and "Blackout," t wo episodes t hat
spot light McNorris. "Insured by Smith &
Wesson" featured Offi cer Ray Hechler in
the middle of a host age situation. What
makes t hi s episode stand out was the
cool stunt cast ing of Joe Penny as a
former 80s TV star who gets caught up
in t he cri me. You may know t hat Penny
co-starred in Riptide, a quint essential
80s TV series, and t his episode of
Boomtown actually used footage from
Riptide t o show Penny's character's f all
from grace.
In "Execution," DDA McNorris is
summoned t o San Quent in by an
inmat e scheduled t o be executed t hat
night. Thi s inmat e has a message f or
McNorris: if McNorris can't st op the
execution, the inmat e's gang wi ll kill a
cop t hey've abducted. So while
McNorri s t ries every trick at his disposal
t o get pri son officials t o st ay the
executi on, the cops use various
methods to t ry t o find t he kidnapped
officer. This episode leads direct ly into
"Storm Watch," where t he entire
precinct is locked down and Det. Joel
Stevens is put in charge of finding the
corrupt cop who helped the gang in the
previous episode. Actors Donnie
Walhberg and Neat McDonough bot h
starred in Bond of Brothers, who was
produced by Boomtown creat or Graham
Yost, and "Storm Watch" feat ured two
more BoB actors, Rick Gomez and Frank
John Hughes.
Boomt own received lot s of cri t ical
accl aim, but struggled in t he ratings.
Frankly, it 's probably the kind of show
t hat would've fared better on cable. But
on network t elevision, Yost and hi s
writers were const antly being asked to
make it more of an easy·t o·foll ow
procedural. So when t he show was
picked up for a second season, there
were some element s t hat had t o be
revamped.
Andrea Littl e, t he reporter, was gone,
and was never mentioned again.
Teresa, t he paramedic, makes a career
change and enroll s in the police
academy. Had the show cont inued, she
would've presumably become a cop.
Vanessa Williams j oi ned t he cast as Det.
Katherine Pierce, who supervises t he
Det ectives. By thi s point, the show had
all but abandoned the "multiple POV"
format. Scenes would still be t old from
a parti cular charact er's POV, but only in
t he broadest sense. And t he st ories
t hemselves were st rict ly linear.
Despite these changes, the second
season (which only last ed six episodes)
was st ill impressive. The second season
premiere, "For Love of Money,"
introduced Williams as Det. Pierce, and
t he second episode, "Inadmissable,"
feat ured a great appearance by St acey
Keach as DDA McNorris's (ather, in
whose shadow McNorri s lived for the
whole first season. "Wannabe" is a
pretty neat st ory about t hieves who
pose as cops.
I had the pleasure of working wit h
Boomtown's Director of Photography,
John Newby, when I was working on
Ringer. And beli eve me, I t alked his ear
off about my love of Boomtown. Sadly, I
don't have any j uicy gossip about the
show. But it sounds like it was a really
(un place t o work, created by people
who reall y loved what they were doing.
In 2007, seri es creator Graham Yost
launched another cop show on NBC
call ed Raines, starring Jeff Goldblum. In
t he pilot, Mykelt i Willi amson had a
cameo as hi s Boomtown charact er,
"Fearless" Bobby Smith. Yost also gave
Williamson and Neal McDonough
prominent recurring roles (playing new
characters, not their Boomtown roles) in
t he third season of Justified.
The fi rst season o( Boomtown is
avai lable on a nice DVD set (wit h
commentaries and feat urettes), but t he
six·episode second season has never
been released in English (there is a
French DVD release of t he compl ete
seri es). I highly recommend it.
