Dear Parent/Carer

POST 16 OPPORTUNITIES /CAREERS INFORMATION EVENING

Thursday 9th October 2014 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Later this academic year your child will be involved in making decisions relating to their GCSE choices
or their pathway after leaving Darton. As you are probably aware, the main options will involve further
academic study, vocational courses of study and training courses related to employment. You are
invited, along with your son or daughter, to the careers evening on 9
th
October at 6.30pm in the College
Atrium.

Following a short presentation there will be the opportunity to visit many various stands and hopefully
discuss possible career paths and relevant choices at GCSE and beyond with representatives and
staff.

Specialist Careers Advisors will be available on the evening. Most subject departments will be present
from Barnsley College, as will many of the organisations that provide training in the Barnsley Area.
Penistone Grammar School 6th Form and Shelley College 6th Form will be represented along with the
Armed Services. Additionally we will have stands representing other career areas. Of course, many
career pathways can be discussed with Training Representatives and Careers Advisors.

I would recommend that you take time to have some discussions beforehand with your son or daughter
regarding their career thoughts including possible GCSE courses for Year 9 students and what
information you might seek on the evening.

Although Barnsley College and the School 6th Forms have open evenings at various dates throughout
the year they do not take the place of this event. There will be a specific options evening for Year 9
later in the academic year. We are extremely fortunate at Darton to have the support of our partner
organisations.

I do hope that you will take advantage of this evening and I look forward to seeing you on the 9
th

October 2014 to enable us to offer our students an evening specifically for them.
