PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY 2 LABORATORY (Pharmacy and Chemistry of Organic Medicinal)

II. Preparation of Crude Extracts When the plant was collected the plant was bearing fruits. The time of collection was at August, it was the start of the rainy season then and it was day time. The tree was quite tall, indicating old age. The leaves as we picked were fully expanded and bright colored. The plant then was authenticated at the UST grad school and research complex (TARC) by Asst. Professor Ophelia S. Laurente . The leaves were then air dried at room temperature (Around 24-26 degrees Celsius) and it was left for many weeks. The plant metabolites were then extracted from the grinded (powdered) leaf sample using the percolation method. The solvents that can be used are methanol, ethanol and water to name a few but out of those three the solvent used was methanol, mainly because this solvent is for dry leaves. The extracts were then stored in an amber bottle, the used of a colored glass is recommended for the light not to break down the other properties of the plants.
