Villa Empain: Art Deco Masterpiece in Brussels

Art Deco Masterpiece Reopens as a Center for Cultural Relations between East and West

The Boghossian Foundation reopened the Villa Empain in Brussels on April 21, 2010 after extensive renovations to make it a cultural and artistic center. The new center has become an artistic center creating a dialogue between the East and West. The

villa is one of the best examples of the art deco architectural style in Brussels. It is located at Avenue Franklin Roosevelt 67, B-1000 Brussels, Belgium. Just a year after its reopening, the Villa Empain was named one of the 2011 Europa Nostra awardrecipients of European Cultural Heritage. From the Boghossian Foundation's thorough preparation, technical craftsmanship and materials used, the Europa Nostra jury was impressed with the transformation of this historical masterpiece of art deco architecture. Early in his life, Baron Edouard-Jean Empain amassed a personal fortune through the construction of railways in Belgium and France and then through the creation of the Banque Empain, which later on became the Belgian Industrial Bank. However, he is best known to the general public for his kidnapping in 1978 as he was leaving his house in Paris, France. Empain, who had a finger cut off as a result of the ordeal, was freed after two months, when one of captors was arrested. A French-language movie about this period in Baron Empain's life called "Rapt" was released November 2009 starring French actor Yvan Attal. The film is expected to be come out in the US soon. Future programming initiatives at the Villa Empain will promote dialogue between the East and West with humanitarian and educational activities, conferences and other cultural and scientific events. The villa, built in 1930 by the Swiss architect Michel Polak, will also offer a shop and restaurant with a terrace that can accommodate groups or individual diners in the old caretaker's lodge.
