PROPOSAL TO AMEND LINES
NEAR THE GOAL IN A
FOOTBALL FIELD
Juan Andrés Gualda Gil
Line delimiting the penalty area

In the penalty area there is no proportionality between danger and punishment.
Indeed, fouls produced at point A or point B result in a penalty shot, but the danger of
both fouls is very different, see Fig 1.
The penalty spot is P and the center of the goal is C.
The distance from B to the center of the goal is 16.5 m.
The distance from A to the center of the goal is 26 m.
It is not logical that the punishment for both fouls be the same.
It is necessary, therefore, to make the distances equal. The lines of the penalty area
with its penalty arc must be replaced by a semicircle with center C and radius 20.16 m,
see Fig 2.
Penalty shot
With the penalty shot something similar happens, it is the same punishment for
different danger fouls.
For example, fouls produced at points D and E, Fig 3, are punished in the same way
(penalty shot from the point P) being so that their dangerousness is very different.
The distance from point E to C is 5.5 m and the goal is seen under an angle of 67°.
The distance from point D to C is 20 m and the angle under which the goal is seen is
0º.
It is not logical that the punishment be the same. Currently many football matches
are won unfairly for this reason. Consider that a penalty is almost a goal (statistics tell
us that 80% of the penalties become a goal).
It is therefore necessary to establish two types of penalty depending of the danger of
the foul. In Fig 4 are drawn the penalty area, the goal area (which is the same as the
current) and a new area that we will call intermediate area, which, as shown in the
figure, consists of a front line that passes through P and two lateral lines that are a
prolongation of the lateral lines of the goal area. The points Q and R are the corners of
the intermediate area.
If a foul occurs in the goal area or the intermediate area, the penalty will be shot
from P.
If a foul occurs outside these two areas (but within the penalty area), the penalty will
be shot from the point Q or R, depending on the side where the foul occurred. Thus,
there are two types of penalty: the greater penalty, which is the same as the current one
(launched from the point P) and the minor penalty (launched from Q or from R).
Greater penalty: the distance from P to C is 11 m and the angle under which the goal
is seen is 37º.
Minor penalty: the distance of Q to C is 14.3 m and the angle under which the goal is
seen is 22º.
In Fig 5, the football field is given in all its dimensions with the new lines and the
last figure is given in perspective.
