Recently, over 30 news media stories have been posted on the internet about research conducted regarding the interactions of hatchery and wild salmon. Several of these are publications from ADF&G staff. Covel reported that ADF&G will put into place new tools to prevent this from happening again in the future. It is important for Department to clear this up. PWSAC is monitoring this along with Tracy Foster, Foster Communication Strategies. General Manager’s Report (Dave Reggiani) CCH Assistant Hatchery Manager, Lance Uselman has been promoted to the CCH Hatchery Manager recently vacated by Neil Wright. Craig Parry, AFK Hatchery Manager, has submitted his resignation, effective early June. We have several applicants interested in the position. Cordova on Friday, May 25 to get pictures of the PWSAC staff as well as any of the board members who are in town. Rearing – AFK, CCH, and WNH have released a portion or all of their pink salmon into the zooplankton bloom (see attached). Notably, the zooplankton abundance in Wells Passage was remarkable this year with one sample literally off the chart. The WNH chum salmon will be released later this week. The PC chum salmon were released yesterday. The GH Summit and Paxson Lakes sockeye salmon stocking have been completed. The Crosswinds Lake stocking is currently on hold waiting for the surface ice to break up. The Cordova Fleming Spit WNH coho salmon stocking occurred yesterday. The Whittier and Chenega stocking will be completed by the end of the week. The on‐site release will occur around June 1. Wilson Construction has mobilized to WNH and AFK. The WNH construction on the approach wall just about complete. A dozer and excavator have been working through five feet of snow to get to the dam at AFK. Advanced Blasting Services out of Wasilla will mobilize next week to begin drilling holes for the anchor bolts and suspension bridge. Alaskan Challenger (AC) Update – the landing craft transported the coho salmon for the Fleming Spit stocking. Alaska Marine Lines helped us with their jockey truck to deliver the transfer trailer to and from the pond. The AC is on the way to Whittier today to drop off the net pen pieces. They will return on Friday to Whittier with the coho salmon to place in the net pen. Over the past six weeks, the AC has transported over 500,000lbs of fish food from Cordova to the hatchery sites.
