I insist on a lot of time being spent, almost every day, to just sit and think. T
hat is very uncommon in American business. I read and think. So I do more readin
g and thinking, and make less impulse decisions than most people in business." Warren Buffet.
Today many leaders talk far too much and listen too little, when it should be th
e other way around.
Silence is especially important:
Negotiations are going nowhere. Silence can be an effective tool to stop the con
versation and get everyone to reflect on what is happening.
When you or some else is angry- Silence allows for emotions to settle.
When you want to learn more. The best way to learn information is to stop talkin
g and listen.
The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly
timed pause." -Mark Twain
The best thinking has been done in solitude." -- Thomas Edison
3 ways busy leaders carve out solitude:
1. Get up earlier. Starting your day earlier allows you stillness than will othe
rwise elude you for the rest of the day. Christie s CEO Steven Murphy, gets up qui
te early to think. Thinking and planning in the morning as he says makes him str
ategic and proactive, rather than reactive.
2. Calender - Jeff Weiner CEO of LinkedIn, schedules 30- to 90-minute blocks of
"nothing" into his schedule. He developed this system in response to a schedule
that was becoming "so jammed with back-to-back meetings that I had little time l
eft to process what was going on around me or just think."
3. Take a break. Put your phone on silent even if it s just for five minutes and a
llow yourself to breathe. Every day after lunch, I lie down on the sofa in my off
ice, I hold my car keys in my right hand and let my hand hang toward the floor.
When the car keys fall out of my hand, I know I m done. -Sam Moore former CEO of Th
omas Nelson Publishers.
1) Spend More time away from the office. Spend More time with Family.
2) Take Care of Yourself. Eat Healthy, exercise, drink lots of water, reduce str
ess levels and get adequate rest. Furthermore, get rid of toxic emotions. Life i
s too short.
3) Take time to Listen. Effective leaders learn that it is important to put asid
e distractions, to stop multi-tasking, and be truly present with people when speak
ing with them. Listening is a great time and money saver. It can solve a host of
problems, bring creativity, give insights and not to mention show people that y
ou care.
4) Surround yourself with Great people, Leaders in your field and be Fearless in

pursuit of game-changing ideas.
5) Spend some time developing priceless attributes as integrity, honesty, empath
y, kindness
Invest and form meaningful relationships. Have a good supportive network of peop
le you can really trust, who believe in you, are honest with you and will encour
age you. Networking is key.
If you want to be a lion, you must train with lions.

There s a weird phenomenon that occurs when you stop talking. Pause for two or thr
ee seconds and the audience assume you lost your place. Pause for five seconds a
nd the audience begins to think the pause is intentional... and starts wondering
why. Pause for ten seconds and even the people who were busy tweeting can t resis
t glancing up.
Pick up the phone. The digital world has created poor communication habits. Emai
l is a productivity killer and usually a distraction from tasks that actually ma
tter. For example, people often copy multiple people on emails to get it off the
ir plate don't be a victim of this action. This distracts everyone else by creat
ing noise against the tasks they re trying to accomplish and is a sign of laziness
. If you receive an email where many people are CC'd, do everyone a favor by BCC
ing them on your reply. If your email chain goes beyond two replies, it s time to
pick up the phone. Increase your productivity by scheduling a call.
