Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines
Secretariat Committee

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am writing to you to express my recommendation of Val Dominic Monit, a graduate of AB – Bachelor of
Secondary Education Major in English in Ateneo de Naga University, to be a part of this year’s Ten
Outstanding Students of the Philippines. I believe that Val embodies the ideals, skills and traits which are
worthy of this recognition. As his teacher and mentor in college, I have seen how he exemplified
excellence not just as a student but as a person as well. Throughout his college life, Val is known as an
academic achiever, student leader, prolific writer, eloquent speaker, and a God – fearing man.
Val started to make a name in the school by joining the Remontados Debate Society. This is where he
showed his eloquence in articulating his opinions on important social issues like politics, religion, and
terrorism. During his stay in this organization, he was able to bag awards in regional debate
competitions as an adjudicator and a debater.
While he trains as a public speaker, he also served in the university’s Supreme Student Government
(SSG) as a volunteer to some of its activities and events. Val was a part of the 21st Annual Leadership
Summit of Buklod Atenista where he served as the Secretariat Committee Head. Later on, in the year
2014, he became the head of SSG’s Events management Team and was a part of the program committee
of the Ateneo de Naga’s 75th Anniversary celebration. Furthermore, he also helped organizing other SSG
events like Alternative Class Program and a benefit concert. In these affiliations, I saw how Val learned
how to become a responsible leader. Organizing these events made him face challenges and conflicts
with co-volunteers which he successfully managed. With this, Val learned the value of effective
communication and building good relationships with his fellow Ateneans. All these contributed to his
formation of becoming a student leader.
Pursuing his passion for service, Val also joined the College Guidance Center’s Facilitators Brigrade.
Facilitators Brigade is a volunteer group which guides the university’s freshmen students in their first
few days as college students. Being a facilitator for three school years, Val has become a “Kuya” of the
younger college batches especially in the College of Education. The freshmen students that he handled
in the Orientation Seminars come to him if they have academic and personal problems and he willingly
shares his experience and gives them advice.
One of Val’s significant contributions to our College of Education is his service as the Editor-in-Chief of
Kadunong, the College’s official student publication. In his leadership, Kadunong was not only known as
a mere student publication. Through his guidance and his expertise in campus journalism, Kadunong
organized seminar workshops on campus journalism which were conducted in Ponong Integrated
School, a far flung school in Magarao, Camarines Sur. With Val’s help and his heart of serving, Kadunong
transcended its borders by being socially responsible with the help of its editorial board and the other
student volunteers.
Despite his extra-curricular affairs, Val was able to balance them with his studies. He was a consistent
honor student in his college years. In fact, he graduated Cum Laude and with an academic distinction in

Education. Because of being an active student both in extra-curricular and academics, Val was hailed as
the Class Valedictorian of 2016. Along with this, he also received a service award from the university.
Although he has been highly recognized for the good deeds he had done for the university and the
community, Val will never forget the values that Ateneo de Naga taught him. Now that he has already
graduated, I know that he will continue to serve, this time, as an English teacher. He will always be
proud of Bikol culture and language and every day, he will live by his mantra, In everything, to love and
to serve.

Sincerely,

Ma. Luz T. Badiola
Chairperson
Secondary Department
College of Education
Ateneo de Naga University
