FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nashville Area Red Cross Receives State-of-the-Art Disaster Communications Response Vehicle During April
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 9, 2010) – The Nashville Area Red Cross has been granted use of a state-of-the-art Emergency Communications Response Vehicle (ECRV) during the month of April by the American Red Cross. The ECRV is a highly sophisticated communications resource whose primary purpose is to be the first to arrive at a disaster area and provide critical emergency communications response without the benefit of any local infrastructure by communicating via satellite directly with the American Red Cross network and other emergency management agencies. In large-scale disasters, communication is one of the major challenges faced by first responders during rescue and relief operations. The ECRV project began in 2000 when Ford Motor Company donated 10 ECRVs to the American Red Cross. Today there are only 12 ECRVs nationwide and less than 200 certified operators; the Nashville Chapter currently has 4 certified volunteers trained to operate the ECRV. Given Nashville’s proximity with much of the southeastern United States, the Nashville Chapter is an ideal hub for local disaster response. “The ECRV represents the best in technology that the Red Cross has to respond to the most devastating recovery operations,” says Jeff Duncan, a certified ECRV operator. “With the ability to bring the resources of the Red Cross online within hours of arrival, the ECRV offers a unique first response capability allowing faster evaluation and response to the needs of the situation and our clients.” Tornadoes and ice storms— disasters common to the southeast—destroy local infrastructure and make communication difficult in emergency situations, which is why Nashville is fortunate to have the ECRV housed in its own backyard. Media is invited: The ECRV will be on display before the Nashville Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) April meeting held at the Nashville Area Chapter:

Tuesday, April 13, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Nashville Area Red Cross 2201 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203
