Perchlorate-tainted water pumped from shallow aquifers around the Las Vegas Wash and the former Kerr-McGee Chemical plant in henderson is being treated with the help of a naturally occurring bacteria in a process that has been patented by the environmental management firm Veolia Water. The process has reduced the amount of perchlorate in Lake Mead from 10 parts per billion in 2001 to 1.2 parts per billion today, an amount so small that it can only be detected thanks to recent advances in sampling technology.
