Adam Rakes – Site Requirements

Requirements for all sites –

 All five existing structures must remain intact – We are only building on to
these existing networks.
 Locations LAN needs to be designed to connect all five locations.
 Doctor and patient information for all locations accessible from each
remote location so we must centralize a database
 Operation hours are 7am-9pm – Offices will remain operational we need to
start thinking about the times we are going to work on these systems – We
should back up every night at close before working on the network – We
need to think about equipment compatibility for upgrading the existing
networks.
 All offices have dated equipment and software that needs updated – We
need to think about rebuilding the Local Area Network in these locations or
at least upgrading what is dated. If we decide to upgrade to save costs we
need to make sure we have a solid list of NEW equipment that is
COMPATABLE with the EXISTING equipment.
 We need to transfer all patient data from the existing Dot matrix printers
with extremely out of date software. – We need to start thinking about
how we are going to get this information into our centralized database OR
computer.
 We need to plan for growth. Four new doctors, a number of nurses, an
office manager, and a number of interns.
 We need to implement wireless access at all locations. Doctors would like
to be able to use wireless laptops and PDA’s for patient visits.
 Each office needs an application server with a Medical Manger Software.
 A server for business management applications – accounting, HR, and other
assets management tools
Adam Rakes – Site Requirements
 A server for Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP
 A Web Server
 An e-mail client (email will be hosted by an external provider)
 A file/print server
 Three Printers/copiers/scanners
Workstations at all locations
 3 workstations for nurses
 3 workstations for doctors
 1 workstation for the office manager – all of these PC’s need to have MS
Office, An e-mail client of our choice, access to all patient information,
billing and insurance claim applications, and the internet.
Each office stats
 92’ wide 66’ deep
 10’ tall
 4’ between roof and false ceiling.
 All passageways are 4’ wide
 Central offices print room is 6’, storage is 20’, and the IT/Telecom Room is
16’ in length

North / South –
 We will need to install a brand new LAN at these locations they do NOT
have any LAN functionality.
 Each site has a computer handling billing and insurance. We will need to
move data from these and step on the 56k modems they are currently
using.
 Patient information is stored on a number of scattered PC’s. We will need
to get this data together from all of these PC’s to transfer to our centralized

Data Location. – or we could pay someone to transfer the information from
the companies hardcopy printouts
 Replace Printers
East/West –
Both locations
 Computers at this location are connected in a Peer-to-Peer mode. We
need to think about how we are going to upgrade this location to
implement a more functional LAN.
 Machines in this location are outdated and need to be replaced

West Location
o Location has an old SCO Unix machine they use for Insurance and
billing software applications. We need to think about getting the data
off of this device that is connected to the East site through a point-
to-point connection. Both sites use this system for their billing and
insurance applications so each will need a new system.
Central Location –
 This location currently has a LAN that needs MAJOR upgrades (Software,
Hardware, Server, Workstations, Networking devices - Like switches routers
and possibly new drops)
 This location will be used for centralized office and server location in our
project description. This site will handle all Data communications. All major
services will be hosted at this location. Patient information, Billing, and
Insurance, etc.
 Novell 4.6 server used for files, printing and backup functions is currently
used we will want to upgrade this. The only two computers currently at this
location are running windows 98. We probably want to ditch these as well
so we don’t have to worry about compatibility issues down the road.
