2.0 My Review of Journal Articles
Introduction

First of all I would like to introduce the articles aim is about the usage of newspapers in classroom. From the articles I found that the authors have state that newspapers provide teachers and students with creative and practical ideas. Based on the three articles, there are similarities in the opinion given by the authors. They agreed to use newspapers as medium for teaching even though they came from different country and different culture. So, from this it is show that using newspapers as an aid in classroom are relevant to be applied by every teacher.
Development

From the articles, I found several key points that are same to one another articles and the articles had mentioned about newspapers could broaden knowledge, improved students reading and writing, developing critical thinking and motivate students. Discussing the first key point is about newspapers could broaden knowledge of students and also teachers. The explanation of the key point is those three authors have discussed further in their articles that newspapers has wide ranging advertisements, entertainment, sports, current issues, cartoon, comics, reviews, special features, etc. this wide range of segments can provides students with much information and knowledge, such as about the foreign culture, foreigner’s values of live, ways of thinking, beliefs, behaviors and life trend. With all the knowledge, students will be more confident to their self to have communication with others. I found that this is interesting because not even students could gain knowledge, teachers could also increase their knowledge by applying this method in the classroom. Teachers can share the information and their experience with the students and this will bring better communication between teachers and students. As a result, students will feel more comfortable with their teachers. For the second key point that I found amused is the newspapers can improve student’s reading and writing. The three authors have given deeper thought regarding this key point. In their research, they found that many activities could be carry out using newspapers to improved student’s writing and reading. By using newspapers, students can be introduced to journalese which means the language of news writing in a systematic way. Through the activity, teachers

can observe which students have talent in this journalism. So that, teachers can encourage the students to be more serious in this field and whichever one day the student could make it as a career. Furthermore, students also could learn new vocabulary through the newspapers, which this will help them in producing good writing and better communication. Developing critical thinking in students is considered as the third key point is about. The critical thinking can be obtain when teachers discussing the materials with the students. Students will think critically about what they have read, form new concepts, and understandings from their reading. Through the activity, I think that student will have much understanding regarding the topic and this will enlighten them to study more. As a teacher, we need to carefully choose the materials, which can attract students and the most important is the material should be suit with the student’s level. The last key point, I want to discuss is using newspapers can motivate students. This key point means by using newspapers, students will increase their knowledge, which means that they understand what were they are reading. From that students will feel a sense of pride and achievement and this can be motivation to them to keep reading the newspapers. Moreover, students can be motivated when they read about the real life. The newspapers will help them in understand about social studies which this will lead to the understanding environmental problems, developing individual abilities and interest, and most important help students live successfully in changing world. From the details discussion about the key points, I would like to state that I agree with all the key points provided by the authors. This is because, using newspapers in classroom bring more advantages compared to other mass media. The articles also has influenced in my role as a teacher, regarding on the values, belief and assumptions. As a teacher, we should believe that student can improve if the method used is correct. This is because each student has their own abilities in consuming the input that we give. Furthermore, I think that every teacher need to encourage and helps students to improve in their life and become better person in society. The articles also taught me about every student have right and chances to learn and teachers need to help them to achieving their dreams.

Some newspapers are easy to read, easy to use. The teachers can design exercises to develop reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, social study skills and more. Moreover, teachers should be careful with the way to organize a certain activity using newspapers. In planning a lesson using newspapers, teachers should take into consideration the length of the articles, paragraphs, the complexity of the language, content, time available and the level of the students. In simple word, teachers should well plan when using newspapers as an aid in classroom. From the information and knowledge obtain, I got much understanding regarding on how to use the information. The important thing that need to be considered is what is student’s interest and how they can be motivated. These two questions have taught me how I can planning the lesson and be close to students. Strategy that I could apply is organizing the material according to their level and creates different activity each week. So that, the students will not bored with same activity and they will be encourage and motivated during class. As to obtain information about student’s interest, I will be close to students and be friend with them. Through this I am not only can get information from students but also I can understand them better. They also can feel comfortable to discuss anything with me.
Conclusion

We should not avoid using newspapers in the classroom only thinking that they are difficult for our students. There are several ways of making newspapers material useable for the various levels of students, by selecting interesting newspapers and the students will be interested in reading them and would skip some difficult expressions. The teaching process will be much easier when teachers are fully prepared with the materials they wanted to use. Moreover, teachers need to be up to date and alert with the changing world. Usually we used traditional printed newspapers, why don’t we do some changes by using technologies nowadays. This will attract students because they were familiar with the technologies. Regarding of all the information, there still much room in expanding the knowledge and information, so here is the question that I need to answer to expand the knowledge, how the technologies can be exploited to combine with the usage of newspapers in classroom. As conclusion, all three articles have brought new insight for me to teach English using newspapers and other mass media.
