emolition of the former senior center in St. James Park began. In keeping with the community approved St. James Park Master Plan of 2002, the former building site will transform into a grassy area, small plaza and four tables. Construction should be complete by February. The seniors using the center transitioned into nearby Roosevelt Community Center at 901 E. Santa Clara St. The contractor installed a security fence around the area. The playground will remain open during construction. Although there will be truck traffic during demolition, there are no plans for Just three light rail stops from our neighstreet closures. For any questions and borhood’s Gish station, St. James Park has concerns please contact Evelyn Velez-Rosario, plans to become accessible from all sides. City of San Jose, PRNS at (408) 793-5552. ANNUAL NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING: MARCH 2, 2011
Please join your RGNA Board Members at the Annual Neighborhood Meeting on March 2, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Bachrodt School Media Center with District 3 Councilmember Sam Liccardo and other guest speakers.

s we begin 2011 in our quaint, 64 year-old neighborhood, I’d like to take the time to reflect on the 2010 events. In February 2010, we had our Annual Neighborhood Meeting at Bachrodt Academy. At the meeting we heard from our District 3 Councilman Sam Liccardo, current developments and voted on new directors to the RGNA Board. That Board, consists of Lara Sprinkles, Ransom Fields, Charlie Chew, Jay Prunty, Liz Moscato, and myself, Stephanie Lykam. We planned and managed a variety of activities. In April we had our bi-annual yard sale, August our Night Out/Ice Cream Social with over 300 people enjoying ice cream and fellowship. September we had our neighborhood clean up, which gave us an opportunity to donate unused items to the Salvation Army or toss the items into dumpsters. The following week we had our 2nd yard sale. In October, Lara spearheaded our fabulous picnic with the help from Patti Bossert and Lilian Dennis. Along with the delicious barbecue, the team organized the raffle, which consisted of mailing out over 150 requests, a silent auction, Minute-ToWin-It games, pumpkin painting, hat decorating, cake walk, scarecrow contest, bounce house, kid games, and of course BINGO! A huge thank you to all of you who volunteered to make it a very successful event. November was our annual Warmth Drive - a time of giving back to our community and a star gazing party at Bachrodt Academy’s playground. We ended the year with caroling throughout the neighborhood. The Board has worked countless hours, planning and volunteering to make the events possible. To continue with these

Warmth Drive
Thank you Rosemary Gardens! A total of ten large donation bags were collected on November 13, 2010 and have been delivered to InnVision the Way Home. InnVision Mission Statement: InnVision the Way Home empowers homeless and atrisk families & individuals to gain stability by providing housing, food, and programs that promote self-sufficiency. In the South Bay this includes emergency shelters, transitional/supportive housing, and permanent multi-housing units & apartments. This comprehensive network of services meets both the emergency and longer-term need of the homeless and

By all accounts the RGNA and Bachrodt PTA sponsored star party in November was a rousing success in spite of the partly overcast night sky. Dozens of Bachrodt Elementary School students, their parents, and other residents of Rosemary Gardens lined up to look through two telescopes provided by members of the San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA). In an effort to keep the star gazers warm, awake, and energized, cookies and hot chocolate were provided by members of the PTA and current and former RGNA board members. Although there not many celestial objects to see because of the clouds, the eager star gazers did get to look at the

giant planet Jupiter and its four major "Galilean" moons as well as the beautiful blue and yellow double star system of Alberio in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. The two very knowledgeable amateur astronomers from the SJAA cheerfully fielded dozens of questions from the children and parents. The star party offically concluded about 9:00 p.m. but a few future astronomers continued to bombard the SJAA members with questions well after the majority of the crowd had gone home. All in all, a great time was had by all and the SJAA Board and Bachrodt PTA plan to sponsor another star party in the not too distant future when the weather is better.

low-income men, women, families, veterans, and the mentally ill.

Cocoa and Caroling
A jolly group of carolers offered songs of holiday cheer as they strolled through the streets of Rosemary Gardens on December 12, 2010. The group gathered around 6:30 p.m. to practice their song selections and to warm their spirits with hot cocoa. They were accompanied by Amado Hipol on guitar. Thank you Melissa Ruiz, Stephanie Lykham, Marina and Landon Chandler, Virginia Scheinhaus, Judy McQuay, Mariko Schmidtauer and Cathy Baca for sharing your voices and spreading good tidings to the neighbors of Rosemary Gardens.

RGNA Sparkled!
Thank you for brightening our community! Over 178 homes shared their holiday decorations and lights throughout the month of December. This was a warm addition to Rosemary Gardens. Certificates were delivered by two elves on Christmas Eve! Please continue to help our community shine!

activities, we need you. We need your help financially and we need your help with planning and working. Every two months, a newsletter goes out to the 450 homes in our neighborhood, edited by a neighbor volunteer, Paul Baca. Your membership fees help to offset the costs, but it is not enough to pay for the Annual Meeting, yard sale advertising, newsletters, Ice Cream Social and Annual Picnic. Every month we have a Recycle Drive. You can help raise money by participating in our monthly Recycle Drive. You place your recyclables (newspapers, cans, and plastic bottles) out the 2nd Saturday of the month and you can drive and pick up the recyclables using your car or truck (8:00-9:30am). All the money raised is used to fund activities we all enjoy and make our neighborhood a fun and special place to live. In 2010 we

raised almost $600 by recycling. Inside this newsletter is your annual membership form. Please take the time to fill it out, checking off where you can help. Remember the small fee you pay helps to cover the costs of newsletters and special events. An involved community is a safe and caring community! Please get involved!

On behalf of Bachrodt Charter Academy students, families and staff, Happy New Year! School is back in full swing and the students are excited about another great semester. Already, students are looking forward to a family movie night in early February and Valentine's flower grams sales to celebrate Valentine's Day. Also, we are gearing up for our big See's Candy fundraiser ... so be on the lookout for Bachrodt students in the neighborhood selling delicious See's candies! Just before Thanksgiving, Bachrodt students participated in their annual Turkey Trot walk-a-thon. The students really enjoy this event and had a great time walking around the field. They also raised close to $10,000 to support school initiatives.

Thanks to any Rosemary Gardens neighbors who supported this even by making a donation! During the holidays, students at Bachrodt held a canned food drive to support Second Harvest Food Bank. By the end of the food drive, the students had filled 5 barrels with non-perishable food. It was wonderful to see the students get excited about doing something for a great cause. The class in each grade level that donated the most cans of food went ice skating at the downtown ice skating rink right when they got back to school. What a great way to start the new year! Thanks again to the Rosemary Gardens Neighborhood Association for their continued support of the neighborhood school. We look forward to collaborating on more great events this spring!

Happy New Year!

Adopt-A-Rose for your Valentine
FROM THE GUADALUPE RIVER PARK CONSERVANCY

Give a Valentine’s gift that can speak volumes without a word ever being said. Traditionally roses are the expected gift, but what about a rose that will bloom the entire year and whose color represents something unique about your special someone? If this gift sounds perfect for your Valentine, look no further than San Jose Heritage Rose Garden! With your donation of $50, the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy can help you select the perfect rose. Perhaps you will choose pink for grace, white for innocence, or red for that deep and undying love and respect you are feeling. We can also search our database of roses to see if your Valentine’s name matches one of our 3,600 historic roses.

Your rose will be marked in the garden with an engraved plaque with your own personal inscription for one full year. To present your gift you will receive a beautiful Valentine’s box that includes a small box of decadent chocolates from Schurra’s Candy Factory, a large gourmet cookie from Café Too! at the San Jose Museum of Art, and two tickets for the Children’s Carousel at Arena Green. You will also receive a special gift card announcing your rose adoption. Gift packages will be available for pick-up, prior to Valentine's Day, at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center located at 438 Coleman Avenue. For more information, visit www.grpg.org/AdoptARose .shtml or call 298-7657.
