S
aving lives and uniting families may seem like a once-in-
a-lifetime experience for most people, but for Dr. Luanna
Beauchamp, M.D. Perinatologist at Eastern Idaho Regional
Medical Center in Idaho Falls, it is a common occurrence.
Tough she also has her own practice, Beauchamp also rep-
resents a new service provided by the hospital to provide care for
women and unborn children involved in high-risk pregnancies.
Te closest hospital that provided these services was in Salt
Lake City, Utah until Beauchamp joined the team at EIRMC in
October of last year.
As the only perinatologist, or doctor trained in Maternal Fe-
tal Medicine (MFM), in all of Eastern Idaho, Beauchamp helps
patients from several of the surrounding cities, including some
from Montana.
Beauchamp is a consultant and her patients are ofen referred
to her by their obstetricians. With her specialty, Dr. Beauchamp
is able to treat several diferent categories of patients.
Beauchamp sees patients who have a family history of high-
risk pregnancies; those who have medical problems like diabe-
tes, high blood pressure or heart disease; those who have com-
plications of the pregnancy like preterm labor or if their water
has broken prematurely, issues or defects of the fetus and high-
risk pregnancies due to multiple births like twins or triplets.
EIRMC recently became certifed to do several diferent types of
screening for pregnant patients to determine if there are risks. Part
of the screening process involves an ultrasound evaluation of the
fetus to check for Down Syndrome and other abnormalities.
Beauchamp said the ability to do detailed screening is a re-
ally big deal for Eastern Idaho and surrounding areas. She also
said there doesn’t have to be a family history of abnormalities for
women to get the screening.

to be at risk, like those 35 or older, or those with a history of
problems to come in and get a screening. But really, any preg-
nant woman is at risk. In fact, Down Syndrome babies are born
more ofen to ladies in their 20s than in their 30s. So anyone is
at risk,” said Beau-
champ.
Beauchamp said

all the pregnancies
in Eastern Idaho
can be considered
high-risk. She said
part of the reason
for that is there are
a lot of people in
the area who have
diabetes or high
blood pressure.
Te ultrasounds
and machinery that
Beauchamp uses
for lab work and
testing are much
more sophisticated
and complicated
than traditional
hospital machinery.
“We have state
of the art machines
that can not only do
your traditional ul-
trasound, but also
3D and 4D ultra-
sounds so we can
look for babies with
birth defects,” said
Beauchamp.
For defects like
spina bifda, it is es-
sential to use more
detailed and com-
plex machinery.

each vertebra along
the spine to check
them for defects.
Beauchamp said
that one of her primary goals is to fnd ways to keep the baby
in the womb for as long as possible without causing any harm.
“Roughly every day the baby stays inside, in utero, saves the
baby about three days in the intensive care nursery,” said Beau-
champ. “If I can get them to hold on for two days longer in ute-
ro, that is almost a week in the NICU. It adds up quite quickly.”
Coleen Niemann, Director of Marketing & Community Re-
lations at EIRMC, said having Dr. Beauchamp at the hospital
completes the spectrum of care from pregnancy, to infancy, to
childhood, and then on to adulthood.

“Dr. Beauchamp helps with complicated pregnancies and some
of those babies end up in our NICU, where we have highly special-
ized care through neonatology. We also have a pediatric intensive
care unit. Tat way, if there are conditions that children face long-
term they may have specialized pediatric care services. For the frst
time, we have the full spectrum from preconception all the way up
to 18 years of age. It’s all available right here. We can take care of any

Dana Ridlon, the Nursing Supervisor of the Obstetrix Med-
ical Group of Idaho Falls, works closely with Dr. Beauchamp
and said that her patients ofen become her friends once she has
helped them through their high-risk pregnancies.
Patient Amanda Bockheim, fnally took her twin girls home
on Sept. 9, afer several months in the hospital during her preg-
nancy, and dozens of hospital visits during the girls’ 3 months in
the NICU.
Dr. Beauchamp saw Bockheim and her girls through the
pregnancy process and aided in the complications that arose.
Beauchamp said she was thrilled to see the twins fnally going
home afer such a long journey.
“Tat’s what this care is all about,” said Beauchamp. “We try
to support both the physical and emotional needs of our patients
here. We buy good Kleenexes.”
Beauchamp said she wants to give all the women in Idaho
Falls and in the region the best prenatal care available so their
pregnancies can be successful. n
