African American Mental and Behavioral Health Scholars & Scholarly Works
As a component of the California Reducing Disparities Project (CRDP) African American Population Report, we have created a valuable resource that can be used to identify research based projects, published articles, books, and other scholarly works by ethnic mental and behavioral health professionals of African ancestry. It can also be utilized to identify mentors in the mental health field. The African American Mental Health Scholars and Scholarly Works is a compilation of over 400 African American scholars. The CRDP is a specific statewide initiative of the California Department of Mental Health. As such, the compendium features professionals that live in the State. Other scholars are listed with contact information in a separate section of the report. There are more African American mental and behavioral health scholars, and scholarly works that are not listed. We exercised due diligence to obtain relevant information using multiple methods, across disciplines. Many people simply did not respond to our inquiry. By definition, a scholar is “a learned person,” one who has acquired great knowledge on a subject matter. No document was discovered that compiled the scholarly works of Blacks in the field of mental and behavioral health. Therefore, we used a broad approach to invite all “knowledgeable” in the field to share their work. We have compiled a “beginning” list of Black scholars, irrespective of years of experience, or depth of study, or academic achievement. Our aim is to disseminate information about existing culturally grounded and congruent work by Black scholars. The intent is to provide assistance in the development of community practices for our population, to provide scientific merit and structure for implementation and evaluation, and to facilitate the development of tailored meaningful programs and interventions. Existing research must be used by communities, county program managers, practitioners, policy-makers, and students. Scholarly works by Blacks empower, restore, and revitalize communities of people of African descent. Existing research will help bring healing to Black people. Each scholar is listed alphabetically according to state. We request that you contact the scholar for inquiries related to their scholarly works.
