School Year Calendar - 2006/2007
The first day of the 2006/2007 school year is Tuesday, September 5, 2006, and the final day is Friday, June 15, 2007. School will be in session on weekdays, except certain holidays and seasonal breaks, including Veterans' Day Observation (Nov 10), Thanksgiving (Nov 23 and 24), Winter Break (Dec 25 through Jan 5), Martin Luther King Day (Jan 15), Presidents’ Day (Feb 19), Spring Break (Apr 9 through Apr 13), and Memorial Day (May 28). Two-day programs will include 75 days during the school year, three-day programs 108 days, and fiveday programs 183 days including parent-teacher conference days. After the school year, there will be a summer program.
Academic Programs
Stratford offers academic programs for young children in preschool and pre-kindergarten and for elementary students in kindergarden through eighth grade. The grade levels to be offered at each campus for the 2006 summer program and the 2006/2007 school year are as follows: * Danville Campus: Preschool and Pre-kindergarten * Fremont Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Sixth Grade * Los Gatos Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Fifth Grade * Middle School Campus: Sixth through Eighth Grade * Palo Alto Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Fifth Grade * San Jose Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Fifth Grade * Sunnyvale DeAnza Park Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Fifth Grade * Sunnyvale Washington Park Campus: Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First through Fifth Grade For preschool and pre-kindergarten, Stratford offers both half-day and full day programs. Parents may choose among morning and afternoon programs that are two, three, or five days per week and a full day program that is five days per week. Two-day programs are on Tuesdays and Thursdays; three-day programs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; and five-day programs from Monday through Friday. Kindergarten programs are half-day or full day for five days per week, and first through seventh grades are for the full school day and five days per week. Extended care is available both before and after school. Curriculum Overview
For preschool and pre-kindergarten, Stratford's focus is on helping three- and four-year-olds develop a strong foundation for learning. Class sizes are small to enable teachers the opportunity to spend more time with individual students. The program is more academic than most, with a special emphasis on phonics, mathematics, music, and art. During our SMART Circle (Stratford Math and Reading Time), teachers make learning both fun and stimulating by using puppets and other visual aids to help students learn the alphabet and how to count.
Stratford also has a comprehensive music and art program. The curriculum features a composer and fine artist of the month. In music, Stratford students sing, dance, and play rhythm instruments to the accompaniment of a pianist. In art class, students learn proper technique through daily projects and are also encouraged to develop their imagination and creative skills through free art. At the elementary level, the Stratford curriculum is based in large part on an accelerated version of the Core Knowledge Sequence from the Core Knowledge Foundation. The Sequence provides an outline of specific content to be taught by grade level in language arts, mathematics, history, geography, science, and the fine arts. For language arts, Stratford students read a rich selection of classic novels, short stories, and poetry. Great attention is paid to developing proper technique and usage in terms of writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. For mathematics, Stratford utilizes Saxon Math, a comprehensive program that enables students to develop fundamental skills through incremental development and continual review. Stratford's science program takes advantage of many hands-on experiments in life sciences and physical sciences. As with the preschool and pre-kindergarten programs, Stratford elementary grades also feature a comprehensive music and art program. For foreign language, Stratford teaches Spanish beginning in first grade. Elementary students go on fall and spring field trips that complement daily classroom learning. Enrollment Contract
Upon receipt and acceptance of an application, Stratford will mail to you an enrollment contract that must be resubmitted to Stratford along with prepaid tuition of $250.00 within ten days of receipt in order to guarantee enrollment. The enrollment contract outlines the Stratford policies related to the following: tuition and fees; student withdrawal and/or termination; student illnesses and emergencies; licensing agency rights; parental visitation; and extended care. You should expect to receive the contract by late February 2005 or within three weeks after submission of an application if you are applying after February. Please feel free to contact us if you do not hear from us within this period. In addition to a signed enrollment contract, preschool and pre-kindergarten students must have the following records on file with Stratford prior to the first day of school: 1) Personal Rights; 2) Parents’ Rights; 3) Student Health History; 4) Family Emergency Information; 5) Student Immunization Record; 6) Student Physician Form; and 7) Consent for Medical Treatment. Stratford will provide the necessary forms along with the enrollment contract.
Grade Level Readiness
For the preschool program, children should be at least two years and nine months old by the beginning of the school year as well as potty-trained. The age requirement for pre-kindergarten is three years and nine months and for kindergarten four years and nine months. Exceptions to these age requirements are typically not granted. For kindergarten and elementary grades, Stratford will interview and assess students prior to granting admission in order to confirm grade level readiness. Stratford will contact parents of elementary school applicants to schedule the interview and assessment test.
