Fortunately for all of us, exams have finished and I hope that you did your best and got marks that you are happy with. As we say goodbye for our DP2 students, the ScrIBble team decided to make them a present and we put together a little album called “Back to Pre” and included their pictures in this edition. We all hope that they will always remember with fondness the time that they spent at Rudbeck International Baccalaureate. As ScrIBble grows, it begins to have more and more pages. In this edition we included more articles about food, films and fun. There is also our topic of the month: interviews with Rudbeck’s IB students who are through with their final exams. Have you ever wondered why our DP2s students chose IB and what they think about it now their journey through IB is coming to an end? Read on!

The Math Corner

Probably the most common question that students ask themselves during math class is ”When am I ever going to need to know this in real life?” Perhaps you don’t need advanced calculus to calculate how much you need to pay for your groceries, but simple math will always come in handy in everyday life. A lot of people lack a mathematical interest and bang their heads against the wall when asked to find x. However, math is a great tool to use in everyday life. Math really is all around us: paying your bills, finding the best electricity company, going grocery shopping and finding the most affordable product are just a few examples of when simple math is needed in everyday life. As Jack Black brilliantly says in School of Rock, “Math is a wonderful thing. Math is a really cool thing.” Even if you find math incredibly useless and boring, both inside and outside of school, you can always use you mathematical knowledge to solve math puzzles! Riddle: Three friends went to buy a clock and they contributed $20 each for the $60 clock. Later, the shopkeeper discovered that it was only $50 and sent a servant to return the $10. The servant was unable to divide 10 among the 3, so he kept $4 for himself and gave them each $2. Now each friend’s expenditure is $18 only (18*3=54 ). The friends spent $54 and $4 are with the servant.Total = 54+4 = 58. Where did the $2 go? See the solution on the page 13

Over the three years since PreDP a lot of people have changed progammes and new people have joined the class. Rudbeck IB staff and students wish them well the Rudbeck International Baccalaureate graduates of 2011 all the best in their future endeavours.

Appearances change, but after three years in IB so has the way these students think about the world. Their schooling may be over, but their education still continues. All the best to the IB class of 2011!

DP2s - First and Last(ing) Impressions
I chose IB because Mrs Ahlmén and Mrs Ahlmström came to my school one day and spoke about the programme. I was interested and my parents encouraged me to apply.

Why did the DP2s choose IB? What memories are they taking with them when they leave IB? How did the programme changed them as individuals? Would they would recomend it to other students? Read on to find out!

What I remember the most about the IB is one of the first days of PreDP when we went to Edsbergs Manor just to bond. I realised how different the IB would be compared to the national programme and I decided that it was worth the struggle.

12

IB has allowed me to pursue my interests, allowed me to believe in myself and allowed me to stand up for myself. It has changed me into a more compassionate, caring and, honestly, clever human being. The IB has been such a struggle and I have been pulling my hair and screaming, but I do not regret a single moment of it. I would not only recommend the IB, but I would make as many people as possible apply just because the it is worth it. I chose IB because I wanted to continue to study in English and the IB seemed, at the time, like the best option! What I remember about IB are stress, fear and panic. IB has allowed me to become more aware of everything, especially global issues and politics. Also, I have become more open-minded and less intimidated about giving presentations before an audience.
Naida Sekic Rudbeck IB, 2011 Grad

Åse Rading Rudbeck IB, 2011 Grad

I would recomend IB to those who understand it and who accept it for what it is.

I chose the IB because I have always liked English a lot and I wanted to study abroad after high school. I also wanted a rather broad education, which IB has given me. An experience that is not study related that I remember was when we went to Siarö with the year ahead of our class. Other than that, I definitely remember the process of the EE: difficult as hell, but very satisfying in the end! I think I have another way of looking at things now. I try to see more than what is on the surface, which I’ve always had a problem with. I think it is easier to see things from other perspectives now. I would recommend IB to those who are dedicated and hard working. If you are a slacker, IB will be almost unbearable, but if you want a thorough education and want to develop as a person then apply for IB.

Dare!

What could be more exciting than doing something different? How about cliff diving, surfing or travelling? We all dream of doing these things, but we rarely do them. We can, however, use this upcoming summer holidays as an opportunity to do some out-of-the-ordinary things. With just a few days left until the end of the school year, most IB students are happy since there will be no homework, no deadlines and no exams. This summer holiday is the time lie back, relax and have fun. Yet, what better opportunity to do something unusual when you are free and have the time? What about taking some dancing lessons? How about learning to play a musical instrument? Think about the excitement and adrenaline rush that comes with the feeling of accomplishing something that you did not know you could do. Travelling, camping, skydiving and surfing are just a few of the adventures available for the daring person. If you have no plans for the summer holidays, consider the time as an opportunity to do some CAS. Doing CAS during the summer not only gives you the chance to try out new and wonderful adventures, but you can master a new skill or discover a new hobby. Let’s all get a head start and plan for the exciting adventures we are going to begin!
Our minds only focus on the information given, rather than what really needs to be calculated. When the friends each pay $18 to equal $54, that includes the $4 that the servant keeps. What’s left out of the equation are the $2 that the friends get back from the servant ($6 in total). So the equation would be $54+$6=$60.
