Dream of an Indian does not confine to roti, kapda aur makaan. He needs much more than that. These dreams that home in the eyes of the Indians, have now extended to the cars, to be specific luxury cars. Whether ‘a threepointed star’ or a ‘people’s car’; whether an SUV or a luxury midsize car; all the automobile biggies are investing in India making it an emerging automobile market. The recent ranking of the SUVs in India, shows that the automobile market has treaded a long path from the boxylook Mahindra jeeps to the stylish Land Cruiser Prado.
Days are not far when we will look the LX570s, Hummer H3s and Land Rover SUVs running on the Indian roads.
1. TATA SAFARI DICOR
The Safari was launched in1998 and marked the beginning of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, adding luxury to offroad capability. It was India or rather Tata Engineering's answer to the Pajero, LandCruiser, Discovery and their likes and the first SUV that actually came close to being one. The Maruti Gypsy and the Tata Sierra, by definition, also fall in the SUV segment but this brute has it to international standards. What strikes you about the Safari first is its looks. The Safari breaks the traditional Tata Engineering mould of rectangular, boxy looks and sports a more rounded and contemporary look. Tata Safari with its
slightly puffed yet elegant body and comfortable interiors became the darling of the young middle class urban elite.

Safari comes in eight trims and two drive configurations, frontwheeldrive and allwheel drive.
●
It comes with two engine options: a 2.2L VTT diesel that churns out 138 bhp and 2.0L MPFI petrol that produces 125 bhp.
●
Estimated fuel economy is9/13 km/l(city/highway).
●●
It is furnished with a heightadjustable driver's seat, power windows, a climate control system, and a tilt power steering.
●
All these with a starting price tag of Rs. 6.47 Lakh (exshowroom Delhi).
2. MAHINDRA SCORPIO
Keeping in tradition with decades of supplying general purpose vehicles to the Indian people, Mahindra decided to launch an SUV called Mahindra Scorpio. This SUV became an instant hit and created a wave of enthusiasm among young professionals.

The Scorpio comes with a2.6L turbocharged Inline4 diesel engine that generates 115 bhp. A new addition to the Scorpio lineup is the Scorpio Getaway that comes with an opentop pickup trucklike design.

Another new variant addition in 2008 is that of theVLX, which comes with a 2.2L mHawk aluminium CRDe Inline4 engine that churns out 120 bhp and is easily the cream of the crop.

3. MARUTI SUZUKI GRAND VITARA
After having established itself as an undisputable leader in the small car segment, Maruti Suzuki has set foot in the SUV market with the launch of Grand Vitara. This SUV comes to India with a single petrol engine option, a 5seater configuration, and an enthralling exterior design that resembles the Honda CRV.

The gutsy 2.0L VIS Inline4 petrol engine churns out 119.5 bhp and is linked to either a 5speed manual transmission or a4speed automatic transmission.

An all wheeldrive configuration is standard and the estimated fuel economy is 7/9 km/l (city/highway).

The starting price tag for the Grand Vitara is Rs 13.8 Lakh (exshowroom Delhi).
4. FORD ENDEAVOUR
Struggling to cope with the new Globalised competition, Ford was not to lag behind others while vying for the Indian pie. The Endeavour may look a bit obsolescent, but it has userfriendly interiors with plenty of legroom.

The car comes with a common 2.5L turbocharged diesel VGT Inline4 engine which generates 141 bhp and is propelled by a 5 speed manual transmission.

The only difference between the two available variants is the drive configuration, which is rearwheeldrive (RWD) for one andall wheel drive (AWD) for the other.

Hyundai Tucson is the first premium SUV from the Korean manufacturer HMIL. This compact 5seater offers a chunky SUV presence, a diesel engine, sprightly performance, spacious interiors, and easy handling.

The Japanese car maker Mitsubishi entered the fray of the lucrative Indian SUV market with its Pajero. The Pajero has a military vehicle sturdy front with a boxy rear. It is great offroad and tackles difficult terrain with panache.
