THEME
Urban Play is designed to take back the street, to give us the tools that let us install ourselves, our friends, our families...our games and our desires in what should be the space we all own collectively. - Scott Burnham

We scaled down the area, focusing on site C.
WHY
Play and exploration are vital parts of the creative process, but workers do not necessarily want to take the time to ‘play’ so this exploration needs to be integrated, subtly, into the space itself. Keeping in mind of the architectural intervention proposed in site B, our suggestion is an attachment to this pavilion. While site B is an area where the activity of work is highlighted, the components of our site relieves one from the aforementioned work and exercises play

WHAT
An unstructured setting that allows one to establish themselves in a space, permitting authority to transform, configure or personalize as they desire. A “playground” that provokes exploration, narrates a story and facilitates the beginning of open source urban design. A place where one can play with defined goals and structured rules, or to simply play for pure pleasure and enjoyment. A space that lends ownership.

WHO
Belltown Locals
The idea of providing the Belltown locals a backyard where they could play was an interesting concept we chose to explore.
Young Creatives
Young creatives are those who are interested in generating new ideas or concepts but are also innovative, applying their creative ideas.
Movement, Play and Discovery
The three elements that this proposal is implementing to manifest the theme are movement, play and discovery. The goal for the resulting intervention is for the form to become an intersect of paths and modes of movement, a place that allows for both structured and unstructured use and a site that goes against the social norm and allows for imagination and discovery to be common place.

Beyond the Site
To connect the existing waterfront viewpoint that is currently being under used, the via duct would be removed from Blanchard st. to Lenora st. and a reforestation of the area inbetween the proposed site and the viewpoint would be implemented. Paths within the new Belltown forest would then establish a new neighborhood connections between Pike Place market and Belltown thus adding another intersecting social aspect and line of energy.

Inspired by both the clean lines of minimalistic contemporary architecture and the richness and character of ancient and industrial building materials we found the juxtaposition of these two opposing feelings enhanced the intended message of the project – the growth of the new from the old, and the respect for what existed without forcing the continued application of a now obsolete urban design paradigm.
