Senator Turner Appointed to Ballot Board Hopes to bring equity to ballot language Columbus—In January, Senate Democratic Leader Eric Kearney (D-Cincinnati) announced the appointment of Senator Nina Tuner (D-Cleveland) to the Ohio Ballot Board for a four-year term beginning February 5, 2013. “Senator Turner has a passion for fairness and increasing participation in our elections that will be an asset for the Ballot Board,” said Senator Kearney. “She will be a strong voice for our Caucus in representing the rights of Ohio voters.” The Ohio Ballot Board prescribes and certifies the ballot language for proposed Constitutional amendments, initiatives, and referenda. It also overseas efforts to inform voters of proposed ballot issues. The Secretary of State chairs the five-member board. Columbus—Lawmakers from across Ohio were sworn in on January 7 at the Statehouse as the 130th General Assembly officially commenced. Senator Turner took the oath of office to represent the reconfigured 25th District, which now includes portions of both Lake and Cuyahoga Counties. “I look forward to serving alongside so many dedicated public servants over the next two years,” Senator Turner said. “We will be facing some truly momentous issues—from the budget and elections reform to economic development, education, and ensuring that Ohioans have access to a lifetime of opportunities. I am honored to do this important work for my constituents.” The first part of the new legislative session will undoubtedly be focused on the two-year state budget, but Turner hopes to continue some of the work that was begun last year. School funding reform will also play a key role this spring, and Senator Turner’s position on the Finance Subcommittee on Education will allow her to play an important part in the discussion.

Roe v. Wade 40 years + counting

1973— 2013

Washington, D.C.—In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed a woman’s right to privacy in seeking an abortion. The decision, Roe v. Wade, was a landmark case that has resonated loudly throughout the American legal system ever since. Throughout the past four decades, the battle of female reproductive health has shifted to state legislatures. Abortion foes have used creative tactics to decrease the availability of the procedure. For example, the Mississippi state legislature has passed new regulations on abortion clinics that require physicians to obtain admitting privileges at a local hospital. The process has proven nearly impossible, jeopardizing the last remaining clinic in that state. Cumbersome state regulations that could potentially end the availability of abortion were declared legal in the 1992 case, Casey v. Planned Parenthood. This ruling energized the prolife movement to use state level regulations to effectively defund and over-regulate clinics to the point of closure. museum of natural history kicks off campaign for expansion

Cleveland State University has had a busy year expanding its international reach, and now it has the accolades to prove it.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) has launched an ambitious $125 million campaign to renovate and expand its campus in University Circle. Dr. Evalyn Gates, the particle physicist who has led the museum since 2010, wants the new structure to become a hands-on learning lab for green building, science education and environmental stewardship.

CSU produced the second highest number of Fulbright scholars in the nation during the 2012-2013 academic year. The second-place ranking was shared among eight universities, with each producing five Fulbright scholars. Tying for runner-up this year with CSU were Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Rutgers, Texas A&M at College Station, University of Florida, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and University of Washington at Seattle. CSU's Fulbright grant winners are staff members Jayne Mary Fuglister, Rama K. Jayanti, Brian Edward Ray, Janche Sang and Miena Sterio. "This is an important distinction," says Joe Mosbrook, CSU's director of strategic communication. "CSU has an outstanding faculty that's been doing some remarkable things."

"Our role is to give kids a taste of real science with real scientists in a hands-on, minds-on kind of way," says Gates. "We can do things in a museum that can't be done in every classroom. Natural history is about our understanding of the world around us.” CMNH will demolish a portion of its older, 1950sstyle building and renovate the rest of it. The museum also will add two light-filled wings, a glassy lobby, and 300-space parking garage. The re-do will bring activity that now takes place in the bowels of the building -- such as paleontology work -- into a more publicly accessible space where people can more easily see it.
