CYO Robert couldn’t be at the meeting but wanted to get this information to you:

Robert Braswell

St. Mary’s CYO program has three facets —Scouting, Athletics and Teen Youth Ministry. In all three cases, the primary mission of CYO is teaching gospel values through scouting, sports and service. CYO is about about helping young people be more Christ-like in how they live their lives. Growing as an athlete and winning games is great; but it all means nothing if we as parents, coaches, and volunteers do not impart Catholic Christian values in the youth we serve. In the end, we are measured by how our actions fulfill this mission; everything else is secondary. The Archdiocese of Washington has a new coaches certification program that it is implementing that will help our volunteer coaches and leaders help the various parishes fulfill this mission. And each team is to have a primary parent liaison to help the coaches help parents and spectators set the proper tone and decorum at CYO activities. These are positive steps that will benefit us all. Bob Bunge, our scouting director, will share information about our scouting program in a moment. But I’d like to let everyone know that St. Mary’s parish is blessed with an active sports program; fielding soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball teams. Currently, we are fielding four soccer teams: Rookie boys, Rookie girls, JV boys and Varsity Boys. Dave Gioffre is our soccer commissioner and is coaching Rookie girls and Varsity boys. Carlos Hernandez is our JV boys coach and Dion Flynn is our Rookie boys coach. Many thanks to them for their service to our children! In November, basketball will be gearing up; we are blessed to have our new gym and Family Life Center that will host games and practices here at home — something we’ve long desired. And there are plans to launch indoor volleyball teams in the Archdiocese this winter; and St. Mary’s is expected to host many of these games. But none of this can happen without volunteers. We need parents and family members to coach, and volunteer in a variety of ways to support this vital parish ministry. There are no paid positions within CYO; our success requires your support. If interested, please contact Rob Braswell. His information is listed on our parish and school

websites. Our next meeting will be Weds., Oct. 10 at 7 pm in the multipurpose room/
