Archos 7 Home Tablet
The good The Archos 7 Home Tablet delivers a large screen, slim design, microSDHC-based memory expansion, and a
familiar Android operating system, all for an unbeatable price.
The bad Its resistive touch screen is clunky, the processor is sluggish, storage is skimpy, and basic buttons for home
screen and volume control are missing. There's no support for Adobe Flash, Bluetooth, GPS, video output, accelerometer,
digital compass, and multitouch, and previous Archos tablet accessories are incompatible. App support is hit or miss-mostly miss.
The bottom line The Archos 7 Home Tablet isn't going to amaze you with its specs or features, but its low price and core
Android features--Web, e-mail, media playback--make it a workable iPad alternative.

CNET review
Editors' note: Thanks to the release of recent, high-quality tablets. the overall score of the Archos 7 has been adjusted
down from 7 to 5.
We have to give Archos credit for being the first to market with a 100 percent Android tablet and at a price ($199) that's
within reach for most people. If you're looking for an iPad killer, the Archos 7 Home Tablet misses the mark, but it's not
without its redeeming qualities.
Design
Like most tablet computers, the Archos 7 Home Tablet isn't much to look at. It's a plastic slab that measures 8 inches
wide by 4.25 inches tall by 0.5 inch thick; the dimensions feel nice in the hand and may even fit in a generous-size pocket.
Taking a cue from Apple, Archos' tablet design has few buttons and ports. There's a power switch up top, along with a
microSDHC memory expansion slot. On the right side, you'll find sockets for headphones. the included power adapter, and
a Micro-USB port. Apart from the speaker grilles on the front and an integrated plastic kickstand on the back, that's about
all there is to the tablet's design.
If you were hoping for a volume switch or a home button, you'll have to be content with the tablet's onscreen controls.
We can't say we're happy about that, especially given the inherent response latency that comes with resistive touch
screens, compared with the capacitive displays used on many of today's smartphones. In spite of the screen's generous
size, it often took us a few tries to get the onscreen home, back, and volume buttons to respond.
The Archos 7's onscreen keyboard is a different kind of disappointment. Sure, its sluggish touch-screen response is a
drawback, as is the lack of multitouch support and predictive text, but it's the keyboard's tiny spacebar that really has us
singing the blues. The tablet's design is small enough that you naturally want to grab it with both hands and type on it with
your thumbs, like a giant smartphone. Unfortunately, its narrow onscreen spacebar, logically located in the middle of the
keyboard, is just out of thumb's reach, requiring you to cradle the tablet in one hand and type with the other. Since the
tablet doesn't reorient itself when held in portrait mode, there's only one way to type on the screen, and it leaves much to
be desired.
The 7-inch screen on the Archos 7 Home Tablet does have a few qualities working in its favor. The backlit LCD has an
800x480-pixel resolution that gives movies and photos crisp detail and balanced color. The plastic overlay on the LCD
provides a matte, antireflective finish that stands up to outdoor use better than the iPad or iPod Touch. provided you have
the screen brightness cranked. The finish also affords the tablet better resistance to smudges and fingerprints, compared
with the glossy glass screen of the iPad and Touch.
Features
As the Archos 7 Home Tablet comes loaded with Google's Android OS (version 1.5), it includes many core apps, such as email, a Web browser, photo viewer, and media playback for music and videos. Because of hardware limitations, other
features of the smartphone operating system have been removed from the tablet, including apps for camera, maps,
contacts, and messaging.
Another critical distinction to make between the Archos tablet and a conventional Android smartphone is that the included
app store isn't Google's Marketplace, but is instead a collection of able apps selected by Archos. In our conversations with
Archos, company representatives cited several reasons for using its own app store, most notably the fact that many apps
aren't yet optimized for use on tablets and rely on hardware features that aren't available, such as GPS, camera, or
accelerometer control. In the end, users will either need to make do with the app selection provided on the device through
Archos, or do some tinkering to load apps manually. This comes as disappointing news to anyone looking at the Archos 7
Home Tablet as an unrestricted gateway into the world of Android apps.
There are some useful apps for the tablet, though. Twitter fans can the popular Twidroid app. There are games and
Internet radio apps, apps for social networking, and for reading e-books. You probably won't be able to the hot app of the
week, or month, but there's enough substance in the Archos app store to lend the device the kind of mutability you want
from an Android product
The Archos 7 Home Tablet has features that are independent of the Android OS include a pair of predictably tinny built-in
speakers, an integrated microphone, and a microSDHC card slot that supports up to 32GB of additional memory. Out of
the box, the tablet comes with 8GB of internal memory, some of which is used by the operating system.
A 600MHz ARM 9 processor at the heart of the tablet can decode music formats such as MP3, unprotected WMA, WAV,
APE, OGG, FLAC, and AAC, as well as H.264, Real Video, and MPEG-4 video codecs with AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, and FLV file
extensions. It can play back video files with resolutions as high as 720p and at 30 frames per second, although playback
can get a little jerky with large files.
Performance
We've already covered the shortcomings of this tablet's keyboard, the slow response of the touch screen, and some of
the user-interface quirks, so let's dive in to some of the other real-world issues the affect its performance.
The two pillar features of the Archos 7 Home Tablet are Web browsing and e-mail, both of which are provided though
Android. Like most features of the tablet, these apps only work in landscape view, which is sometimes inconvenient, but

mostly forgivable in light of the large screen.
Its Wi-Fi support is limited to 802.11 b/g, which, when coupled with the modest processor, doesn't make for the speediest
browsing experience. In an informal test, we loaded the full version of The New York Times Web site on the Archos 7 Home
Tablet, Apple iPad, and Apple iPod Touch and noted the load time. Connected to our office 802.11g Wi-Fi router, the
Archos 7 tablet took 23 seconds to load the full page, whereas the iPod Touch took 30 seconds and the iPad flew in at 10
seconds. The same test on the San Francisco Chronicle's news site took 41 seconds on the Archos 7, 44 seconds on an
iPod Touch, and 19 seconds on the iPad. Though the Apple iPad costs more than what you'll pay for the Archos 7 Home
Tablet, we think it's fair to say it affords more than double the speed.
Another quirk of the Archos 7 Home Tablet's Web browser that even experienced Android fans will have to adjust to is the
lack of pinch or double-tap zoom control. Touching a Web page brings up icons for zooming in or out of the page, but
tapping or pinching the page does nothing. It may seem like a minor complaint, but in spite of the tablet's relatively large
screen, we still found ourselves needing to zoom in and out frequently. The lack of a gesture-controlled zoom function is
one more way that the Web experience on the Archos 7 Home Tablet is fairly sluggish.
Setting up e-mail on the Archos is smooth as can be. After ing your unread messages, the e-mail app is just about the
snappiest app on the entire device. Unfortunately, two problems plague this particular execution of the Android e-mail app.
The first issue, as we mentioned before, is the onscreen keyboard's cramped spacebar, slow response, and lack of
predictive text and multitouch support. The other major drawback to using the Archos 7 Home Tablet as an e-mail
machine is the lack of a contacts directory. Unless you're simply replying to incoming mail, composing a new mail from
scratch requires you to type the recipient's e-mail manually for every message. Aside from the larger screen of the Archos,
we found the similarly priced iPod Touch and its integrated contacts database to be a more efficient way to compose and
manage e-mails while away from a smartphone or computer.
The Archos tablet's music and video playback performance isn't too shabby. Its media format support is better than many
of the portable media players we've tested and the large screen works nicely to present it all. Bear in mind, though, that
you only get 8GB of built-in storage before you need to supply your own microSDHC cards. It's also worth noting that all
volume control is handled by two awkward onscreen buttons (one for increasing volume and the other for turning it
down). Video playback is also encumbered with the same awkward volume controls, and it has poor viewing angles when
the device is tilted forward or backward.
Video playback is also one of the surest ways to kill battery life, which Archos generously rates at 42 hours of music
playback or 7 hours of video. Those best-case ratings were achieved with the tablet's screen set on low backlight and may
not account for Wi-Fi activity. With Wi-Fi active and the backlight set midway, our unofficial tests found roughly 3 to 4
hours of constant general use--browsing the Web, checking e-mail, playing video--on a full charge. We'll update this review
with official test results from CNET Labs when the data becomes available.

Using ArcTools Google Play / Android Market and
Apps installer for Archos and Arnova tablets
Most Archos and Arnova tablets are not certified by Google and do not offer Google Play Store (formerly Android
Market) and Apps access but provide Archos own Marketplace: Appslib.
The tutorial below applies only to Archos Gen8 Internet Tablets. For other devices, including Arnova G1 . Arnova G2 or
Arnova G3 tablets, you will need a custom firmware, please refer to the “Tablets ” menu above to find your device in the
list, so you will access the custom firmware.

Installating Google Play / Android Market and Apps
with ArcTools (tutorial for Archos Gen8 devices only)
Here is a quick video for this tutorial:
1. Prepare your device.
If you have just installed your machine for the first time, you can skip this step.
In other case, specially if you already have a Market installer application on your device, you need to reset your device
> This will reinstall your system, deleting your installed applications, your video, music and personnal files on /storage folder
and the sdcard are not affected)
Go to Settings Menu. select Repair & formatting

After reboot, please follow the Startup Wizard to setup your device
After installing ArcTools, when you have the Market running, if you are missing some applications in the Market
(for example Google Maps, Youtube, …) there is a fix that should correct the problem and give you full access to
Market applications .
Don’t forget to check out other Arctools features

This method to install Google Play Store / Android Market is designed mainly for ARCHOS Gen8 devices, it won’t on older
Arnova Gen1 and Gen2 tablets.
The best option to install Google Play Store is probably thru a custom firmware. There is one listed on our forum, but the
link looks dead, maybe you can check with the forum poster.

Archos 101 Internet Tablet (Gen8) permanently rooted, loading Developer Edition by default. Followed steps including
resetting (was unnecessary though), then:
– Installed Arctools,
– Downloaded Market & Apps v 3.3.4,
– installed apps,
– rebooted.
Result: Market is available, but upon launch craps out with an error “process com.android.vending has stopped
unexpectedly”.
– Trying to install previous versions won’t work either.
– Trying to remove apps nothing happens so now can’t uninstall the non-working market.

Archos 70 250gb Internet Tablet
I would be grateful if someone could help me with a problem I am encountering. I have ed the Arctools 0.60 and have tried
to Android Market, which is defaulted to v3.0.26, without success. The error message is “error 25 file copy error” in
relation to check the device is not mounted on usb.
The tablet is definitely not mounted on usb. The firmware has been updated to 2.4.81 (Android 2.2.1).

Could the error be due to the updated firmware? Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Every single time I perfectly fine, and then when I press the “install apps” button I get the following two errors:

Does anyone have any advice how to get around these errors?
I’ve tried it on my Archos 7c Home Tablet et it doesn’t work.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. It’s been a week since I’m looking for the Market Application, and nothing worked. Now I have a
new Market and all s are successful.
I was able to get Android Market installed for a friend who had been struggling to configure a google account on his Archos
10 – thanks …
i tray to instal to Prestigio MultiPad PMP3084B
please tel me what version of arctools i need to instal
Hi, I am the new owner of a archos 43. Id like to talk about my experience since it was kind of different from the
screenshot here.
First I had the “error 43” It was resolve by another try, without the usb cable plugged in.
Then at the last step installation, I thought it failed because only 1 line appear after the install.
After the reboot market was installed but hidded (for a noob like me…) On the main desktop I clicked the “III” then,
shortcut, then app, then market. Hope this can help someone.
I am trying to use Arctools with a Coby MID 8024; which I’ve read is possible but please correct me if I’m wrong. This is
my first ever tablet & I’m a complete newbie to Android devices so please bear with me as I learn.
I’ve installed the Arctools apk, which in included in the AppsLib on the Coby, but haven’t been able to get it to install the
Market. The installation proceeds as expected through step 4 then stops with this message. “Error 25: File copy failed –
Android file cannot be accessed. Please check that your device is not mounted on USB.”
Being a bit cautious, I must admit that I didn’t reset the device – even though there is another (non-working) Market
installer apk on it. Could this cause this error?
Regardless, please help me to understand what’s wrong here & how I can fix it.
Best regards, Richard
Richard,
Unfortunately, Coby tablets can run Arctools program, but it won’t be able to help you install Google Market (as stated in
Arctools description on Appslib) ;(
We don’t have much information on how to install Android Market on Coby tablets, but please notify us when you find
something that we could eventually share.
Regards,
I have a question. In this video, after you reset the device, in the setup, you select to not install third party applications.
And AppsLib is installed. But in another video, when the person resets his device, and when setting it up, selects to not
install third party applications. AppsLib does not show up. I know I need to have AppsLib installed to install Arctools, so do I
select TO install third party applications?
Ben,
You can select NOT to install them, appart from Appslib they don’t provide such a great added value and can always be ed
later.
In case Appslib does not get installed, you can get it from their site:
http://files.appslib.com/apps/marketplace/v2/Appslib_2.apk
Thank you very much for your very fast reply!
Will ArcTools still work if I select to install all the third party applications? If I mess up, can my device be ruined?
I want to know if, by doing something on my tablet, like surfing the web or ing AppsLib before I install ArcTools, will it mess
up the tablet?
is arctools working on archos 70b ebook reader?
thanks
i installed this app to the updated 2.3 version of my archos 101 IT. it will take a while for it to update. just be patient. it
works. thank you very much. now i can access android market which has more apps than apps lib itself. thanks again
I have a arnova 10 and when i use arctools i got error 25, the device is approved for arctools.
What causes this error.
Willie,
ArcTools Market installation feature currently doesn’t work on Arnova products.
We recommend that you use our custom firmware to get Android Market and Root access on your device.
Let us know how it goes.
Are there more benefits of the custum firmware.
Can the root acces be disabled, i´m asking this because i´m a linux user on my netbooks and there against working
permantly with a root account like in windows.
If i want to go back to the original firmware cq factory settings is that possible
Willie,
The root access is managed thru “Superuser” application so you can give rights permanently or temporarly for any
application to access root.
Same apply to a shell access thru adb.
You can always go back to the original firmware.
Only drawback of using a custom firmware is that you need to install Archos SDE, which modifies your warranty coverage.
How do you go back to the original firmware, simply by pressing the reset button.
My arnova 10 is now rebooting for 2 hours, the last time i restored factory setting took also a couple of hours, is this
normal.
I had to give it a hard reset with the reset button with a paperclip in order to reboot into the new firmware.

Thanks for sharing. This shouldn’t normally be necesarry, good for you it work.
Is this process equally valid for Archos 7 Home Tablet as well? Thanks.
Nope, ArcTools works on 7HT and other Rockchip based CPU for all functions appart from the Market/apps installation and
removal.
You need to flash a new firmware with the Market if you want it on your device, please check here for Archos 7 HTv2:

I have a archos 32 and ive been trying to get youtube ever since ive had it. I dont have youtube because i dont have flash
player. I cant for some reason. I tired all the different apps and with no success. I tried arc tools and dowladed the apps
with youtube after i rebooted, i still couldent play flash or youtube. So i come and find out that u have to reset your
archos. I havent done that because im not sure what it means when it says ‘installed apps’ and what does it unistall?
Please help!
Zion, Resetting your Archos (as in Settings/Repair&Formattting/Reset Android) will remove installed apps, all your
documents and music/videos will be kept.
This usually helps to clean up the system before installing the market. You should follow the procedure step by step as
shown on the video and tutorial, thousands of people already succeeded in installing the Market. When Market is installed,
you may need to apply the Market fix (see tutorial) to get Youtube and Flash working.

As the site clearly stats, ArcTools Market installation feature does not work on Archos 7/8 HT or eReader.
i’m using a 10.1 and i get the same error
okay i couldn’t get the market to run, it just keeps on opening and closing quickly same as gmail to but maps worked
fine. so i went back to gapps4archos2(froyo) knowing that YouTube didnt work at all. but i used the arctool 0.46 to
remove it(YouTube apk) and then the working one off of market place to make it work. i have market. gmail, calendar etc
all working and trust me i have tried all the other ways with no luck at all. so with the latest firmware by archos 2.1.8 and
gapps4archos2(froyo) combine with arctool 0.46 i have a complete working system to my liking
GREAT WAY TO DO IT
“In short – Install, Reboot, Remove, Reboot, Install, Reboot – Enjoy!”
THANK YOU

250gb 7IT running the new 2.1.8 i did not reset and it works.
You are not going to be able to see yahoo messenger if you did not do it right.
Thank you
I received my 101, updated to the latest firmware, and followed the instructions. Marketplace is now installed and it
appears to be stable. Thanks.
This has only us apps, is there a way get the apps from uk because itbis missing apps that are on my dell streak. I have
done the missing apps fix.
How do you do the fix for all Market apps because on the dell stream there is amazon uk but with the Archos 101 there is
only amazon and that’s us, is there anyway to get uk?
Hi will soon become the proud owner of the Archos 101 8GB excuse me if you do not understand myself when I open it
and charge the battery should the first to update to firmware 2.2.1 and android and the site of the archos and then install
ArcTools first or vice versa ArcTools and then updeyt system. Thanks in advance Bye!
When you get the device, first charge it, upgrade the firmware to latest (current 2.1.08), then follow the procedure to
install ArcTools (starting with a device reset)
Enjoy your 101 😉
Thanks best response ever you are the best.
Try it now, it will work !
I have tried and tried and tried, I just received my Archos 101 toady and I thre latest ArcTools. Everything installed
correctly, but when I try to connect to the market and sign in it keeps saying “can’t establish a reliable data connection” I
have a good connection I am running out of options now. I have no clue on what I should do, I am using froyo 2.2 with
archos 2.1.4 update. Please help!
I need help… I’ve tried this several times on my Archos 70. I can get the market installed, but when I try to open it I have
to set up an account. When I try to set up my Google account it says this:
Can’t establish a reliable data connection to the server. This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be
provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care.
It will not let me sign in at all. everything else on the tablet works great. I don’t get it at all. Please help. Thank you.
Arctools was not available on my Applibs so I did the . After the reboot, the Android Marketplace is not there. Advice?
ArcTools should be seen on Appslib for compatible devices. Do you have a Generation 8 (101,70,43,32 or 28) Internet
tablet ?
Ok just got my new Archos 101 and followed all the steps to get the android market and when seting signing into my
google accout for the market I keep getting “cant establish reliable data conection” give up it dosent work any ideas??
WORKS PERFECT in Archos 70 250gb
Thanks for all,
Now this blog is in my favs 😉
Ok so I got my Archos 101 and I went to conect to my Wi-Fi and it says that it IS connected, but when I go to get on the
Internet it says, Server error, please check your connection. My Wifi says that it is Secured with WPA/WPA2 PSK, so I dont
know what to do now?

No luck. Just recently acquired 70IT, loaded a few Applib apps and upped to 2.1.4. Don’t want to delete & reload all my
applications ,settings, etc. So tried the ‘Install, Reboot, Remove, Reboot, Install, Reboot’ sequence. The icon for MKT
appeared, but simply opens to a white screen and immediately closes again. Any advice please?
So far Resetting the device is the only way to make sure the Market installs properly. We are trying to find a better
method, we will update the program and tutorial if it happens. Meantime, we still recommend that you Reset your device,
you can use tools such as Astro to backup your existing applications.
Thank you very much – and yes, after a reset the installation was successful. And Astro worked too for backing up and
restoring my few ed applications. Perhaps it would be good to include this advice in your step-by-step tutorial. However,
the reset did lose my email accounts as well as a full set of bookmarks, which, unlike my contacts, were not recovered. So
if you can find a way to avoid a reset for people in future that would be a considerable advantage.
I am getting an Archos 101 in 2 days and was wondering, if I install Marketplace can I still use AppsLib also?
Alisha,
You can use both, or remove one or the other if you want.
One more questions….can I get Hulu on Archos 101. If so how? I have read a few things some people say yay some
people say nay….
Alisha,
Can’t find “hulu” on the market either. Can you check if you find it there: https://market.android.com or give us an URL
with the exact program reference.
Thank you.
I followed the whole procedure …and managed to install the android market. However, i still cannot install any apps from
the market. The s get stuck at Starting Download stage and fail to proceed any farther.
Is there any fix for this?
Hi, Im new to the whole droid and market situation.
But anyway, I am currently staring at my Archos 32 that I just recieved for my birthday and I read that If I want ALL the
apps (even the ones u shouldnt because it isn’t a phone) That this was the place to be.
Anyway, The date is 2/5/11 so im unsure of what version of what it is running, But my question is this. If I just follow the
video above, Skipping step one, it SHOULD work out? Or is there someupdate when u get a brand new tablet that I should
avoid?
Newguy,
We recommend that you first update your firmware to 2.1.4. Then you can follow the other steps from the tutorial or
video.
Resetting your new device will get the benefit of having a 64 mb swap on firmware 2.1.x
Keep us posted if any problem.
when are you going to let us know about the fix to put google maps and youtube on the device?
Steve,
The Market fix is here. it’s in mentioned in the tutorial. A video for that procedure will be added pretty soon.
Please let us know if you have any problem.
I am getting an Archos 101 in the next couple of days, and wish to install Android Market on it.
If I should get peoblems as some people seem to have, can I reset the Android and go back to the original?
Tim,
Sure, ArcTools procedure cannot harm your device, in the worse case, you can always factory reset.
You’ll see it’s pretty easy to follow the procedure and it should work pretty quick. If not just come back and ask !
Have fun with your new 101.
just installed it and it works fine.
i just bought a archos 101 8gb and i can’t access google play/android market. I already instslled Arc Tools but do anything
with it…
After upgrading to version 2.2 and installed arctools and reboot (as following the article), my device is booting repeatedly.
what to do next to get my archos working again?
tq

Thanks a million. Version 0.36 installed, had to play with it for about 5 minutes but I have the full google marketplace!
Thanks much for creating arctools. I was pretty bummed to find out that I bought a droid (archos70) that idd not have
access to the larger droid apps Market I installed the Arctools, and was able to access markets this was a huge relief,
having issues with flash but I am new to Droid platform so issue might be me or the notorius DFU error.
Anyway thanks again I’ll keep looking for your updates
No gmail.apk installed… what’s wrong?
Thanks a lot. Before using Arctools, I have GAppsinstaller_v4.apk installed and running fine on Froyo 2.2 v.2.0.71 on my
Archos 70.
After I and install Arctools from this web, I skip the reset steps and directly go to step 4 and follow all the way through
your instruction. I can now see Google Maps and Google Voice and install it from the new Market.
Thanks a lot for the instruction.

Corner cutter – ok so having been in IT for years I had to cut corners – so
1. Downloaded to PC, move to Archos 70IT via USB
2. Intentionally did not reset Archos – lazy man
3. Installed Market 2.2.7 (no apps appeared on remove list)

– Previously had gApps4Archos v1 with Android 2.1 working
– Upgrade to 2.2 and gApps4Archos2 – No Noy
4. Same old open close No Joy
5. Rebooted, again No Joy
6. Tried cache/force routine but no Google Framework appearing
6. Used Arctools to Remove all – 12 Apps removed
– not sure if it was app or my fat fingers but I did find myself in AirPlane mode at this point
7. Re- Downloaded and Installed, Rebooted
8. Immediately MarketPlace is working – had to re-enter email, accept eula, ed youtube, maps, etc
9. Every App I previously had ed works, all new apps work
In short – Install, Reboot, Remove, Reboot, Install, Reboot – Enjoy!
BTW Haven’t seen any artifacts
Thank you Team ArcTools!
@jtbarbera
Thanks a lot, dude!
Works perfectly and no need to reset my archos. (70IT, with gApps4Archos previously installed and tablet updated
yesterday to 2.071, market down since that point…)
Did not work for me….can’t open arc tools
