Seneca grad gives life-saving gift this holiday
After being introduced to the Be The Match program in college, Joe Pawlowski donates bone marrow
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The holiday season is all about
giving, though some gifts are bigger than others.
In Joe Pawlowski’s case, giving
the gift of life through donating
bone marrow to someone he had
never met before is as big as it
gets.
A bone marrow transplant can
save the life of someone battling
leukemia, lymphoma or other
blood cancers. Each year,
leukemia kills more children
than any other cancer, and 70 percent of patients in need of a marrow transplant do not have a
matching donor in their family.
To register as a bone marrow
donor, a person swabs the inside
of his or her cheek to provide the
DNA needed to identify if he or
she is a bone marrow match for
someone.
Pawlowski, the former class of
2013 Seneca High School football
standout who grew up in Shamong, is now playing at the collegiate level for Lycoming College.
This is where Pawlowski got involved with the Be The Match
program.
Former Bucknell University
head football coach Tim Landis is
now the recruiting coordinator
for Lycoming where he also handles the quarterbacks on the field.

SKIP HARRIS/Special to The Sun

Former Burlington County second-team all-conference standout for the Golden Eagles, Joseph Pawlowski, runs the ball in a game his junior year at Seneca High School. Pawlowski went on to play at the collegiate level at Lycoming College where he used his platform to promote the importance of being a bone
marrow donor.
Along with his football savvy,
he brought his knowledge of the
program to his new school and introduced it to the team with the
intention of having it promote it.

Pawlowski not only promoted the
program, he got involved in it.
After being placed on the registry, he was told he might be contacted within the next few

months, years or not at all.
Pawlowski went on to go
through a number of doctor’s appointments that entailed a multitude of tests including blood

work. He was then made aware he
had matched with someone and
was given the option of donating
bone marrow to this person to
help save their life.
“I was really just playing the
odds, to be honest. The odds of
me getting picked were so small
that when I found out I did, it was
kind of hard to say no,” Pawlowski said.
The program is private in the
sense that he was not given much
information about the man he
would be donating to, just his age,
disease type and country.
However, Pawlowski did mention the donor’s family sent him
letters of appreciation before he
went into surgery.
“Those
were
special,”
Pawlowski said.
Before the surgery took place,
Pawlowski had to go through
some pre-surgery procedures the
day before his game against
Delaware Valley College on Nov.
7.
Pawlowski was still able to play
in that game and help his team
record a much-needed victory.
However, the surgery was then
scheduled for the following Saturday during his final game of the
season against Misericordia College on Nov. 14, so he was forced
to miss the season finale.

decided not to take the test were
encouraged to read during the
test taking period.
While the results of the PARCC
testing were revealed to the public at last week’s LRHSD Board of
Education meeting, student participation results were not provided by the state Department of Education and there was no analysis
on how participation rates could
impact school and district performance.
However, the Department of
Education shared some information last spring, inferring the
largest percentage of students
who did not participate in the
PARCC in New Jersey were high
school students, with the greatest
number of test refusals occurring
in 11th grade.

Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said the district's staff provided quiet, gentle encouragement for all students to take the
test. However, the district did not
single out students for refusing
the test, as it will not be a graduation requirement for students in
high school until 2019.
A large initial concern of parents in the district had to do with
what would happen to these kids
who decided against taking the
test.
A group of parents attended a
board meeting after the PARCC
testing was implemented to encourage the district to pass a policy for students choosing to opt
out of the PARCC test, so the students would not have to “sit and
stare.”
Their message was heard and
the district did not enforce a “sit

THE SHAMONG SUN — DEC. 23–29, 2015

in our opinion

DD program should expand

108 Kings Highway East
Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Towns, counties, maybe even state should look at Evesham, Voorhees initiative
Dan McDonough Jr.

ince September, Evesham Township has been helping to save
lives – quite literally, in its
words. That month, the township
launched a pilot program funded entirely through private donations from
businesses, groups and even citizens
that provided residents of the town
with a free ride home from a townshipbased bar or restaurant if they had too
much to drink.
The program, called Evesham Saving Lives, partnered with popular DD
services such as Uber and BeMyDD to
keep potential drunk drivers off the
streets.
The program worked well in the initial pilot stage, and so, it was expanded
another month. And then another. And
another. In the program’s first 100
days, officials said 800 residents used
the service. Only two of the Evesham
residents arrested for DWI during that
time came from any of the 19 locations
in town where the program is avail-

able. Before the program started, nearly 60 percent of those arrested for DWI
in Evesham were residents of the
town. During the program, that number dropped all the way to 5 percent.
Last week, Voorhees Township, Evesham’s next-door neighbor but across
county lines, partnered with Evesham
to jump on board the program. Now,
residents of either township can get a
free ride home from any establishment
in either town to keep them from making the dumb decision of getting behind the wheel while they are impaired.
This new partnership is set to run
through Jan. 15, with donations funding it through that time. Evesham
Mayor Randy Brown, a Republican,

has said he’ll make sure it continues in
his town indefinitely, and Voorhees
Mayor Michael Mignogna, a Democrat,
is happy to offer the program as well.
The Saving Lives program is a wonderful example of bipartisan politics:
A Republican-controlled town government in one county partners with a Democrat-controlled town government in
the next county over to do what government is intended to do – help keep
its constituents safe.
This is a highly commendable program – one that works, both in theory
and in practice. The two town governments should be thanked, but so, too,
should the generous unnamed businesses, groups and residents who have
provided the donations to run it.
Now, the next step should be expansion again – maybe with the help of
more towns, counties or even the state,
who could provide funding so private
donations weren’t needed.
Let’s make this happen.

PARCC measures college and career readiness
PARCC
Continued from page 4
LRHSD students in grades nine, 10 and
11 exceeded or equaled statewide percentages of students scoring Level 4 or better
and average overall scores for all English
language arts assessments.
District-wide math results varied by
subject. LRHSD algebra II results exceeded
the state average percent of students scoring Level 4 or better while LRHSD algebra
I and geometry results were below the state
average percent of students scoring Level 4
or better.

Justin Smith, the district’s assessment,
accountability and planning coordinator,
noted approximately 33,000 New Jersey
students took the PARCC algebra I and/or
geometry assessment in middle school.
Those advanced students’ scores do not factor into LRHSD’s outcomes.
“A more equitable comparison for
PARCC algebra and geometry would be to
compare the LRHSD average to the New
Jersey average of students in grades nine
through 11 and not the entire cohort of algebra and geometry test-takers in New Jersey,” Smith said. “This comparison, of
LRHSD scores to scores of only high
school students in New Jersey, revealed the
LRHSD met or exceeded the New Jersey

average percent of students scoring Level 4
or better for both algebra I and geometry.”
PARCC establishes a specific emphasis
on measuring college and career readiness.
Due to the drastic difference and increased difficulty in PARCC testing, the
board is encouraging folks to avoid comparing these results with the HSPA and
past standardized tests.
“PARCC is a whole new ball game, a
clean slate in terms of assessment,” Smith
said. “There is no comparison to the HSPA
and, tempting as it may be, parents and students should not make comparisons to past

HSPA and is more closely aligned
with the SATs and other college
entrance exams.”
Birnbohm said Common Core
and PARCC’s increased difficulty
is not different from changes the
state has made in standardized
testing in the past.
“We have a history of increasing rigor in our standards,” she
said.
Birnbohm described PARCC as
an opportunity for students to
perfect their skills. She noted
other tests such as the SAT are
being aligned to Common Core
State Standards in 2016 and will
feature questions similar to
PARCC.
“This is another chance for
them to practice and show their
proficiency,” Birnbohm said.
LRHSD is now actively en-

gaged in reviewing and analyzing
the first year PARCC data and
preparing for the 2016 and future
PARCC assessments, with an emphasis on student success.
“Our data team is working
with the administrative teams in
each of the schools to ensure they
understand and communicate
about PARCC in general and put
the results in context,” Birnbohm
said. “Teachers will be able to utilize our new common planning
time, built into the new four day
rotating schedule, to analyze
PARCC data, our curriculum and
our pacing guides.
“We understand this is a new
assessment and there will be
growth over time, but most importantly, we understand the
PARCC is only one measure of a
student’s success. We rely on
many indicators (teacher input,
class grades, PSAT, AP, etc.) to
help shape a student’s program in
order to support all of our students in reaching their goal of either two graduations (high school
and then college) or a career.”
