IWSP also has the potential to lead to full-time employment after graduation.
How did your time with TUM prepare you for work? At TUM, we had to learn from our mistakes and deal with failures, and it actually taught me to be much more independent. What advice would you give to students entering the course? I will say that you must learn how to deal with people and be independent, that’s the most important thing. And of course, prepare well for interviews!

StUdy-work seqUence and dUratIon
The programmes awarded by SIT will have an academic calendar based on a trimester system: • Trimester 1: Sep to Dec • Trimester 2: Jan to Apr • Trimester 3: May to Aug Depending on the programme, different study-work sequences are possible. How did you get your current job? DigiPen held a career fair where each of us managed a booth to showcase our projects to potential employers. This gave us the opportunity to promote ourselves with the hopes of securing an interview. I managed to get a few interviews then. What do you think makes a good game designer or programmer? Mainly, passion; because it’s easy to play a game, but it takes a lot of effort to programme one. It really takes perseverance and effort. So it’s the passion that will drive you to make a better game for people to enjoy. Any advice for your juniors? Never lose your passion, because that’s what employers are looking out for too. “The specialised knowledge that I gained in class helped me to better understand the inner workings of a ship. This helps me to communicate effectively in the course of my work at the shipyard, with people of all levels and from different backgrounds.” Fion Heng Pei Ting Commercial Officer, Jurong Shipyard Class of 2013 BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering, Newcastle University

ALUMNI
Once a SITizen, always a SITizen!
The SIT experience is for life. Our students’ relationship with SIT will continue even after graduation, as will the privileges given to them. SIT alumni keep in touch with one another, and with SIT, through alumni network events. Our alumni also contribute back to the learning experience of SIT students by playing the roles of mentors, career advisers and speakers. Upon graduation, our alumni will receive the SIT Alumni Card which gives them many benefits and privileges, including entry to SIT’s exclusive networking events.

Do you think what you learnt at school is applicable to your work now? My diploma was in Mechanical Engineering, so this specialised degree in Marine Engineering gave me the technical knowledge needed for working at a shipyard. Tell us a bit about your work. As a Commercial Officer, I assist the superintendent whenever ships dock at the yard for repairs. I liaise with the superintendent and the production team to ensure that repairs are completed smoothly and as soon as possible. I get to go on board ships every day. I like that the job is not desk-bound. I also get to meet people from different countries and cultures, as the ships and their crew come from different countries. Communicating with people of different backgrounds is one of the most challenging aspects of my job, and it’s something I’m still learning every day. Although we start work early and have to work under the hot sun wearing thick boilersuits, I find that my work is very rewarding. Every time I see a ship set sail, I get an immense sense of achievement.

SIT Career Talk @ RedDot Brewhouse Close to 50 SIT Alumni and Year 2 students attended the Advancement & Alumni Division’s first Career Talk “How to Have a Great Career” on 21 Mar 2013, at RedDot Brewhouse @ Boat Quay. Mr Jonathan Kwan, principal of Kwantum Leap Career Coaching, shared strategic tips with the audience on how to jump-start one’s career.

SIT Alumni Movie Night Our alumni had a howling good time at the screening of The Wolverine, at Filmgarde Bugis+ on 1 Aug 2013. The Alumni Leisure Network organised this first SIT Alumni Movie Night.

“Our Overseas Immersion Programme in California was an amazing eye-opener. I also had the opportunity to work in New York at one of the top restaurants in the world. This global exposure really helped to build up my skills, knowledge and connections.” Mark Tai Wei Jie Chef de Partie, Esquina Tapas Bar Class of 2013 BPS Culinary Arts Management, The Culinary Institute of America

How did your time with CIA prepare you for work? Through CIA, I was able to go overseas and build up my connections. For example, I worked at Eleven Madison Park, one of the top restaurants in the world, and got to take part in their collaboration with another top restaurant, Alinea. The two restaurants did a “pop-up” where staff from both restaurants could learn from each other and exchange pointers. The exposure was great and really enhanced my skills. What have you learnt at work so far that stands out for you? One thing that’s really important in a restaurant is speed – meeting deadlines. We have a small kitchen and start everything from scratch, so it’s really important to be able to deliver quickly. Nothing beats the satisfaction of sitting together with your colleagues after a busy day, knowing you’ve pushed yourself hard and done your best.

Mizuno PAssion Mount Faber Run Our sporting alumni who took part in the Mizuno PAssion Mount Faber Run held on 13 Oct 2013 were joined by SIT staff members at this Alumni Leisure Network event. Among them were Advancement & Alumni Division’s Senior Manager Teo Poh Heng (front row, second from right wearing blue bandana) and Manager Florence Lang (front row, extreme right). Contact Poh Heng or Florence at [email protected]  to find out more about our Alumni Networks.

SIT Alumni Career Talk: Tackling Entrepreneurship as a Fresh Graduate - The JobsCentral Journey Mr Lim Der Shing, co-founder and CEO of JobsCentral, gave a candid talk on the challenges he overcame in the setting up of JobsCentral while he was still a new graduate. Titled “Tackling Entrepreneurship as a Fresh Graduate - The JobsCentral Journey”, the Alumni Career Network event attracted about 80 attendees. It was co-organised by SIT’s Advancement & Alumni Division and the Career Services Division on 17 Oct 2013 at Grand Park City Hall.

OUr LOCATIONS
Through a unique tripartite collaboration with its overseas university partners and the five local polytechnics, SIT represents a new model that is set to become a key pillar of university education. SIT adopts a distributed campus model where an SIT building will be constructed within the grounds of the each of the five Polytechnics. This model allows greater synergy and efficiency by giving SIT students greater access to existing resources within each Polytechnic. Through this model, SIT’s degree programmes will be housed within an SIT building in each of the polytechnics to cater to a gradual increase of students each academic year. We will also have a building at Dover, which will house our administrative offices, and some of our degree programmes.
