INTRODUCTION
SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF MANUFACTURING

PROBLEMS Inflexibility Waste Inconsistency Complication Meandering Impatience Permissiveness sloth

• INCONSISTENCY • It is the chief deadly sin of manufacturing. • It puts a plant’s , department’s , function’s interest before the interests of the company as a whole. • According to Kenneth Boulding’s phrase- “SUBOPTIMISATION IS THE NAME OF THE DEVIL”. • It means consciously, happily, and often scientifically doing what seems right for the plant, department or function but what in the end, the company may not want or need.

• It is often caused by the diverse interests tugging and pulling on production people. • EFFECTS • Deliveries are not on time. • Costs are too high. • Poor quality. • Delay in launching new products. • Snubbed by rest of the competition.

• It is evident that to become world class, manufacturing has to do many things well. • In addition to producing output of consistently high quality on time and at low cost, it must be flexible enough to accommodate diverse models, fluctuating volumes and new product introductions.
