Dear Parent/Carer, Post-16 participation and attainment levels in Richmond upon Thames are high and improving, but the Council is committed to expanding the choice and diversity of post-16 provision in the borough. In December 2010, the authority published a report, Choice and Diversity: a policy paper for Education and Children¶s Services 2010 that set out the intention to create high-quality sixth forms within the borough¶s schools and academies. An online survey of school and college students, parents and other local people in March-May 2011 showed strong demand for high-quality sixth forms to be established in the secondary schools and academies within the borough: 87% of the 1,325 respondents indicated that they would like to see school sixth forms in the borough, whilst 10% indicated that they would not. The borough¶s µSixth Forms Forum¶ ± consisting of: the headteachers/principals of the eight schools and academies and the Head of the Newhouse Centre; the principals of the two further education colleges; senior elected members; and senior officers ± has considered both an overarching feasibility report into the establishment of sixth forms and a more detailed report into the accommodation that would be required. As a result, the Forum has approved in-principle the proposal to establish sixth forms in the borough in September 2014. The Forum has also agreed that the sixth forms would be established under the umbrella of µRichmond upon Thames Post-16 Partnership¶, with a degree of commonality in various matters, such as marketing (with a combined offer matrix), the application process, daily and weekly curriculum structure, and enrichment. The Partnership would like Richmond upon Thames College to play a central role by continuing to provide an outstanding curriculum offer to local young people. The Partnership would also like to benefit from the College¶s expertise in Continuous Professional Development (CPD), Information Advice and Guidance (IAG), the UCAS application process, enrichment and post-16 management/governance. Work is continuing in developing the details of the curriculum offer, and the views of Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils, and of staff, have begun to be canvassed. As you know, in addition, the Local Authority have asked Christ¶s to consider taking an additional form of entry from September 2013. This would mean that the number of pupils admitted each year from that date would be 150. The Governing Body have for some time lobbied the Authority to enable this expansion, not least because of the economies of scale that it would bring to the school¶s management of its budget. However, before the school¶s Governing Body considers the proposal to add an extra form of entry AND a sixth form, it would like to hear your views on the principle of adding a sixth form. To that end, if you would like to submit your views, please do so by email to [[email protected]] or by rd writing to me, by no later than Friday 3 February. We are also holding a consultation evening at school to hear your views on both options on st Wednesday February 1 at 7.00pm.

The school¶s governors would then take your views into account before deciding whether it should approve, in principle (and subject to detail), the proposed establishment of a sixth form. If the th governors do take an in-principle decision, the Council would, probably on Friday 24 February, issue a formal, statutory proposal to establish the sixth form. The proposal would contain considerable detail, including the size of the sixth form and the range of courses that would most likely be offered. You, other parents, local residents and other interested parties would then have four weeks to express your views on the proposal. The Council¶s Cabinet, acting as µlocal decision-maker¶, would then consider the proposal and the responses to it and decide whether or not it should be approved. These are exciting times for our school, however your views are, of course, a very important part of the decision-making process and I look forward to receiving them. Best wishes

R.E. Burke Headteacher
