Stratford‟s Dangerous "Smart Meters"
The huge increase in radiation around Stratford caused by smart meters and city wide Wi Fi is a very serious long term danger to residents. The health of some people is likely to be severely compromised by exposure to the radiation. I have seen several of the meters and taken measurements near homes that have them, and I have found that strong radiation levels from smart meters are penetrating through house walls. They are exposing residents to dangerous electro magnetic pollution inside their homes. Of particular concern are homes where the meter is mounted on the same wall as a bedroom or a room where any occupant spends much time. Even more worrying are homes that have multiple meters mounted just outside living areas, such as some townhouses, some apartments and some multiple residence units. Having multiple meters can cause even higher radiation levels and more danger for the persons exposed. It appears that each meter transmits radiation at different strengths and at different time periods, depending on the distance the signal has to travel, the physical barriers between the meter and the collection point, and the number of meters using the meter as a stepping stone to pass their information along the line to the collection point. The only way that a person will know the strength and danger of the radiation is by having the home and property measured with a good quality radio frequency meter. Home yards and gardens have now become zones of strong pulsing microwave radiation. Children should be kept well away from playing near any smart meters. Even the radiation at a distance can be quite strong and potentially harmful. The smart meters that I have measured during the last two weeks have emitted strong radiation, pulsing on and off almost continuously. This may cause many harmful effects, including, headaches, sleeping difficulties, heart problems, etc. In the long term, there may be many serious health problems, including various cancers, immune system damage, neurological problems, and other serious illnesses. Recently, near Stratford, Ontario, I came across my first 'smart meter'. With my radio frequency meter, I found that the meter was sending out very strong pulses of microwave radiation every few seconds. This puzzled me, as to why so much radiation was being emitted. When I received the message below and also the story below that, I understood why this was happening. Hydro One meters throughout Ontario are repeating wireless information from each other and causing far more radiation than one could ever have imagined! Two types of smart meters
Dan and I thought all of you may be interested in knowing that there are two types of smart meters. The one that is being installed across Ontario that Dan and others are sensitive to and an other type, one that is hard wired to your phone system. Although to date we have not been granted an exemption, our local power company has agreed to install the hard wired non emf meter. They will pay for the meter and we are required to pay $50 per month for the dedicated Bell phone line for the meter. This is a solution that will enable us to live in our home and we will continue the battle regarding the exemption. I am certain that you feel as we do that we should not be forced to pay for the phone line however that issue needs to be resolved in a different forum. Kelly

Dear Ms. Yamamoto, I am writing to express my concern over a provision of the Clean Energy Act which is currently before the legislature. My specific concern is that this piece of legislation, as written, apparently does not give homeowners the choice to opt out of using the proposed wireless meters, which are known to emit radiation that is unsafe. Citizens across North America are concerned about the increased electromagnetic pollution such wireless meters will generate, without regard to a person's age or health. The California Public Utilities Commission has been asked to mandate providing citizens with the ability to opt-out (refer http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/EFILE/A/116285.htm ) and included below is a letter from an Ontario resident which details the negative health effects from such wireless meters. My understanding is that the Clean Energy Act, intended to be passed this session, exempts smart meters from any public discussion and, if this is indeed the case, I think it's disgraceful. Stratford - Death by Smart Meter and Wi Fi
After receiving the information below and seeing the photograph which is attached, I went to the house in Stratford, Ontario, to see this dying shrub for myself. I was shocked at the amount of harm caused to the plant. I was able to see that the dying and sick leaves were much worse than the photograph shows. The smart meter had only been installed about two months ago yet there were several leaves that had completely withered up, as if they had been dried in place. Many other leaves showed signs of disease, with dozens of small dry spots spread across the leaves. The damage spread out for at least three feet from the smart meter. Leaves several feet away were very healthy, they were bright green with no signs of harm.
Another meter attached to the house next door was about eighteen feet away and many leaves on the tree, which were close to that meter, were changing colour. I measured the microwave radiation between the houses and it constantly spiked over two thousand microwatts per square metre. The radiation was almost continuous, one powerful spike after another. This City wide Wi Fi, smart meter system is very powerful, highly dangerous and must be stopped. Fighting this danger is part of my election platform in the Stratford Municipal Election. What are the Health Concerns of Smart Meters?
We are electromagnetic biochemical beings ourselves and our cells have evolved attuned to the planet‟s electromagnetic pulses, which occur normally between 11 and 13 hz (cycles per second). Our cells are affected by man-made electromagnetic radiation. San Diego Gas and Electric states their smart meters transmit at 900 MHZ (megahz), or 900 million cycles per second. Limits on RF (radio frequency) exposure levels for the general public are currently obsolete. Based on one single exposure from one device, and calculated for an 185-pound, 6-foot male, they only measure the thermal effects. That is, how much radiation would it take to cook him? Independently- funded studies show some symptoms of over-exposure to radio frequency radiation are: irritability, rage, sleep disorders, short-term memory loss, lowered fertility in male and female, headaches, nausea, anxiety, accelerated aging, abnormal growths of cells and brain tumors. Smart meters are a huge increase in levels of electromagnetic smog. On the outside, a meter on every home, business or apartment building would be transmitting to the utility company and inside, the meter would be transmitting to the appliances, pulsing once, or more often, every minute, day and night. Smart meters act as receivers and also as re-transmitters, carrying your neighbor‟s signals, to another repeater on utility poles. One house could be a repeater for 500 other homes. An apartment building could have an array of hundreds of meters, with an unknown cumulative amount of radio frequency radiation. Dear Committee Members Smart Meters that are being installed in Ontario, use strong microwave radiation signals to send information about energy use, to electricity providers. Microwave radiation has many adverse health effects at exposure levels which are a fraction of what the Federal Government says is safe. The Federal
Government bases their safety levels, simply on heating effects and they completely ignore biological effects on the brain, nervous system, DNA, blood and various other areas of the body. The smart meter systems (using microwave radiation) that are likely to be installed in apartments throughout Ontario are already obsolete and should not be considered for any future use. This is because of the health harm that may occur to persons who will be exposed to radiation from them. The danger posed by microwave radiation is well known and well researched. The adverse health effects have been known for many years. It would be irresponsible for the Ontario Government to force large numbers of the population to be exposed to microwave radiation. A comparison of the danger, may be spraying all apartments in Ontario with small amounts of dangerous poisons, irritants, harmful emissions and dangerous gasses. These poisons may not harm people in the short term, but over a long period of time they are likely to cause a large amount of significant harm to health. It is important for the Members of the Ontario Legislature and the members of this committee, to learn about the adverse health effects of microwave radiation, before this bill is considered and before a vote on the subject. The Government must not cause further environmental and health harm to the citizens of Ontario. Many of the modern diseases which are plaguing the world today have been scientifically linked to microwave radiation and other forms of electro magnetic radiation. Signals from apartment smart meters will not simply travel from the meter to the reception point, they are likely to travel on the electrical systems that circulate around apartment buildings and may harm the tenants by re-radiating inside the apartments. Yesterday I was visiting an apartment in Stratford where the electrical meters (previously installed when the building was new) were located in a room next to the apartment. If, all of these meters were changed to „smart meters‟ emitting microwave radiation, this apartment, and others nearby, may become unliveable. All humans are sensitive to electro magnetic radiation. The tremendous increase of electro magnetic radiation, because of wireless devices, is causing many people to become more sensitive and others are becoming electro hyper-sensitive. If the Ontario Government contributes to the amount of electrical pollution, it may be very difficult for some people in Ontario to live normal lives. Electro sensitivities, made worse by the Government installing smart meters may lead to huge legal claims against the Province. If many people develop significant illnesses because of exposure to electro magnetic radiation, the Provincial health system is likely to break down. Please do not under estimate the dangers posed by this new wireless pollution. The cost to implement smart meters to all apartment buildings around Ontario will be huge, with little likelihood of any major energy savings. In coming years, as more knowledge about the health effects of microwave radiation emerge, there is a real chance that all these new „Smart Meters‟ will have to be replaced with
„safe ones‟ again, at a huge cost. The government should not be experimenting with the health and safety of its citizens. If you do implement a plan to put meters in apartment buildings, you must ensure there is true value to the investment and that they are safe and do not emit radio frequencies or microwave radiation. Dear Mr. Watts, Further to our very interesting conversation several days ago about Smart Meters and EMF/RF, please see the link above from France about cows/disease/high voltage that we discussed as a horrible problem that has been plaguing farmers and their livestock in industrialized nations for decades. Finally, a French court has recognized this problem and has awarded damages. The toxic load of environmental pollution we all live in, which Hydro 1 unfortunately is now contributing to by forcing us all to live with the added burden of the radio frequency emissions of Smart Meters only exacerbates the ill health that we all find ourselves plagued with. Remember Canadian statistics presently for cancer are epidemic ... 1 in 2.5 women and 1 in 2.3 men (CBC Marketplace Wendy Mesley „Chasing the Cancer Answer‟ 2006). You stated that the Smart Meter will function on 2.4 gigahertz microwave and you seemed convinced that I should be comforted by that fact, especially since you assured me that it was as “safe as a baby monitor”. 2.4 GHz is the same frequency that blasts us from cell phones, cordless phones, WiFi computers and WLAN in our homes and schools. Now for a bit of a history lesson about the US Embassy in Moscow during the time period from 1953 to the 1970‟s into which the Russians beamed
microwaves at 2.4 GHz. Apparently 2 consecutive ambassadors died of cancer, another developed leukemia and bleeding eyes, 16 women developed breast cancer, while others suffered immune system disorders, high white blood cell counts, chromosomal breaks, chronic fatigue, blurred vision, etc.
You assured me that the criteria for the RF emissions of the Smart Meters is safe since it complies with Canada Safety Code 6; however, our Canadian standards have drastically lagged behind the rapid growth of this new wireless technology rendering it effectively obsolete to protect humans while creating an advantage for the telecommunications industry and now apparently for Hydro 1 as well. Adding a Smart Meter to every single home in Ontario while you claim it is „within standards‟ only adds to every single person‟s radiation burden in the province. The Russians apparently have microwave standards for public exposure that are 100 times more stringent that those in North America. I wonder why? Do I want a Smart Meter? Absolutely not. Do I want cancer. Not! I sincerely hope that Hydro 1 will respect the wishes of people such as myself and not impose this electricity monitoring system with its added radiation burden on my family home. I know it has taken a long time to recognize the livestock/EMF problem illustrated in the above link, just as the connection between tobacco and asbestos are now recognized as being linked with cancer. The current research on wireless technology, which is now vast, is rapidly identifying EMF/RF as a significant risk factor and is supporting the disease connection between humans/animals and EMF/RF. Letter to BC Hydro
Dear Ms. Verschoor: I am writing to express my concerns regarding BC Hydro's plan to install 'smart' meters on every BC home. Although I applaud the effort to conserve energy and do as much conservation as I can, there are other issues at stake here. Namely, the fact that these meters use wireless transmitters, which rely on signals in the microwave spectrum similar to cell phones and WiFi computer systems. This band, between the 900 Mhz to 2.4 Ghz range, has been shown in numerous independent international studies to have effects on human health at power levels even below those commonly used to transmit these
signals. Our bodies rely on electrical signals to function; our cells, like any communication network, rely on them to repair and sustain themselves. Pulsed radiation from microwaves disrupts cellular communication in biological systems. Some scientific studies have shown that cellular damage is done by repeated exposure to microwave signals, including DNA strand breaks. While single strand DNA breaks can be repaired by the body, double strand breaks cannot, and become genetic mutation that is passed on to offspring. Aside from that, the experience with smart meters in California has not been encouraging. Citizens have complained of numerous health issues, including heart rate problems, high blood pressure, insomnia, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, etc. Part of the problem is that our civilization is currently layering one form of electromagnetically-powered device over another, so the effects are cumulative. By introducing yet another layer with smart meters, we are setting the stage for more widespread chronic illness and eventually cancers of various kinds. Even the recently released Interphone study, which has been largely discredited by reputable scientists, showed a 40% increase in certain types of brain tumours with heavy use of cell phones. In fact the rate is much higher according to studies whose methodology has been properly conducted, probably closer to a 200% higher incidence of tumours. The other issue in California has been that the smart meters apparently are not at all accurate and have resulted in numerous incidences of conflict between the utility company and clients who say they have been grossly overcharged. The utility then relies exclusively on the smart meter reading, somehow assuming it can't make a mistake, and holds customers to account. BC Hydro could be asking for far more trouble than the minor savings these meters provide are worth, in terms of disputes with customers. Once again I see that our Liberal government is prepared to ram through another legislation designed to help the corporate sector through its new Clean Energy Act, under the guise of being environmentally friendly. There is no optout clause in this Act for customers who may be sensitive to electromagnetic radiation through smart meters. That is like saying, "You'll take our pollution and like it whether you want it or not." That is hardly a "free market" economy, when there is no choice. I am prepared to discuss other options for saving energy, and already have a solar hot water system installed so as to cut energy costs between May-October. After description below of some background precipitating our interest in making this submission before the Committee, further below please find some suggested legislative amendment. Quite apart from one's view of the usefulness of "smart" metering and of landlord-tenant relations, the actual apparatus and system prevalent in Ontario has already proven dangerous to some, in regard to the recourse to radiofrequency for data transmission to and from the new meters. An ever increasing number of Ontarians are stricken with various degrees of what is commonly called 'electrosensitivity', some so severely as to be called 'electrohypersensitive'… Utilities deploying "smart" meters throughout Ontario rely on assurances that their radiofrequency emissions fall well within the bounds of existing federal standards. But as so many now consider these standards obsolete in reliance on one crude measure of biological effect, thermally-based, any presumed determination of safety there from is suspect… Since the aformentioned 2007 report, there has been very much more scholarly output attesting to the dangers of wireless. Very much material in more popular media has increasingly been published as well… Currently, at least two electricity providers in Ontario are known to offer to move meters away from where it is considered harmful by the consumer, except that a substantial fee (e.g. $1000) is exacted from the consumer. The consumer possibly if inadvertently harmed by "smart" meter methods, should not be required to pay to escape possible danger. Many methods of conveying even the currently required daily meter readings are imaginable, from visual reading (capacity for which meters are legislatively compelled to retain) and even automatic telephone reporting, to actual shifting of the meters to safer locations. Please note that one Swedish study tracking studies of electrosensitives since the 1980s, shows that a linear increase in the proportion of sufferers is on track to attain 50% of the population by 2017. This is a major developing problem utilities would do well, with government enablement and encouragement, to address well in advance of this projected possible avalanche of associated suffering. Stratford‟s Dangerous "Smart Meters"
The huge increase in radiation around Stratford caused by smart meters and city wide Wi Fi is a very serious long term danger to residents. The health of some people is likely to be severely compromised by exposure to the radiation. I have seen several of the meters and taken measurements near homes that have them, and I have found that strong radiation levels from smart meters are penetrating through house walls. They are exposing residents to dangerous electro magnetic pollution inside their homes. Of particular concern are homes where the meter is mounted on the same wall as a bedroom or a room where any occupant spends much time. Even more worrying are homes that have multiple meters mounted just outside living areas, such as some townhouses, some apartments and some multiple residence units. Having multiple meters can cause even higher radiation levels and more danger for the persons exposed. It appears that each meter transmits radiation at different strengths and at different time periods, depending on the distance the signal has to travel, the physical barriers between the meter and the collection point, and the number of meters using the meter as a stepping stone to pass their information along the line to the collection point. The only way that a person will know the strength and danger of the radiation is by having the home and property measured with a good quality radio frequency meter. Home yards and gardens have now become zones of strong pulsing microwave radiation. Children should be kept well away from playing near any smart meters. Even the radiation at a distance can be quite strong and potentially harmful. The smart meters that I have measured during the last two weeks have emitted strong radiation, pulsing on and off almost continuously. Recently, near Stratford, Ontario, I came across my first 'smart meter'. With my radio frequency meter, I found that the meter was sending out very strong pulses of microwave radiation every few seconds. This puzzled me, as to why so much radiation was being emitted. When I received the message below and also the story below that, I understood why this was happening. Hydro One meters throughout Ontario are repeating wireless information from each other and causing far more radiation than one could ever have imagined! Two types of smart meters
Dan and I thought all of you may be interested in knowing that there are two types of smart meters. The one that is being installed across Ontario that Dan and others are sensitive to and an other type, one that is hard wired to your phone system. Although to date we have not been granted an exemption, our local power company has agreed to install the hard wired non emf meter. They will pay for the meter and we are required to pay $50 per month for the dedicated Bell phone line for the meter. This is a solution that will enable us to live in our home and we will continue the battle regarding the exemption. I am certain that you feel as we do that we should not be forced to pay for the phone line however that issue needs to be resolved in a different forum. Kelly

My specific concern is that this piece of legislation, as written, apparently does not give homeowners the choice to opt out of using the proposed wireless meters, which are known to emit radiation that is unsafe. Citizens across North America are concerned about the increased electromagnetic pollution such wireless meters will generate, without regard to a person's age or health. The California Public Utilities Commission has been asked to mandate providing citizens with the ability to opt-out (refer http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/EFILE/A/116285.htm ) and included below is a letter from an Ontario resident which details the negative health effects from such wireless meters. My understanding is that the Clean Energy Act, intended to be passed this session, exempts smart meters from any public discussion and, if this is indeed the case, I think it's disgraceful. Stratford - Death by Smart Meter and Wi Fi
After receiving the information below and seeing the photograph which is attached, I went to the house in Stratford, Ontario, to see this dying shrub for myself. I was shocked at the amount of harm caused to the plant. I was able to see that the dying and sick leaves were much worse than the photograph shows. The smart meter had only been installed about two months ago yet there were several leaves that had completely withered up, as if they had been dried in place. Many other leaves showed signs of disease, with dozens of small dry spots spread across the leaves. The damage spread out for at least three feet from the smart meter. Leaves several feet away were very healthy, they were bright green with no signs of harm.
Another meter attached to the house next door was about eighteen feet away and many leaves on the tree, which were close to that meter, were changing colour. I measured the microwave radiation between the houses and it constantly spiked over two thousand microwatts per square metre. The radiation was almost continuous, one powerful spike after another. This City wide Wi Fi, smart meter system is very powerful, highly dangerous and must be stopped. Fighting this danger is part of my election platform in the Stratford Municipal Election. What are the Health Concerns of Smart Meters?
We are electromagnetic biochemical beings ourselves and our cells have evolved attuned to the planet‟s electromagnetic pulses, which occur normally between 11 and 13 hz (cycles per second). Our cells are affected by man-made electromagnetic radiation. San Diego Gas and Electric states their smart meters transmit at 900 MHZ (megahz), or 900 million cycles per second. Smart meters act as receivers and also as re-transmitters, carrying your neighbor‟s signals, to another repeater on utility poles. One house could be a repeater for 500 other homes. An apartment building could have an array of hundreds of meters, with an unknown cumulative amount of radio frequency radiation. Dear Committee Members Smart Meters that are being installed in Ontario, use strong microwave radiation signals to send information about energy use, to electricity providers. Microwave radiation has many adverse health effects at exposure levels which are a fraction of what the Federal Government says is safe. The Federal
Government bases their safety levels, simply on heating effects and they completely ignore biological effects on the brain, nervous system, DNA, blood and various other areas of the body. The smart meter systems (using microwave radiation) that are likely to be installed in apartments throughout Ontario are already obsolete and should not be considered for any future use. This is because of the health harm that may occur to persons who will be exposed to radiation from them. The danger posed by microwave radiation is well known and well researched. The adverse health effects have been known for many years. It would be irresponsible for the Ontario Government to force large numbers of the population to be exposed to microwave radiation. A comparison of the danger, may be spraying all apartments in Ontario with small amounts of dangerous poisons, irritants, harmful emissions and dangerous gasses. These poisons may not harm people in the short term, but over a long period of time they are likely to cause a large amount of significant harm to health. It is important for the Members of the Ontario Legislature and the members of this committee, to learn about the adverse health effects of microwave radiation, before this bill is considered and before a vote on the subject. The Government must not cause further environmental and health harm to the citizens of Ontario. Many of the modern diseases which are plaguing the world today have been scientifically linked to microwave radiation and other forms of electro magnetic radiation. Signals from apartment smart meters will not simply travel from the meter to the reception point, they are likely to travel on the electrical systems that circulate around apartment buildings and may harm the tenants by re-radiating inside the apartments. Yesterday I was visiting an apartment in Stratford where the electrical meters (previously installed when the building was new) were located in a room next to the apartment. If, all of these meters were changed to „smart meters‟ emitting microwave radiation, this apartment, and others nearby, may become unliveable. All humans are sensitive to electro magnetic radiation. The tremendous increase of electro magnetic radiation, because of wireless devices, is causing many people to become more sensitive and others are becoming electro hyper-sensitive. If the Ontario Government contributes to the amount of electrical pollution, it may be very difficult for some people in Ontario to live normal lives. Electro sensitivities, made worse by the Government installing smart meters may lead to huge legal claims against the Province. If many people develop significant illnesses because of exposure to electro magnetic radiation, the Provincial health system is likely to break down. Please do not under estimate the dangers posed by this new wireless pollution. The cost to implement smart meters to all apartment buildings around Ontario will be huge, with little likelihood of any major energy savings. In coming years, as more knowledge about the health effects of microwave radiation emerge, there is a real chance that all these new „Smart Meters‟ will have to be replaced with
„safe ones‟ again, at a huge cost. The government should not be experimenting with the health and safety of its citizens. Dear Mr. Watts, Further to our very interesting conversation several days ago about Smart Meters and EMF/RF, please see the link above from France about cows/disease/high voltage that we discussed as a horrible problem that has been plaguing farmers and their livestock in industrialized nations for decades. Finally, a French court has recognized this problem and has awarded damages. The toxic load of environmental pollution we all live in, which Hydro 1 unfortunately is now contributing to by forcing us all to live with the added burden of the radio frequency emissions of Smart Meters only exacerbates the ill health that we all find ourselves plagued with. Remember Canadian statistics presently for cancer are epidemic ... 1 in 2.5 women and 1 in 2.3 men (CBC Marketplace Wendy Mesley „Chasing the Cancer Answer‟ 2006). You stated that the Smart Meter will function on 2.4 gigahertz microwave and you seemed convinced that I should be comforted by that fact, especially since you assured me that it was as “safe as a baby monitor”. 2.4 GHz is the same frequency that blasts us from cell phones, cordless phones, WiFi computers and WLAN in our homes and schools. Now for a bit of a history lesson about the US Embassy in Moscow during the time period from 1953 to the 1970‟s into which the Russians beamed
microwaves at 2.4 GHz. Apparently 2 consecutive ambassadors died of cancer, another developed leukemia and bleeding eyes, 16 women developed breast cancer, while others suffered immune system disorders, high white blood cell counts, chromosomal breaks, chronic fatigue, blurred vision, etc.
You assured me that the criteria for the RF emissions of the Smart Meters is safe since it complies with Canada Safety Code 6; however, our Canadian standards have drastically lagged behind the rapid growth of this new wireless technology rendering it effectively obsolete to protect humans while creating an advantage for the telecommunications industry and now apparently for Hydro 1 as well. Adding a Smart Meter to every single home in Ontario while you claim it is „within standards‟ only adds to every single person‟s radiation burden in the province. The Russians apparently have microwave standards for public exposure that are 100 times more stringent that those in North America. I wonder why? Do I want a Smart Meter? Absolutely not. Do I want cancer. Not! Letter to BC Hydro
Dear Ms. Verschoor: I am writing to express my concerns regarding BC Hydro's plan to install 'smart' meters on every BC home. Although I applaud the effort to conserve energy and do as much conservation as I can, there are other issues at stake here. Namely, the fact that these meters use wireless transmitters, which rely on signals in the microwave spectrum similar to cell phones and WiFi computer systems. This band, between the 900 Mhz to 2.4 Ghz range, has been shown in numerous independent international studies to have effects on human health at power levels even below those commonly used to transmit these
signals. Our bodies rely on electrical signals to function; our cells, like any communication network, rely on them to repair and sustain themselves. Pulsed radiation from microwaves disrupts cellular communication in biological systems. Some scientific studies have shown that cellular damage is done by repeated exposure to microwave signals, including DNA strand breaks. While single strand DNA breaks can be repaired by the body, double strand breaks cannot, and become genetic mutation that is passed on to offspring. Aside from that, the experience with smart meters in California has not been encouraging. Citizens have complained of numerous health issues, including heart rate problems, high blood pressure, insomnia, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, etc. Part of the problem is that our civilization is currently layering one form of electromagnetically-powered device over another, so the effects are cumulative. By introducing yet another layer with smart meters, we are setting the stage for more widespread chronic illness and eventually cancers of various kinds. Even the recently released Interphone study, which has been largely discredited by reputable scientists, showed a 40% increase in certain types of brain tumours with heavy use of cell phones. In fact the rate is much higher according to studies whose methodology has been properly conducted, probably closer to a 200% higher incidence of tumours. The other issue in California has been that the smart meters apparently are not at all accurate and have resulted in numerous incidences of conflict between the utility company and clients who say they have been grossly overcharged. The utility then relies exclusively on the smart meter reading, somehow assuming it can't make a mistake, and holds customers to account. BC Hydro could be asking for far more trouble than the minor savings these meters provide are worth, in terms of disputes with customers. Once again I see that our Liberal government is prepared to ram through another legislation designed to help the corporate sector through its new Clean Energy Act, under the guise of being environmentally friendly. There is no optout clause in this Act for customers who may be sensitive to electromagnetic radiation through smart meters. That is like saying, "You'll take our pollution and like it whether you want it or not." That is hardly a "free market" economy, when there is no choice. I am prepared to discuss other options for saving energy, and already have a solar hot water system installed so as to cut energy costs between May-October. An ever increasing number of Ontarians are stricken with various degrees of what is commonly called 'electrosensitivity', some so severely as to be called 'electrohypersensitive'… Utilities deploying "smart" meters throughout Ontario rely on assurances that their radiofrequency emissions fall well within the bounds of existing federal standards. But as so many now consider these standards obsolete in reliance on one crude measure of biological effect, thermally-based, any presumed determination of safety there from is suspect… Since the aformentioned 2007 report, there has been very much more scholarly output attesting to the dangers of wireless. Very much material in more popular media has increasingly been published as well… Currently, at least two electricity providers in Ontario are known to offer to move meters away from where it is considered harmful by the consumer, except that a substantial fee (e.g. $1000) is exacted from the consumer. The consumer possibly if inadvertently harmed by "smart" meter methods, should not be required to pay to escape possible danger. Many methods of conveying even the currently required daily meter readings are imaginable, from visual reading (capacity for which meters are legislatively compelled to retain) and even automatic telephone reporting, to actual shifting of the meters to safer locations. Please note that one Swedish study tracking studies of electrosensitives since the 1980s, shows that a linear increase in the proportion of sufferers is on track to attain 50% of the population by 2017. This is a major developing problem utilities would do well, with government enablement and encouragement, to address well in advance of this projected possible avalanche of associated suffering.
