Social Networking

SOCIAL NETWORKING

The interaction between a group of people who share a common interest; Using social contacts to network; Using internet's network groups (such as Face book and Twitter) to network and communicate between consumers and businesses. This is where people develop networks of friends and associates. It forges and creates links between different people. Like social bookmarks a social network can form a key element of collaborating and networking. History: Early social networking on the World Wide Web began in the form of generalized online communities such as Theglobe.com (1994), Geocities (1994) and Tripod.com (1995). Many of these early communities focused on bringing people together to interact with each other through chat rooms, and encouraged users to share personal information and ideas via personal web space by providing easy-to-use publishing tools and free or inexpensive web space. Some communities - such as Classmates.com - took a different approach by simply having people link to each other via email addresses. In the late 1990s, user profiles became a central feature of social networking sites, allowing users to compile lists of "friends" and search for other users with similar interests. New social networking methods were developed by the end of the 1990s and many sites began to develop more advanced features for users to find and manage friends. This newer generation of social networking sites began to flourish with the emergence of Friendster in 2002, and soon became part of the Internet mainstream. Friendster was followed by MySpace and LinkedIn a year later, and finally, Bebo. Attesting to the rapid increase in social networking sites' popularity, by 2005, MySpace was reportedly getting more page views than Google. Facebook, launched in 2004, has since become the largest social networking site in the world. Today, it is estimated that there are now over 200 active sites using a wide variety of social networking models. The potential for computer networking to facilitate new forms of computermediated social interaction was suggested early on.[8] Efforts to support social networks via computer-mediated communication were made in many early online services, including Usenet, ARPANET, LISTSERV, and bulletin board services (BBS). Many prototypical features of social networking sites were also present in online services such as America Online, Prodigy, and CompuServe.

IMPACTS: Web based social network services make it possible to connect people who share interests and activities across political, economic, and geographic borders. Through e-mail and instant messaging, online communities are created where a gift economy and reciprocal altruism are encouraged through cooperation. Information is particularly suited to gift economy, as information is a nontrivial good and can be gifted at practically no cost. Facebook and other social networking tools are increasingly the object of scholarly research. Scholars in many fields have begun to investigate the impact of social networking sites, investigating how such sites may play into issues of identity, privacy, social capital, youth culture, and education Several websites are beginning to tap into the power of the social networking model for philanthropy. Such models provide a means for connecting otherwise fragmented industries and small organizations without the resources to reach a broader audience with interested users. Social networks are providing a different way for individuals to communicate digitally. These communities of hypertexts allow for the sharing of information and ideas, an old concept placed in a digital environment. Typical structure Social network analysis views social relationships in terms of network theory consisting of nodes and ties (also called edges, links, or connections). Nodes are the individual actors within the networks, and ties are the relationships between the actors. The resulting graphbased structures are often very complex. There can be many kinds of ties between the nodes. Research in a number of academic fields has shown that social networks operate on many levels, from families up to the level of nations, and play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals. In its simplest form, a social network is a map of specified ties, such as friendship, between the nodes being studied. The nodes to which an individual is thus connected are the social contacts of that individual. The network can also be used to measure social capital – the value that an individual gets from the social network. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines.

Basics Social networking sites tend to share some conventional features. Most often, individual users are encouraged to create profiles containing various information about themselves. Users can often upload pictures of themselves to their profiles, post blog entries for others to read, search for other users with similar interests, and compile and share lists of contacts. In addition, user profiles often have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users. To protect user privacy, social networks usually have controls that allow users to choose who can view their profile, contact them, add them to their list of contacts, and so on. In recent years, it has also become common for a wide variety of organizations to create profiles to advertise products and services. Additional features Some social networks have additional features, such as the ability to create groups that share common interests or affiliations, upload or stream live videos, and hold discussions in forums. Geosocial networking co-opts internet mapping services to organize user participation around geographic features and their attributes. Lately, mobile social networking has become popular.[citation needed] In most mobile communities, mobile phone users can now create their own profiles, make friends, participate in chat rooms, create chat rooms, hold private conversations, share photos and videos, and share blogs by using their mobile phone. Some companies provide wireless services which allow their customers to build their own mobile community and brand it, but one of the most popular wireless services for social networking. 1. Educational Application: The National School Boards Association reports that almost 60 percent of students who use social networking talk about education topics online and, surprisingly, more than 50 percent talk specifically about schoolwork. Yet the vast majority of school districts have stringent rules against nearly all forms of social networking during the school day — even though students and parents report few problem behaviors online.

4

Social networks focused on supporting relationships between teachers and their students are now used for learning, educator professional development, and content sharing. Ning for teachers, Learn Central,[60] TeachStreet and other sites are being built to foster relationships that include educational blogs, portfolios, formal and ad hoc communities, as well as communication such as chats, discussion threads, and synchronous forums. These sites also have content sharing and rating features. 2. Access to Information: Many social networking services, such as Facebook, provide the user with a choice of who can view their profile. This prevents unauthorized users from accessing their information. Parents who want to access their child's MySpace or Facebook account have become a big problem for teenagers who do not want their profile seen by their parents. By making their profile private, teens can select who may see their page, allowing only people added as "friends" to view their profile and preventing unwanted parents from viewing it. Teens are constantly trying to create a structural barrier between their private life and their parents. To edit information on a certain social networking service account, the social networking sites require you to login or provide an access code. This prevents unauthorized users from adding, changing, or removing personal information, pictures, or other data.ss 3.Medical applications Social networks are beginning to be adopted by healthcare professionals as a means to manage institutional knowledge, disseminate peer to peer knowledge and to highlight individual physicians and institutions. The advantage of using a dedicated medical social networking site is that all the members are screened against the state licensing board list of practitioners. The role of social networks is especially of interest to pharmaceutical companies who spend approximately "32 percent of their marketing dollars" attempting to influence the opinion leaders of social networksA new trend is emerging with social networks created to help its members with various physical and mental ailments. For people suffering from life altering diseases, can

consult with doctors to get information and cure through social networking. In developed countries some websites offer its members the chance to connect with others dealing with similar issues and research patient data related to their condition. For alcoholics and addicts, SoberCircle gives people in recovery the ability to communicate with one another and strengthen their recovery through the encouragement of others who can relate to their situation. DailyStrength is also a website that offers support groups for a wide array of topics and conditions, including the support topics offered by PatientsLikeMe and SoberCircle. SparkPeople offers community and social networking tools for peer support during weight loss.

4. MOBILE Mobile social networking is social networking where one or more individuals of similar interests or commonalities, conversing and connecting with one another using the mobile phone. Much like web based social networking, mobile social networking occurs in virtual communities. A current trend for Internet social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook is to turn mobile. In parallel, native mobile social networks have been created like Foursquare and Gowalla. Initially, there were two basic types of mobile social networks. While mobile web evolved from proprietary mobile technologies and networks to full mobile access to the internet, the distinction has changed to the following two types: the first is web based social networks being extended for mobile access through mobile browsers and smartphone apps, the second type is native mobile social networks with dedicated focus on mobile use like mobile communication, location-based services, augmented reality requiring mobile devices and technology. Advances in hardware and software technology have facilitated the existence of these mobile virtual communities. Industry wireless network technologies include SMS, WAP, Java, BREW and i-mode. Previous focus on wireless network technologies and functionalities has been extended to multimedia and satellite navigation by new and improved technologies like camera and GPS integrated in mobile devices. Combination of these 3 areas of technology in Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 extended the focus of mobile social networks to new areas, functionalities and technologies.

5. Entertainment: Entertain through social networking is a great way to meet new people for friendship, romance, contacts, or just to chat to pass the time. Like a virtual cocktail party that always draws a great crowd, social networking gives you the opportunity to interact with other members in real time, using your computer. Through social networking download free software and in minutes we can browse pictures, profiles and personals of other members. From social networking we can get powerful entertainment features and online dating. Talk to anyone we think looks interesting with the best chat and instant messaging anywhere.

Popularity of social networking site:
The past decade has been defined in part by social networking and the proliferation of multiple social networking options. This is probably because social networks are open-ended and easy to use. Once we‘ve set up a social network account and entered some basic profile information, we can basically sit back and let the social networking activity come to us. Social bookmarking is an even more refined version of social networking that lets users share specific links and news articles to their friends and other members of the site.

Starting with social networking:
Social networking is about making ‗friends‘ — some friends we already know may be a member of a social networking site, meaning we‘ve got some built in social networks already. Once we branch out beyond our close friends who also use whatever social networking site we use, we can find new friends by joining groups or look for other people with similar interests in order to build our social network. Members of social networking share information in their profiles (location, basic interests, political leanings, religion, sexuality, etc) but we can also learn about a person based on the size of their network, the people in their network, their blog posts, links, etc. This has led to some ―spying‖ on the part of people interested in learning about an old friend, old flame, or potential new employee. This is why proper privacy settings are important when we get involved with social networking.

Reason for using social networking:
There‘s a high entertainment factor with social networking. Combine that with the ―social‖ function of networking, and the ability to find news and links relevant to our interests, and social

networking can be a way to make the Internet work harder for us. It‘s a good way to meet people with similar interests, and lots of small business owners, artists, actors, musicians and the like have used social networking to advance their careers. It has made our world closer. Our work is easy to do with the help of social networking. Reducing our cost, time and effort are the major quality of social networking.

Selection of social networking sites:
To select a networking site we will determine what social network we use. For example — use the social networking service Yahoo to help you find movies and news and links about the film industry. Music lovers join sites like Guruji.com, Last.FM, and others to find new and familiar musicians to add to their collection. Another way to pick a social networking site — by type. If we‘re between the ages of 15 and 20 we will most likely use Facebook. If we‘re between 21 and 25, G-mail and Yahoo mail is our domain.

The most glaring disadvantage of social networking sites is the risk of identity theft and fraud. The personal information of users can be used by dubious people for illegal activities. Information like the e-mail address, name, location, and age can be used to commit online crimes. Also, many people pretend to be someone else and prepare their online profiles with false information, so as to dupe unsuspecting users.
