Social Networking: A Part of Everyday Life

We are living in a modern era. With the evolution of technology and communication,
information can be retrieved just at our fingertips. Everywhere we go we can grasp information
we seek with the use computer, mobile phones and other gadgets.
Social networking was introduced to us through the exploitation of the internet by its
users. It can be defined as a collective term of people connecting to each other to exchange
information with the use of the internet. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter are used as a
media for social networking.
At present, billions of people are engaged in social networking. Some of these people
could be your friends, your brothers and sisters, your parents, cousins or you yourself. They use
social networking as an instrument for them to communicate with who they want to even they
are at overseas. Several people may even open their account on social networking sites after
waking up and before they go sleep.
With very minimal regulations on the internet, there is no doubt that lots of people are
free to do anything they want to. Thus, social networking could be an advantage or disadvantage
to some. Business advertising for example is being utilized through social networking. People
are using it for them to earn money. To some, they use it as a tool to fight for their cause and
announce it so that people may know about it. Example can be about environmental problems
such as mining in Palawan or about the earthballing of trees found at SM Baguio. Much more,
criticisms are widely spreading all over social networking sites. We could take the situation of a
motorist who insulted a Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) public officer. Just this
month of November a video more known as “AMALAYER” went viral when a passenger of a
Light Railway Transit (LRT) mocked and humiliated a female security guard. Up to know they
are being bullied in networking sites. As year 2013 is fast approaching, we may presume that
people running for the elections will also use social networking sites to boost their election votes.
When the Anti-Cyber Crime Law was enacted this year, criticisms proliferate all over the
internet. Many Filipinos having an account in a social networking site said that it was
unconstitutional because it would prohibit them from “Freedom of Speech”. That libel which
was included in the law had an unusual and horrifying penalty for those who will commit it.
Thus, several petitions were filed which also led the court to order a Temporary Restraining
Order (TRO).
With some facts mentioned, social networking has been integrated in our life. We may
choose or not to let it revolve around us. It would still depend on us to regulate our networking
activities in such a way that it would not undesirably and negatively affect us.
