Even tho ugh there may be arguments in favo r o f inco rpo ratio n o f smart co atings acro ss the secto r, making the case fo r them can be difficult given the extreme co st-pressures that the PV market is facing. Ho wever, there are two key areas where the co st sensitivity is less severe, and these applicatio ns will be key markets o f entry fo r smart co atings in PV. These areas are BIPV ana flexible pro ducts, Do th o r which are so la as vaiue-acmea pro ducts and are thus mo re acco mmo dating to co stly new layers in their structures. Flexible PV: As no ted abo ve, flexible PV is an impo rtant addressable market because selfrepairing co ating systems co uld enable the fabricatio n o f PV encapsulatio n films with unco mpro mised barrier perfo rmance, even in enviro nments where scratches and damage o ccur. In fact, flexible PV represents the o nly significant PV market fo r self-repairing smart co atings; mo st co st-effective self-repairing techno lo gies are either no t co mpatible with the glass panes used to encao sulate rigid PV pro ducts, o r the added value o f self-repairing glass to Flexibility is expected to be mo st impo rtant in the OPV, DSC, and CIGS PV markets. We anticipate that the o ppo rtunities will be the greatest in PV techno lo gies that need the lo ngest lifetimes, which skews the greatest o ppo rtunity fo r self-repairing co atings to ward flexible BIPV. BIPV: In general, BIPV applicatio ns stand to be mo re impo rtant to smart co atings in PV than any o ther sub-secto r. In particular, BIPV applicatio ns, in additio n to benefiting fro m self-cleaning co atings to impro ve basic perfo rmance, also can be a so rt o f “playgro und”fo r putting expensive new co atings and functio nalities to the co mmercial test. And because BIPV pro ducts co mbine bo th architectural and PV features, the co st o f the added PV is o ften no t precisely kno wn. In o ther wo rds, BIPV pro ducts co mpete o n fo rm and functio n mo re than o n price, so they can abso rb (o r hide) the co st o f the expensive smart

fo rm and functio n mo re than o n price, so they can abso rb (o r hide) the co st o f the expensive smart co atings used in them. Tags BIPV glass and smart windo ws: Furthermo re, because BIPV glass is at least partially transparent, it also can serve as a windo w, skylight, etc., and that makes it a candidate to add smart windo w functio nality, namely so me type o f o n-demand o r auto matic switchability o r dimmability to the mix. BIPV glass is the best type o f pro duct to take advantage o f a co mbinatio n with smart windo w techno lo gy, no t o nly because it is transparent but also because it is already a very high-value pro duct. Thus, BIPV glass with electro chro mic functio nality is the largest PV-related o ppo rtunity fo r electro chro mic smart co atings. An extensio n o f the idea o f co mbining smart windo ws with BIPV glass is to add still mo re functio nality to the mix—perhaps OLED lighting o r display pro ducts. There are o ther lo ng-term o ppo rtunities, to o . Altho ugh the BIPV market is easily the largest addressable market fo r multifunctio nal pro ducts, it is no t the o nly o ne. The gro wth o f TFPV, OPV, and flexible PV has given rise to newer, no n-traditio nal po rtable applicatio ns in which co st-per-watt characteristics are o f seco ndary impo rtance. PV co mbined with po rtable and mo bile electro nics and display pro ducts like tablets and pho nes enable lo nger usable pro duct lifetimes by adding battery self-charging o r “trickle-charging” capability. These pro ducts are so ld o n functio n and co nvenience, o ften at high margins. Such pro ducts may pro vide a way fo r PV firms to create distinctive co mpetitive advantages in the PV marketplace. Thus, the values are heavily dependent upo n o ur PV market fo recasts, which are info rmed by several assumptio ns: mo dest o verall PV market gro wth with stro nger gro wth in the flexible PV and BIPV sub-secto rs; sluggish yet po sitive glo bal eco no mic ; and relatively high but no t strato spheric carbo n-based fuel co sts. As we no ted abo ve, we believe that a special o ppo rtunity exists fo r suppliers o f smart co atings in the BIPV space. Fo r o ne thing, the high value o f BIPV pro ducts—and the muddled line between the co st o f the architectural materials and the functio ns like PV within them—makes it easy to abso rb the co st o f new co mpo nents and functio nality. In additio n, so me building o wners and new PV ado pters are likely to take the threat o f high maintenance requirements and co sts serio usly when co nsidering the co st and installatio n o f PV. This viewpo int is so mewhat in co ntrast to utility-scale custo mers, who —while still serio us—are mo re likely to already have such maintenance systems in place o r in the plans.
