Squirrel Prevention – Is your house a squirrel Condo?
As a squirrel removal specialist I evict squirrels from hundreds of homes each year. This allows me to see first hand how these crafty critters manage to enter homes/attics and also why they seek out certain types of houses and buildings. If you’ve had squirrels in your ceilings, walls or attic before there is probably a very specific reason as to why they chose your home. This article will go into the reasons why squirrels are attracted to certain homes and give you tips on removing the conditions that make your home attractive to these furry little vermin!

Are you attracting squirrels?
Are you unknowingly attracting squirrels to your property? Trash Barrels – it’s a fact that urban squirrels eat trash. Squirrels are opportunistic feeders and will eat all types of trash. Leaving your trashcans un-secured will allow squirrels to dine on your trash and keep them coming back for more. Keep the lids on your garbage cans tight and use bungee cords to prevent the covers from being knocked off. Gutters – The gutters on your home act as a catch basin for leaves and even acorns and nuts. Homes that are surrounded by oak trees often have gutters full of acorns. This creates a buffet-like scenario for squirrels and will certainly lure them to your home. Clean your gutters 2-3 times each year to prevent this from happening. Bird Feeders - Bird feeders will often attract squirrels and mice to your yard. The more squirrels in your backyard and near your home the more likely it is that you will have them damage your home. Squirrels are attracted to bird feeding stations due to the seeds that fall to the ground below the feeder. Use specialty feeders that don’t allow the seed to fall to the ground or place them far away from the house.

Easy Access
The number one factor that makes a house prone to squirrel infestations is access. The following conditions make it very easy for squirrels to access your roof. Overhanging Tree-Limbs – Squirrels can jump as far as 16 feet from a branch to land on your roof. Trim all tree branches back to prevent this from happening. Keep in mind that even the branches that are well above you roof should be trimmed, as squirrels will jump from great heights of up to 20 feet to land on your roof. Bushes – Bushes that grow around the perimeter of one-story homes (such as ranches) allow squirrels to climb the bushes and jump onto the roof. Keep these bushes trimmed to a height that is 4 feet below the roofline. This will prevent squirrel from jumping from the top limbs of the bushes onto your roof.

Yearly Maintenance
In order for a squirrel to chew its way into your attic it needs a vulnerable area or a weak spot to start chewing. These areas are usually slightly rotted areas on the corners of the house, older attic vents and roof junctions. To prevent squirrels from using these area you should replace rotted wood in these areas and screen your attic vents. Follow the tips listed here and you’ll be able to prevent a squirrel infestation in your home and attic!
