EPILEPSY - OVERVIEW
Epilepsy is complex, varied and widely
misunderstood and if not monitored and treated,
it can have a devastating impact on the lives of
people living with the condition and their families.

-Dyscognitive Focal Seizures, which alter awareness
and result in purposeless movements.

Doctors generally classify epilepsy seizures as
either focal, if they affect only part of the brain
or generalised, if the whole brain is affected and
consciousness is lost.

- Atonic Seizures cause loss of muscle tone and
sudden collapse

There is a wide range of seizure symptoms that can
occur in epilepsy.
FOCAL SEIZURES:
- Simple Focal Seizures, which may alter emotions,
or change the way things look, smell, feel, taste or
sound and may result in involuntary jerking of a leg
or arm.

GENERALIZED SEIZURES: :

- Absence seizures are characterized by a brief loss
of awareness and subtle body movement.
- Tonic Seizures cause stiffening of muscles in the
back, arms or legs and may cause a fall.
- Clonic Seizures are associated with rhythmic,
jerking muscle movements.
- Tonic-Clonic Seizures – grand mal seizures are
characterized by a loss of consciousness, body
stiffening and shaking.

EPILEPSY SOLUTIONS
Possum offer several epilepsy detection solutions in the UK which can be configured to raise alarms
to care phones and paging systems.

USER’S PARENTS

A unique epilepsy sensor which detects tonic-clonic seizures. It can be worn
comfortably day and night around the wrist as a watch and increases user confidence
and quality of life.
As it is worn on the person, it is much more accurate and flexible than the current
bed based solutions; false alarms are dramatically reduced meaning peace of mind
for both the user and carer.
Using very precise measurements of movement, the sensor is able to recognise the
difference between epileptic and natural movements reducing false alarms. The
product is available in several versions – the standard solution (to work with Possum
products), a sensor compatible with other manufacturers’ products and the next
generation Smart phone version, which provides an absolute mobile solution.
