BY MARK GRIFFIN Contributing Writer The 2012 Biggest Week in American Birding Festival is quickly approaching. The third annual event, which was hosted by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory near Oak Harbor last year, has moved its headquarters to the Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center for this year’s May 4-13 event. “We have some new programs, some new field trips this year,” BSBO Executive Director Kim Kaufman said. “We are partnering with Sandusky County Parks and offering several birding trips by canoe. We’re going to canoe areas of Green Creek in Sandusky County. One of the park staff and one of our research team, Tom Kashmer, will be leading the paddlers.” The canoe trip is just one of many events that will take place at this year’s 10-day celebration. “Maumee Bay State Park Lodge is the perfect venue for the registration of the festival,” MBSP Lodge Manager Patrick Czarny said. “We offer beautiful views, expansive display space, abundant parking and, most of all, we are close to our own boardwalk and popular birding areas inside of the park.” Czarny said the lodge will open at 5:30 a.m. for breakfast so visitors can prepare for an early start to their activities. The BSBO will use several areas of the lodge and grounds for the many seminars and events that will be held during the festival. In addition to the Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center, the 2012 birding festival will be co-hosted by visitor’s bureaus from Destination Toledo, Lucas Country, and Lake

Tell Tales

Remember Bataan
Thanks to Irene Minier who sent us a letter this week with a reminder that April 9 was the 70th Anniversary of the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in the early days of World War II. We have long documented the heroics of the men of the 192nd Tank Battalion, Company C, all of whom were from Ottawa County. They mustered from the Armory on West Perry Street and marched to the train station in November of 1941. Only about half of them made it home. The last living member of Company C, Joe Hrupcho, died just last year. Once again, we honor these brave men who either died in defense of their county or suffered horrific captivity at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army. It all took place 70 years ago this week.

Another letter we received this week came from Ida Mercurio, one of our area’s favorite and most friendly bartenders. She has been plying her craft at Nagoya the past several years, and is remaining with Mel and Barb Ayers in an administrative capacity. They will have a special farewell party for Ida at Nagoya on Monday, April 23. So it won’t be “Goodbye Ida” but rather “See you on the other side of the bar!!!”

Sound Off
Never forget
This spring marks the 70th anniversary of the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. On Dec. 7, 1941, the world was shocked by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and mere hours later the Japanese bombed Manila, Guam, Wake and other sites in the Pacific forcing the United States and her allies to declare war on Japan. While the Japanese invaded the Philippine Islands a small force of Americans in the Philippines were forced to defend the country with scarce food and medicine, antiquated weapons, and little hope of reinforcement. Most of the American planes available were destroyed at Clark Field on December 8th and the defense forces were concentrated on the Bataan peninsula and on the island of Corregidor in Manila Harbor. Rations had been cut in half in the beginning of January and again in March and there was little quinine left to stave of the malaria that was rampant. Starvation and disease were factors as lethal as the Japanese reinforcements. Against overwhelming odds, the troops on Bataan help out until April 9, 1942 when they were forced to surrender. The men on Bataan were made to walk more than 65 miles in sweltering heat and little or no food, water or reset. Those who faltered were beheaded or bayoneted in what has become known as the Bataan Death March. Under terrific air and artillery bombardment the island of Corregidor held out until May 6, 1942. Today it is only fitting to remember the sacrifice of these American military men of the Army, Navy, Marines and Army Air Corps. Most of them were subsequently held as POWs for three and a half years under the most brutal conditions. The majority of the men were taken to Japan and uses as slave labor in mines, smelters, and factories. With every day that passes, there are fewer of these American heroes among us. The men who endured these atrocities are now in their late eighties and nineties and it is appropriate to take time to remember and express our gratitude for the sacrifices that they made as young men. Remember Bataan and Corregidor … April 9, 1942, and May 6, 1942. To my dear customers,
After almost 28 years as a bartender on Catawba Island, Marblehead and Port Clinton, I have exciting news to share! But first I want to say thank you to all of my loyal customers and friends … it has been an honor to serve each and every one of you. From Mercurio’s and Nate’s to Mel’s Crows Nest and Nagoya, your loyal patronage has meant so much to me. And so it is with great pride that I hang up my bartender hat to help my Nagoya family working directly for Barb in an administrative role. I hope you will all stop by and see me at Nagoya through April 23 to celebrate my new endeavor. This is not a goodbye, it is a “see you on the other side of the bar.” Love, Ida Mercurio

Terrific Kids
In cooperation with the Port Clinton Kiwanis Club, Port Clinton City Schools recognizes outstanding elementary students as “Terrific Kids.” The following have been honored as Terrific Kids in March 2012: • Jefferson Elementary — Haley Harris, Conner Ambrozy, DeVonte Bates, Gabrielle Dorreman, Spencer Spieldenner, Dillon Ringeisen, Braeden George, Isabellah Craig, Cassidy Stroupe, Marissa Pollard, Alexis Runyon, Brycetyn Hedden, Carli Laurel, Jaxon Martinez, Leanna Thomas, Devon Brown, Caitlyn Prentice, Matthew Peacock, Nikolas Skoufos and Mallory Holbrook • Bataan Memorial Elementary — Kyra Meads, Joshua Oliver, Camyrn Weaver, Leeland Kinnison, Clarissa Corona, Sarah Borton, Grace Smothers, Paige Smothers, Elisha Kriner, Addisynne Siefke, Makaila Webb, Chassity Williams, Anthony Aukerman, Mia Kuzma, Devin Appleman, Rebeckah Nehls, Paige Zibert and Katerina Fillmore. that serves as a valuable tool for diversity outreach programs in the desert southwest and northern Mexico. The 2012 event will feature guided bus trips with the festival’s partner, Black Swamp Conservancy. The bus trips will visit Black Swamp Conservancy lands. “We’re going all over the place,” said Kaufman, who added that nearly 64,000 people came to Ottawa and Lucas counties last year. Bird viewing locations will include Maumee Bay State Park, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Kelleys Island, East Harbor State Park, the BSBO, the Magee Marsh Boardwalk, Meadowbrook Marsh, Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area, Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, and Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve. Kaufman said she expects as many as 65,000-70,000 birders in Northwest Ohio this year. Holding the festival at Maumee Bay State Park will offer more space for birders than the BSBO, according to Kaufman. Kaufman estimated that birdwatchers could bring as much as $30 million into the local economy. There are nearly 2.4 million birders throughout the state. Kaufman said birders can expect to see more than 230 species of birds this year, including warblers, vireos, brushes, shorebirds, and water fowl. For more information call 419-898-4070 or visit www.biggestweekinamericanbirding.com.

BIRD from 1A
Erie Shores and Islands in Ottawa County. Kaufman said conservation is the heart of The Biggest Week In American Birding event. “For Black Swamp Bird Observatory and our partners, the effort we put forth on the festival is worth it because the event raises awareness and appreciation for birds and habitat conservation in a major way,” she said. “Habitat conservation is a big deal. Without habitat, we don’t have habitat for birds and we don’t have birders. If the birders don’t come, we don’t have a festival. “All of it is connected to the quality of this region. We’re proud to feature Oak Openings Preserve. We’re doing trips there nearly every day of the festival. They will be led by the super talented Elliot Tramer, a former University of Toledo professor and one of our BSBO board members. He’s one of the area’s leading experts on Oak Openings.” In 2011, The Biggest Week helped raise more than $20,000 for local bird research, education and conservation in Northwest Ohio. The festival also raised funds to purchase 200 copies of Guia de Campo Kaufman: A Los Aves Norteamerica, a Spanish-language bird guide

Coaching burnout
to be a positive influence in a child’s life. With all the desire people have to be in this profession, we should not be lacking for coaches in the many youth leagues in this country. But we are. Schools and recreational programs are often desperate for help. It is becoming difficult to keep coaches active for more than a few years. The reasons they give for stopping are most likely, “It’s no fun anymore” or “It’s not worth the hassle.” Why? Most troubling; why are some of the best ones burning out? There are some universal reasons. One is the pressure to win and win big. People tend to judge coaches strictly on their won/loss record. Good coaches know that there is a lot more to working with kids than the scoreboard results, but it’s a constant fight to keep the intangibles important. A coach’s every move is analyzed and discussed and criticized. His or her good intentions are not enough to satisfy critics. Putting the whistle around your neck puts a bull’s-eye on your back. People’s expectations are very high and there is not much tolerance for mistakes. In many sports, the season has stretched into a year round job. A coach’s own family life is challenged by the commitment. Parental interference is a big issue. Parents want the best for their kids — not an unreasonable thing. However, when the “best” is at the expense of another player, it becomes a problem for the coach. Lack of playing time is the most prevalent complaint. There are many other issues and I’m sure readers can identify additional ones. The situation can become unsettling to the entire team family, especially if it becomes contentious. Some parents feel entitled to aggressively approach the coach to get things changed to their satisfaction. It’s not unusual to read about coaches being physically attacked or verbally assaulted by angry parents. Groups of parents take sides. Letters are written. Angry meetings are held. Demands are made of administrators. The team performance becomes a victim to the conflict. The coach’s focus changes from coaching to defending themselves against criticism. Another frustration is working with athletes who are hard to motivate or are unresponsive to coaching. There can be a lack of commitment to working hard or staying eligible. Kids today have a myriad of activities they believe takes precedence over a practice, but they do not understand that missing a practice has a consequence personally and to the team. Some expect that just showing up is enough or don’t care whether they win or lose. An “I don’t care attitude” is tough to change. Burnout has become an epidemic and we need to take action. Too much pressure and unrealistic expectations are the main culprits. Let’s get our priorities in order. Support the kids and coaches. Let them play.
nnn

In today’s climate of overemphasis on winning, burnout of kids and coaches is at an epidemic level. “Burnout” happens when a person has so much stress from working too long and too hard under too much pressure that they give up doing the job entirely. It is no longer worth the cost to the person’s mental, emotional and physical health. I’ve written a lot about the risk to kids. Today, let’s look at coaches. Most of the coaches I know are caring people who truly desire to help kids succeed in sports. Many were athletes themselves and want to continue participating in a sport they love. Coaches in youth sports often are volunteers or receive a salary that doesn’t begin to approach minimum wage if one counts all the hours they put in. Certainly, it is not the money that motivates them. They dream of helping kids learn to love a sport and play it well. Being called, “Coach” is a term of respect. Most men and women in the profession devote a big part of their day to helping kids and are glad to do so. Their expectations are that coaching will be fun and rewarding. It’s a huge commitment, but it can be a great experience

It pays to put time on your side
If you’re relatively young, and you’ve been investing only a few years, you possess an asset that is invaluable and cannot be replaced: time. And the more time you spend contributing to taxadvantaged investments, the better off you may be. As an investor, time is your ally for two reasons. First, the more time you give your growth-oriented investments, the greater their potential. And second, the effects of market volatility have tended to decrease over time, though as you no doubt have heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Clearly, it pays to put time on your side. And when you’re investing in taxadvantaged vehicles, time becomes an even more critical component of investment success, especially when you are young and have several decades ahead of you before you retire. Suppose, for example, that you put $200 per month into an investment on which you paid taxes every year. If you earned a hypothetical 7% return on this investment, you’d end up with about $324,000 after 40 years. But if you put that same $200 per month into a taxdeferred investment, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you earned that same 7% return, you’d wind up with about $513,000 after 40 years. Of course, once you starting taking withdrawals, presumably when you’re retired, you’ll have to pay taxes on your earnings, so your after-tax accumulation would be about $385,000, assuming you took your IRA in a lump sum (which most people don’t) and also assuming you were in the 25% tax bracket. However, by the time you retire, you may be in a lower bracket. Plus, you have some control over how much you withdraw each year, so you may be able to affect the taxes you’ll pay. Furthermore, depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible in the years in which you make the contributions. (Keep in mind that this hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only and does not represent a specific investment or investment strategy.) While tax deferral is obviously a nice feature for an investment, tax-free may be even better. If you meet the income requirements, you might want to consider investing in a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings withdrawals, provided you’ve held your account for at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. This means that, in the above example, you’d have accumulated that same $513,000 — but you won’t have to pay taxes on your withdrawals. Generally speaking, the Roth IRA may make more financial sense for those who are eligible, but if you think you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, and your income level permits you to deduct some of your contributions, you may want to consider a traditional IRA. Consult with your tax advisor for guidance on the most appropriate approach for your situation. When it comes to building resources for retirement, it’s almost impossible to save and invest “too much.” So take full advantage of both time and tax-advantaged investments. By putting these investments to work for you, and by keeping them at work, you’ll be putting time on your side as you work toward your financial goals.

Local Realtors earn honors
Jeff Morgan and Alex Johnson Morgan of Real Living Morgan Realty Group in Port Clinton were awarded the highest level of service achievement in the real estate industry, Quality Service Certified Platinum. The award is in recognition of earning 100 percent client service satisfaction in 2011, as measured by Leading Research Corporation. Quality Service Certified status is the only award in the real estate industry based on independently validated, measurable service results. Clients of QSC agents receive a customer satisfaction survey at the end of each transaction. The surveys are administered and the results are compiled by LRC. Client feedback from the surveys becomes part of the agent’s credentials. An overall satisfaction rating is displayed on a consumer website — www.QualityService.org — where sellers and buyers have the ability to select a real estate professional based upon each agent’s validated record of service satisfaction. “Nothing is more important to a prospective client in selecting a professional than the service results achieved with past clients,” says Larry Romito, president and CEO of QSC. “Consumers have greater confidence in service reliability, results and satisfaction with a Quality Service Certified real estate professional because they know that the agent’s service record has been validated by an independent third party.”
