Veteran of the Year
Harold “Harry” Fillmore was honored as Ottawa County Veteran of the Year for 2011 at a celebration in his honor last week at the VFW Post 8732, Oak Harbor. Fillmore is the first veteran in Ottawa County to receive this honor. The Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission selected Fillmore after reviewing several nominations. His his 58 years selfless service as a veterans advocate speaks volumes to his commitment to the veterans in Ottawa County. “Harry served our country with honor when our country needed him. Upon discharge, he continued to faithfully serve in the civilian sector. He inspired, mentored and befriended many veterans, to include myself,” said De Ann M. Louk, Executive Director, Ottawa County Veterans Service Office. “He has stood the watch for almost 60 years for our veterans. As the first veteran to receive this award, he certainly set the bar high for those to follow.” Fillmore joined the United States Navy on Sept. 4, 1943. He was honorably discharged on March 2, 1946, after successfully attaining the rank of Seaman First Class and awarded the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal

BLESSING OF THE FLEET

Father John Missler from Immaculate Conception Church in Port Clinton was on hand last week at the City Docks for the Blessing of the Fleet. Members of the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security and Port Clinton Police and Fire departments brought boats out for the annual blessing.

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher Home sales activity reached its highest level since 2008, according to a release from the Ohio Association of Realtors. All aspects of home sales in the area represented by the Firelands Association of Realtors (Erie, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca and Huron counties) showed significant gains for the month of March based on OAR statistics. The local area boasted a 33.3 percent gain on the number of units sold in March of 2012 compared to March of 2011, going from 155 units sold last year to 207 this past March. The average home sale price also jumped by 11.7 percent from $97,000 to over $108,000, making the combined dollar volume increase solid 49 percent jump over last March. The March sales only served to make the first quarter numbers also look very good. The number of units sold jumped nearly 19 percent compared to the same period last year while the average sale price also picked up by almost 6 percent. Combined, the total dollar volume of housing sales jumped from $37.5 million in 2011 to more than $47 million in 2012. “Activity in March was substantial and we’ve now posted nine consecutive monthly sales gains, dating back to July 2011,” said OAR President Robert Miller. “We’re extremely hopeful that the housing sector will continue to make progress throughout 2012 and build upon the solid foundation that has been established.” Locally, Cindy Bolte of Bolte Real Estate and Insurance reported similar success in the first quarter of 2012. “My numbers are substantially higher first quarter of 12 over first quarter of 11 … not

Tell Tales

Week brings sad losses for Ottawa County
We had some very sad losses this past week. First, Port Clinton Yacht Club has lost two of its Past Commodores: Kells Pugh and Bill Benedict. Both were absolutely outstanding gentlemen. Geoff Bailey told me a story about Kells and Joan Pugh, about how when they first joined PCYC, they were singled out for a warm welcome, a greeting whose memory has lasted through the years. Their daughter Jan is the owner of Packer Creek Pottery in Genoa whose artistic items have become famous throughout the world. Bill Benedict was one of the first people my father came to know when we moved to Catawba in 1962. He helped with the remodeling of our home.

Also, I want to send my condolences to Al and Carol Riznikove and family of Port Clinton. We are sadly carrying the obituary for their son, Sean, who was only 41. Port Clinton has no two finer people than Al and Carol. My prayers are with them.

I have been asked by “Meatball Mark” Giaco to straighten out a miscommunication in our item about the Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner last week. The sauce was from Marconi’s in Huron, not a Giaco special family recipe. What was a special family recipe were the “meatballs”… thus, the new nickname for my longtime friend and Kiwanian.

Congrats
Congratulations to Rosemary Rose and our wonderful children’s staff for winning the Ohio Library Council’s Outstanding Program award for the Let’s Pretend Series at the Ida Rupp Public Library. Let’s Pretend is an interactive program for 3-, 4- and 5-year-old pre-kindergarten children focusing on imaginative play. The first part of the program features stories and songs for a child without a caregiver. Caregivers and siblings are then invited to join in for imaginative play. The new Every Child Ready to Read program from PLA and ALSC added an emphasis on play to promote early literacy skills; therefore, we wanted to provide an opportunity for kids to participate in imaginative play with their families. Each month a theme is chosen, and using recyclable materials such as boxes, milk cartons and packing materials along with the creative skills of our staff, our community room transforms into an art studio or a campground or an apple farm. Because we use mostly the free materials, the cost is around $25 per program. The program takes place twice in one day to accommodate as many children as possible. Themes created in 2011 include Art Studio, Camping, All Around Town, Apple Farm and Firefighters. The program starts with a 20- to 25-minute story time for the children that includes books, songs and finger plays about the theme followed by free play time with parents and siblings who are welcomed into the program after the story time. For example, the Apple Farm program included picking apples, washing apples, “cutting” apples and making apple turnovers-all using pretend play. Pretend apple turnovers were created with felt, glitter as cinnamon and sugar and foam apples and then cooked in our “oven” made of boxes. Children were then able to taste a real apple turnover. Attendance is between 30-50 people including parents and siblings. Each family leaves with information on Every Child Ready to Read, finger plays and rhymes, book suggestions, activities to do at home along with ideas on how to recreate the pretend play adventure at home. Each program receives many thanks from caregivers and requests for more. The program is planned by Rose Mary Rose, a youth services staff member with more than 30 years of library experience working with children. The entire youth services staff helps wherever necessary from making props, preparing information for parents and setting and cleaning up the community room. We are very proud of our staff for receiving this Give a Shout Outstanding Program award. Deborah Loiacono, Director Ida Rupp Public Library

Sold-out audience learns ‘Bridges out of Poverty’
A sold-out crowd packed the Port Clinton Elks Club Friday, April 20, to learn important concepts around the culture of poverty. Jodi Pfarr, international trainer for Aha! Process, enlightened those in the audience with strategies and tools for recognizing the “mental model” of poverty. These “mental models,” an internal awareness of how the world works, exist without our awareness and determine how we act. By recognizing these models, we can start to work toward building a sustainable community. Pfarr explained how to recognize the core differences between poverty, middle class and wealth. The workshop focused on economic diversity, not racial or cultural diversity. In order to build a sustainable community, all three economic classes must be at the table willing to work together to achieve success. Representatives from five different counties attended the workshop. “The work started here today will continue as a coalition will be formed from participants to further the process of ‘Bridges out of Poverty.,’” said Cheryl Seigley, Specialized Dockets Coordinator of the Juvenile Court. This workshop was sponsored by the Ottawa County Juvenile Court and received support from Ottawa County CASA, The Harry Stensen Memorial Fund, Ottawa County Department of Job and Family Services, United Way of Ottawa County and WSOS Community Action Commission.

Bagels and the Bible
Firelands Presbyterian holds study sessions Wednesdays at Common Grounds
All are invited to Firelands Presbyterian Church’s Wednesday morning Bible studies at 10 at the Common Grounds coffee shop in the Sutton Center. A group of members and friends have begun meeting there for coffee, sweets, conversation and an informal Bible study led by Firelands Pastor Jeanne Gay. Rev. Gay. “It’s good to get outside the church building sometimes, to remember that faith doesn’t happen just on Sunday mornings,” said Gay. “And sometimes it’s easier for people to relate the scripture to their everyday life when they’re in an everyday setting.” The group met last year, June through November, and then took a hiatus through the winter. “We’re looking forward to getting together again,” said Firelands member Karen Coffin. “Pastor Jeanne is a gifted teacher. It’s great fun to study together in the relaxed atmosphere of Common Grounds, where questions and conversation flow easily.” Gay said the group will study texts from the upcoming Sunday’s lectionary (a three-year listing of scriptures used by many churches). Participants may want to look the passages over beforehand, but many come with no preparation at all. Any are welcome any Wednesday morning.

Missy speaks and writes about topics of aging and faith, and reaches out to older adults, especially “those who may need a dose of spiritual encouragement.” Her latest book is “My Story, My Song,” which she co-authored with Lucimarian Roberts and her daughter, Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America.” This book includes stories and reflections on the pivotal moments of Lucimarian’s life, as well as Robin’s reflections on her mother’s stories. Missy’s other books, “Living with Purpose in a Worn-Out Body: Spiritual Encouragement for Older Adults,” “Talking with God in Old Age: Meditations and Psalms,” “Don’t Write My Obituary Just Yet: Inspiring Faith Stories for Older Adults,” and “Aging Faithfully: 28 Days of Prayer,” are top sellers for Upper Room Books. Otterbein ranks No. 1
Otterbein North Shore, with a 98.65 percent approval rating, ranked No. 1 of all of Ohio’s 957 nursing communities, according to the Ohio Department of Aging’s Resident Satisfaction survey findings released earlier this month. In accordance with Ohio State law (Revised Code section 173.47), the Ohio Department of Aging conducts biennial Resident Satisfaction Surveys at licensed and/ or certified long-term care facilities. The Resident survey results and the Long-Term Care Consumer Guide provide information about nursing homes and assisted living facilities to help consumers, family members and professionals search for the appropriate facility to meet an individual’s needs. Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices is pleased to report of the 957 facilities evaluated: • Otterbein’s North Shore Lifestyle Community in Lakeside-Marblehead is rated the number 1 facility in the state • Three Otterbein locations are rated in the top 15 facilities throughout the state. • The average satisfaction rating for all 10 Otterbein locations is over 93 percent, and a full 7 percent above the state-wide average; and a score that exceeds the scores of 92 percent of the individual participating facilities. • 100 percent of Otterbein’s 10 statewide locations exceeded the overall quality incentive threshold, as defined by the state of Ohio. Jill Hreben, President/CEO of Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices is thrilled with the results, and offered “sincere congratulations to all Otterbein partners (employees) for yielding outstanding results and focusing on Otterbein’s most important priority — the lives of the elders we serve. The recent ODA quality results serve as reinforcement that Otterbein continues to make outstanding progress toward our mission — In keeping with our United Methodist traditions, we seek to enhance the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons”. Hreben went on to say, “I’m particularly thrilled with the performance of Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices in regard to resident’s opinions on the choice they have when in the care of an Otterbein community. Otterbein locations averaged nearly 95 percent satisfaction rating with the life choices Otterbein provides. The rating is almost 8 percent above the industry average – proof our strategic goal of liberating elders and those who serve them from the mindset of institutional care is working, and supportive of our belief everyone is entitled to a lifestyle of their own choosing, no matter what care and services are needed!” Lisa Hart, Assistant Executive Director, notes, “We have provided exceptional care for 15 years and are thrilled that recent improvements such as our innovative Jane Baker House are being recognized.” For information regarding Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices, visit www.otterbein.org or call 513-933-5400.

Terra presents ‘A Choral Celebration’ in PC
Join the Terra Choral Society as they present “A Choral Celebration!” Experience three centuries of choral favorites in 60 minutes, from Baroque to Gospel. The program includes selections by composers such as Handel, Verdi, Bruckner and Moses Hogan, as well timeless songs such as “O Danny Boy,” “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “This Little Light of Mine.” Vocal faculty instructor Joan Eckermann (soprano) will join the Choral Society in a performance of the “Easter Scene and Prayer” from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana and again on the classic spiritual “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel.” Whether you enjoy traditional choral classics or new contemporary chorus literature, there is something here for you. The Terra Choral Society is under the direction of Michael Shirtz and accompanied by Jane Beckley. The Terra Choral Society originated as a small campus chorus in 2000 with 20 community members and students. Growing along with the college’s music programs, the chorus officially became the Terra Choral Society in 2006. Today it is a non-profit performance ensemble that serves as the community/student chorus-inresidence at Terra State Community College in Fremont. Comprised of more than 100 student and community singers across five counties in Northwest Ohio, membership ranges from high school students to adults. TCS is often accompanied by the college’s Chamber Arts Orchestra and collaborates annually in performances with regional arts organizations and schools. The chorus has performed with such artists as Joyce Carolyn, C. Andrew Blosser and Elizabeth Von Trapp. Since 2002, TCS has performed masterworks by Faure, Brahms, Mozart and Handel, tribute concerts to Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, the Stage & Screen and annual largescale productions paying tribute to America’s Veterans. In May TCS will be performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the nation’s Memorial Day Choral Festival. The mission of TCS is to promote cultural enrichment through choral music, with educational

and performance opportunities for college students and community singers. A Choral Celebration will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Port Clinton Performing Arts Center, 821 Jefferson St., Port Clinton. The concert is presented again

4 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., Fremont. Terra’s Choral Leadership and Distinguished Service in the Arts Award will be presented during Sunday’s concert. These concerts are free and open to the public.

Even with low rates, invest for income
Not long ago, the Federal Reserve announced that it plans to keep short-term interest rates near zero until late 2014. The Fed initially pushed rates to that level in 2008, in an effort to stimulate economic growth. Clearly, low interest rates have a wide-ranging impact — but what effect will they have on you, as an individual investor? If you need income from your in- GARY COON vestments, then the continuation of ultra-low interest rates may be a matter of some concern, particularly if you own certain types of fixed-income investments, such as certificates of deposit. While CDs are insured, offer return of principal at maturity and provide regular interest payments, they are not risk-free. With low interest rates, you risk losing purchasing power. Still, fixed-rate vehicles may well have a place in your portfolio. If you’re even somewhat dependent on your investments for income, you may need to broaden your search. Here are a few ideas to consider: • Build a bond ladder. Long-term bonds, by their nature, are more subject to interest rate risk than shorter-term vehicles. In other words, interest rates are more likely to rise during the life span of a longer-term bond — and when rates go up, the prices of existing bonds will fall. To help lower this risk, you may want to build a “ladder” of bonds of varying maturities. Then, if market interest rates are low, you’ll still have your long-term bonds earning higher rates, but if rates rise, you can take advantage of them by reinvesting the proceeds of your maturing short-term bonds. But remember to work with your financial advisor to evaluate whether a bond ladder and the securities held within it are consistent with your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances. • Dividend-paying stocks. You can find companies that have paid dividends for many consecutive years — and in some cases, increased their dividend payout each year. In 2012, companies listed in the S&P 500 are on track to pay out more than $252 billion in dividends, a record amount, according to data compiled from Standard & Poor’s. (Keep in mind that the S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and is not available for direct investment.) Of course, stock prices will fluctuate in value, and you may receive more or less than your original investment when you sell. • Refinance your mortgage. Today’s low rates are good news for borrowers. With tougher standards in place, it may not be as easy to refinance a mortgage as it once was, but if you qualify, you may want to think about refinancing. You may be able to save quite a bit of money on your monthly payments — and lower payments can translate into a greater cash flow. Ultimately, an extended period of low interest rates is just one more factor to consider in creating and adjusting your investment strategy. Work with your financial advisor to help ensure low rates won’t affect your income.
