Utah County Selects Global Spectrum For Convention Center

Rugby Championships Returning To PPL Park After Successful Event

T

he Utah County Commission has selected Global Spectrum to manage their new Utah County Convention Center in Provo, UT. Global Spectrum named Danny Wheeler as the venue’s General Manager. Wheeler formerly was Assistant General Manager at the St. Charles Convention Center in St. Charles, MO.

Global Spectrum will be handling the day-to-day operations of the center, which is now under construction, as well as performing pre-opening management duties. Scheduled for completion in June 2012, County officials hope that the three-story, 120,000-sq. ft. convention center will capture a significant portion of the state’s convention business when it opens. The center’s proximity to many of Utah’s popular ski resorts should be a selling point to potential clients. Frontier Airlines recently committed to scheduling flights to the Provo airport. 

SA Sevens, NBC and Global Spectrum, operators of PPL Park, have announced that the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) will return to PPL Park in Chester in 2012, based on the success of this year’s inaugural event, which concluded June 5. The announcement was made during NBC-TV’s live network broadcast of the CRC. “We are building a truly national event in the Collegiate Rugby Championship and can’t imagine better hosts than the Philadelphia region and PPL Park,” said Jonathan First, president of USA Sevens. “We’ll see you in Chester, PA, in 2012.”

“Based on the overwhelming support of sports fans throughout the greater Philadelphia region, we are excited to bring the Collegiate Rugby Championship

back to PPL Park again next spring,” said Jon Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports and VERSUS. “PPL Park is a spectacular facility. Global Spectrum, who manages PPL Park, has been incredibly supportive in the production, execution, and marketing of this highly successful tournament. The city of Chester, and particularly Mayor Wendell N. Butler, have been wonderful to our student athletes, our fans, and our partners. The Philadelphia region and rugby are the perfect combination, as we have clearly laid the foundation for future successes of this event right here at PPL Park.” (Continued on page 11)

INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVES

Ticket Industry Leaders Offer Glimpse Into Technology’s Future

uring challenging times, innovation, technology, and creativity allow us all to excel. As we look at the entertainment industry, we are excited to see all of the innovation that has taken place along with new technologies developed to enable venues to better manage ticketing, marketing, and fundraising needs. From the rapid evolution of social media and new consumer marketing programs to managing fan relationships with CRM tools, we see new opportunities daily through technology.

didn’t purchase. By placing a cookie on the fan’s computer, fans are then served targeted online advertisements the next time they browse the Internet. The Philadelphia 76ers, for example, ran a retargeting campaign in March for three weeks, promoting family packages, and spent merely $100 to generate over $11,000 in ticket sales, of which $2,600 was incremental. This technology helps sell tickets with a dramatic return on investment.

Social media is a ubiquitous phenomenon that continues to grow in importance for venues, especially when marketing to the under-30 fan demographic. FanOne Marketing and Paciolan are bringing exciting new programs to teams and venues to engage fans through Facebook. The Philadelphia Flyers, for example, have been thought leaders and early adopters of these new social media technologies. A great example of their success is the use of Facebook ‘FanGating’ technology, which requires fans to ‘like’ the Flyers Facebook page to gain access to exclusive offers and content. Through FanGating, the Flyers grew the number of Facebook fans by over 160,000 in just three months, taking them from ninth place in the NHL to fourth in total Facebook fans. The next big step in social media will be integration of Facebook sharing into the ticketing pages, which will allow fans to RSVP to events on Facebook and invite their friends to join them at the game both during and after they purchase tickets. All of this is done through customized Facebook Connect, without ever leaving the ticketing page. Industry data shows that for every Facebook share, it nets an average of $5 in ticket sales. We think this represents an exciting opportunity for all types of venues. Another exciting development in the area of consumer marketing is retargeting online advertising. This process effectively targets fans that browsed for tickets on a website but

FanOne Marketing also offers robust technology through powerful email, database marketing, and marketing automation tools to help sell tickets, engage fans, and nurture leads. Personalized landing pages tailored to each season ticket holder are just a few of the power tools that come with the Fan One Marketing solution. Social media, retargeting, and search marketing services were featured along with Fan One email marketing tools at the Global Spectrum marketing conference in South Carolina, led by Bob Schwartz, Mark DiMaurizio, and a talented team of regional Marketing Directors. New Era Tickets and Paciolan are also partnering to roll out an integrated CRM solution that allows teams and venues to sell season tickets, track opportunities, and manage service cases (e.g., broken seats) to better communicate with fans. These powerful tools represent incredible revenue-generating opportunities, especially in the area of group sales, up-selling to packages and season tickets, and season renewals. From a ticketing perspective, there are several other exciting features on the horizon, including mobile ticketing that works on all mobile devices, enhancements that simplify the demand-based pricing process, and adding flexibility to stored value ticket programs. We’re excited to be part of the ComcastSpectacor family of companies and look forward to a bright future of innovation. 

Global Spectrum Europe Consulting In France On Planned New Arena G
lobal Spectrum Europe (GSE), a collaboration between Global Spectrum and NEC, of Birmingham, England, has been named consultant for the newest entry in the modernization of European arenas, the Lyon/Villeurbanne Arena in France, which is projected to open in 2014. The privately-financed arena, being built on public land, will host the professional basketball games of ASVEL Basket LyonVilleurbanne, which is owned by Gones and Sports, which also owns Societe de Projet Salle Multifoction (SPSM), S.A.S., the entity developing the arena. Mich Sauers, Senior Vice President of Business Development for Comcast-Spectacor, parent company to Global Spectrum, said this is GSE’s first foray into Europe apart from NEC-managed venues, and it is the first modern, state-of-the-art arena being built in France. When U.S.-based shows like WWE and Feld Entertainment go to France, they play 5,000-6,000-seat Zenith facilities, arenas that were built by the French government years ago. “Most cities have one,” Sauers said. “This new arena will be an alternative for some of the touring shows and, in speaking with potential tenants, the response has been very positive. France is the second largest market in Europe for WWE,” Sauers noted. “All the shows do well there.”

IAVMF Honors Kim Bedier With Ray Ward Award
Global Spectrum’s Kim Bedier, CFE, General Manager of the Comcast Arena at Everett (WA), was presented with the Ray W. Ward Award. The award is given by the Regents of the Venue Management School at Oglebay, which began 24 years ago with the generous support of the International Association of Venue Managers Foundation (IAVMF). Regents Chair Russ Simons, CFE, Senior Principal with Populous, made the announcement. The honor is awarded by the Board of Regents to recognize an individual associated with the school whose dedicated service and extraordinary Kim Bedier contributions over a period of at least six years have resulted in significant and long-lasting improvements to the overall success and quality of the school. The award was created and initially presented to Ward in August 1996. “Kim Bedier embodies the high service standard recognized by the Ray W. Ward Award,” said Simons. “Kim has tirelessly dedicated herself to making those around her better. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our industry and its people, both in education and leadership. I am one of the people who has been inspired by her energy and enthusiasm.” “Global Spectrum is dedicated to giving back and helping grow our industry and one of the ways in which we do that is through our commitment to IAVM,” said Global Spectrum Chief Operating Officer John Page. “Kim Bedier’s personal contributions to IAVM have been the model for all facility managers within our industry. On behalf of Global Spectrum, we are particularly proud of Kim and her on-going commitment to IAVM. She is very deserving of this honor.” Bedier said, “I hold Ray Ward and all the other recipients of this award in such high regard; I continue to learn so much from them and all the students I have had the privilege to meet through my years at VMS at Oglebay.” Venues Today previously recognized Bedier with a “Women of Influence” award. She is a member of the IAVM Board of Directors and its executive committee, and is a former chair of the VMS Board of Regents. 

Marshall Glickman, Principal of G2 Strategies, is senior advisor to SPSM, and anticipates the agreement with Global Spectrum will turn into a long-term management deal when the arena opens. Glickman noted that they interviewed several companies for a management deal and settled on Global Spectrum Europe because “this company is the right company. We like the collaboration they have with NEC. We like the guys that are based here – people in Amsterdam and in Birmingham in the U.K. They are an ideal service provider. They are more than happy to do business with anybody. “We feel that one of the advantages of Global is that they are not in the business of owning content, but they are in the business of working with all content providers,” Glickman said. The arena will be designed to host a wide range of events, including ice hockey, concerts, family shows, and international sporting events. The venue is planned to have four levels, including two public concourses and a club level for business hospitality. GSE will handle all bookings for the facility and will leverage its relationships throughout the entertainment industry to bring top-notch entertainment to the area of Lyon. 

Record Setting Opening Season At Spring Training

ajor League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies began their 2011 spring training year in a new, state-of-the-art ballpark complex called the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick near Scottsdale, AZ. Ovations is proud to operate the food service program at this multipurpose facility that features an 11,000-seat capacity ballpark, 12 practice fields, and multiple office buildings with major and minor league clubhouses, training facilities, and offices for each team. Major League and Cactus League records were set both financially and for attendance during spring training this season. Thirteen of 17 D-backs games at Salt River Fields were sellouts, with a sold-out crowd of 12,514 for the inaugural game against the Colorado Rockies on February 26, which ranks as the second-largest home crowd in the organization’s spring training history.

The Rockies also experienced amazing crowds, with sellouts in 12 of their 16 home games played at the new Salt River Fields. Ovations is thrilled to be feeding all these hungry fans. The food service program is spectacular and truly on a major league level with specialty concepts that tell the story of the team, community, and baseball. “The design and culinary capabilities of this ballpark really demonstrate the passion Ovations put into this project,” said Todd Wickner, Ovations Chief Operating Officer. “This opening was a game changer for Major League Baseball spring training.” In order to further the “uniqueness” of the ballpark, Ovations worked in collaboration with the community, teams, and architects in designing the ballpark to create custom food service concepts for the park. 

Philadelphia Union Fan Loyalty Program
New Era Tickets, in conjunction with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS), has implemented a tightly integrated customer loyalty program, providing the team complete visibility into their customers’ buying and attendance habits, in particular the frequency of visits and spending patterns. When integrated with transaction systems, such as ticketing, merchandise, venue access, and food and beverage sales, it will now be possible to establish a clearer picture of how a fan engages with the team. It will track when they enter the stadium, how much they spend on food and merchandise, and what concession stands they frequent. The system includes RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) season ticket holder cards that replace tickets. 

Four Venues Renew Management Contracts With Global Spectrum
Four diverse public assembly venues – a convention center, performing arts center, and two arenas – recently extended their management contracts with Global Spectrum. The buildings with new extensions are the Miami Beach Convention Center, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Liacouras Center, and the Glens Falls Civic Center. The 502,000-sq. ft. Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, FL, has renewed its agreement for two more years. “The unanimous approval from the City of Miami Beach Finance Committee and the Convention Center Advisory Board to enter negotiations for a contract extension is a true testament to the hard-working, dedicated staff under the leadership of our General Manager Bob Balsam,” said John Page, Global Spectrum’s Chief Operating Officer. “Global Spectrum is extremely pleased with the relationship we have fostered in the City of Miami Beach, and we look forward to continuing to be a strong and valued partner of this community for many more years to come.” “The City of Miami Beach awarded Global Spectrum a contract to manage its Convention Center because they believed we would improve sales, management, and the bottom line,” said Frank Russo, Global Spectrum’s Senior Vice President of Business Development and Client Relations. “We delivered with across-the-board improvements in every phase of the operation, including the sale of new business, reducing indirect operating expenses by over $1 million in our first year over the previous management, developing an international sales component and, much more successfully, integrating the MBCC into the local community.” The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach, VA, also extended its management contract with Global Spectrum. The 1,300-seat theater has recently hosted many of the top performers in pop, classic, and country music, as well as performances by the Virginia Symphony and Symphonicity, presentations of the Virginia Arts Festival, and discussions as part of the Virginia Beach Forum. In the arena category, the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia has renewed its agreement. The 10,000-seat arena is home court for the Temple University Owls varsity men’s and women’s basketball teams. The NCAA Women’s Regional Basketball Playoffs were held there recently. The 6,500seat capacity arena hosts sporting events, concerts, and family entertainment of all types. Under Global Spectrum management, gross revenue increased from $1.9 million in 2008, the company’s first year, to $4.77 million in 2010, a 151 percent increase. 

Flyers, 76ers Visit Global Venues For Preseason Games
Comcast-Spectacor’s two major league teams, the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, will play preseason games next season at two Global Spectrum-managed facilities. The 76ers will face the Boston Celtics at the Mullins Center on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Amherst on October 19, and the New Jersey Nets at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ, on October 13. The Flyers will play the Detroit Red Wings at the John Labatt Centre in London, ON, on September 22. “It’s exciting for us to be able to bring the 76ers to the Mullins Center and Sun National Bank Center and the Flyers to the John Labatt Centre this season, as we enjoy being able to showcase our two professional teams each year at some of the venues we manage,” said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko, a 1981 UMass Sport Management graduate. “Personally, for me, this is a thrill to be back on the campus of my alma mater, UMass, where we, as a company, can help give back to the school by providing valuable on-site educational experiences for interns and students affiliated with the sports management program here at UMass.” “We are excited to bring the Detroit Red Wings to London and are looking forward to welcoming back the Flyers to the John Labatt Centre,” said Brian Ohl, Global Spectrum Facility Management’s Regional Vice President and General Manager of the John Labatt Centre. “London has a growing number of Philadelphia Flyers fans, and when they face a team with the regional popularity of the Red Wings this fall, people will be in for a great night of hockey.” 

One of the cornerstones of this development was the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Leading the redevelopment project with “The Ted” created a destination to attract visitors (including prospective students) to the University.

Robert L. Fenning

We made bold operational plans that included an aspirational goal of 120 – 130 events per year—quite a challenge for a mid-sized market with a number of competing, existing municipal arenas and amphitheaters. In addition, we knew that the requirements for effective marketing, promotion, and event management were beyond the capabilities of our in-house staff, yet we wanted the management team to make ODU Athletics and all University events “THE TENANT.” Now 10 years later, the Ted anchors the University Village, a 67-acre development with in excess of $300 million in private and public investment. The Ted has become one of the highest grossing entertainment venues between 6,000 and 10,000 seats in the world, and yet our athletic teams and University event staff cannot say enough good things about the priority, care, and support they receive from Global Spectrum. Our Global Spectrum team truly understands the special needs of a University-owned venue of this type, and has delivered world-class entertainment in an extraordinary, well-run facility. Today’s Ted remains sparkling new in appearance, represents the preferred event venue for the region, and is clearly seen as ODU’s and the University Village’s “crown jewel.” While other companies can do some of these functions well, Global Spectrum can do them all well. We cannot sing the praises of Global Spectrum and the contributions of Doug Higgons, Mike Fryling, and the rest of the Global Spectrum staff enough, for they consistently meet and exceed our significant expectations. 

Overland Park Center Aids Japan Relief
A five-day donation drive at the Global Spectrum-managed Overland Park Convention Center, Overland Park, KS, in cooperation with Heart to Heart International, resulted in the collection of 324 Care Kits for medical aid for Japan relief efforts. “We are overwhelmed at the response. We thought we would get a few donations here and there, but we had schools donating full care kits, local dental offices bringing multiple boxes of toothpaste and brushes, hotels dropping off shampoos and soaps,” said Brett Mitchell, General Manager of the Overland Park Convention Center. “Local families, and the community as a whole, really stepped up and showed up. It was great.” Global Spectrum encouraged the community to donate a few everyday items that would then be prepared for “Care Kits” and sent to Japan from Heart to Heart’s global distribution center in Kansas City. Every item in the Heart to Heart Care Kit was used to bring comfort, health, and peace of mind to those who received it. Greater Richmond Convention Center Gets Greener
The Greater Richmond Convention Center (GRCC) in Richmond, VA, recently purchased two environmentally important products that expanded its green initiatives. The Bulb Eater is a machine that crushes spent fluorescent lamps of any length into 100-percent recyclable material, while capturing over 99.99 percent of the vapors released. The container can hold up to 1,350 four-foot fluorescent lamps. The unit features a side-mounted dust filter that works in conjunction with an activated carbon filter that captures and neutralizes the mercury vapor released from the lamps during crushing. In addition, the building purchased the new Ionater EXP, a cleaning agent that eliminates cleaning chemicals by transforming tap water into a powerful sanitizer. Cleaning with the Ionater instead of traditional cleaning chemicals reduces energy consumption and pollution formation between 97 and 100 percent across seven key indicators of sustainability. The product also kills more than 99.99 percent of common bacteria and leaves no chemical residues behind. The GRCC was certified Virginia Green by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2008 and is continuously looking for new green initiatives to put in place at the center. 

Others include Ronald McDonald House, American Lung Association, Central Iowa Shelter and Services, Variety Club of Iowa, and American Cancer Society. 

Through an agreement with Polk County, Global Spectrum is committed to participating in a minimum of five community events per year. During the first four months of 2011, that number had grown to over 50 organizations, which benefited through nonprofit programs and book, blood, and clothing drives. “Volunteer work not only helps to bring our organization together as a team, but also gives us a satisfaction of knowing we have made a difference to residents throughout Des Moines,” stated Chris Connolly, Global Spectrum’s General Manager of the Iowa Events Center. 

Penticton Campus Events Picking Up Steam for Season
Global Spectrum’s management of the South Okanagan Events Centre and three other facilities on the British Columbia city’s venue campus is accelerating activities to increase events and provide greater date support for the Penticton Vees hockey team of the British Columbia Hockey League. SOEC General Manager Dean Clarke said Global Spectrum’s top priority is focusing on the SOEC’s main tenant, the Penticton Vees. “Last year Vees dates were given equal opportunity with other events. I believe they need preferential treatment,” he said. Clarke said there will be more BCL games on Fridays and Saturdays next season. “I think it will make it easy for fans to come to the games,” he said. Global Spectrum is also refining the manner in which events are booked, purchased, and accounted for, concentrating on sports tourism and country music events. A new partnership to co-promote concerts with the Cressman Sakamoto Agency is in its infancy. It is hoped that the new arrangement will bring more acts to Penticton with less risk to the city’s bottom line and make it easier to draw larger audiences to the facility and the community. Clarke is predicting a strong number of events for the summer, fall, and winter. 

Mr. Mark Anderson Director of Operations AutoZone Park Memphis, TN Dear Mark: I just wanted to pass along a note of praise for the girls up on the deck in section 214. I came to the ballpark with my three daughters - ages 1, 4, and 6 - last night. As you can imagine, I had my hands full! The women that were working in that section were incredibly hospitable and help ful. These women helped make my daughters feel at hom e with their pleasant smiles and welcoming word s. They even went so far as to carry drinks from the deck down to the place where we were sitting. They truly made my girls’ first experience at a Redbirds game a great one. I’ve been to a few of the parks at the major league level, and I can safely say that never before have I experienced such a high level of customer service as I did last night. Thanks to you and your team for a wonderful night at AutoZone Park! Craig Gyergyo Hope Church Children’s Ministry Director

FACILITY NEWS
“How You Growin’?” Mentoring Program Begins At All Global Spectrum Venues
To fuel its remarkable growth as a company and maintain its industry leadership in innovative facility management, Global Spectrum is reinforcing its belief that the company’s greatest asset is its people. Many employees within Global Spectrum have already benefited both personally and professionally from the guidance of a mentor. Research in the workplace indicates that employees are more likely to succeed if they have a healthy and active mentor relationship. To further support that belief, Global Spectrum is initiating the “How You Growin’?” Mentoring Program this summer at all of its facilities. “The purpose of the HYG Mentoring Program is to provide a meaningful and ongoing oneon-one interaction between new team members and more seasoned team members who have a track record of success,” said Neil McMullin, Assistant General Manager of the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, OH, and Chair of the “How You Growin’?” Mentoring Committee. “The interaction between mentor and mentee will help the less experienced team member gain practical insights and perspectives on career development within the organization, while getting an insider’s view on the company to build confidence and leadership skills. Mentors will also benefit by making a positive contribution and investment in the future success of Global Spectrum. We feel that a mentor is an intrinsic part of nurturing our people and developing the quality for which we are known,” he added. Last fall, the “How You Growin’?” Mentoring Committee conducted a four-month trial of the program with results being not only highly successful, but also informative. The test phase was conducted in six Global Spectrum buildings: the John Labatt Centre, Constant Convocation Center, Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island, Iowa Events Center, Duke Energy Convention Center, and Century Center. In all, 15 relationships were created among volunteers from these six buildings. Tennille Wanner, Sales Manager for the Duke Energy Convention Center, participated in the trial phase as a mentee. “What I found most valuable about the program was being able to speak candidly about my future with Global Spectrum and having someone to help me identify the areas in which I need to improve or gain experience in order to excel in my career,” she said. “I am fortunate to come from a facility where I have a lot of support from my peers, however, to hear additional perspectives from other leaders within the company is a great added benefit, and the HYG program helped me to achieve that.” Applications for participation in the program will be available on the “How You Growin’?” website (howyougrowin.com) and more information regarding the formal program launch will be sent to each facility General Manager to distribute to all employees. 

Harlem Globetrotters Honor Five Global Spectrum-Managed Venues For Record-Setting Tour Dates
The Harlem Globetrotters have recognized five Global Spectrum-managed venues for breaking turnstile records during the team’s 2011 “4 Times the Fun” North American Tour, which wrapped up on April 17, with a custom-made Spalding “Money Ball.” The Globetrotters presented three different types of awards: a platinum ball for setting a record at the box office for three consecutive seasons; a gold ball for setting a record at the box office for back-toback seasons; and a red, white, and blue ball for first-time record breakers. The James Brown Arena in Augusta, GA, received a platinum ball, while the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA, received a gold ball. The Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in Indiana, PA; Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ; and the Fargodome in Fargo, ND, all received red, white, and blue balls. “Global Spectrum prides itself in exceeding our clients’ expectations,” said John Page, Global Spectrum Chief Operating Officer. “This type of accolade by the Globetrotters is a reflection of the hard-working, dedicated marketers we have at all of our venues who collectively work together as a single marketing department to the benefit of all of our venues nationwide.” The Harlem Globetrotters featured their own version of the “Money Ball” throughout the tour, with the addition of an exciting new innovation, the first four-point shot in basketball history. Every Globetrotters game featured four designated four-point circles (two on each side of midcourt), each located 35 feet from the basket (12 feet beyond the NBA’s three-point arc). 

Livestrong Sporting Park To Host Farm Aid #26
The 26th annual Farm Aid benefit concert for independent farmers and ranchers this year will be held at the Global Spectrum-managed Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS. It will be the first concert at the new stadium and is expected to seat about 22,000 fans. The day-long concert on August 13 will feature Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and others. “I’m looking forward to bringing my friends together in Kansas for the first time to honor family farmers,” Nelson said. “Farm Aid celebrates the independent family farmers and ranchers who make this country strong, and we know we can only fix the challenges our country faces with the know-how of family farmers.” Farm Aid was started in 1985 and has raised more than $39 million. 
