“The Journey”. It’s a must-watch movie. A feel-good Malaysian movie. Everybody has been
raving about this movie. So my friend and I decided to watch the movie last week. “The
Journey” managed to capture many elements such as touching family and societal motifs
themes love, forgiveness, estrangement, friendship, communication as well as traditions. The plot
of the story is essentially in Chinese but it was done with a genuine Malaysian flavor and
settings. There were also many delightful views of Malaysian life, over past 50 years ago and it
was told in flashbacks and the present. The movie shows more about diversity, more about
traditions such as “delivering the wedding invitation in person” and “by not attending a funeral
before their daughter’s wedding” because it was bad sign. Besides, I love watching the movie
which was displayed in various types of Chinese tradition in it. For example, the “worship of sky
scene” during Chinese New Year. There were also long lasting friendship element in this movie.
Example, Uncle Chuan has a bunch of good friends from primary school and they were all
bestfriends for 50 years. “The Journey” had taught us that love relating to one another can be
complicated. Throught out the movie, Uncle Chuan never said “I love you” to Bee but he did
showed his own affection to her in his own ways. Just because Uncle Chuan is not voicing out
his affection, Bee thought that he did not love her. Well that’s how the story goes.
“The Journey” is a delightful unique story that can make our eyes red and nose stuffy. The
main characters are Ben Andrew Pfeifer (as Benji), Frankie Lee Sai Peng (as Uncle Chuan),
Joanne Yew Hong Im ( as Bee) and the director of this movie is Chiu Keng Guan. In this movie,
wonderful and beautiful sights of our that got displayed such as Cameron Highlands, Chew
Jetty(Penang) Manukan Island(Sabah) Bailing(Kedah) and Ipoh(Perak). “The Journey” movie started
off with a non-tradition wedding where the new married couple did not respect their parents
and had their wedding according to how they wanted it to be instead of considering what their
parents might have wanted. There goes Uncle Chuan a loving soft-hearted and conservative
father with a rigid set of rules and principles. After years of years in England, his prodigal
daughter, Bee returns home during Chinese New Year. Surprisingly, she brought along her British
fiancé, Benji to introduce him to her estranged conservative widower father who lives in
Cameron Highlands. Uncle Chuan was very upset with Bee’s attitude and the old man initially
opposes the marriage and refuses to give his blessings. With all the cultural differences and
languages barrier that could potentially damages the relationship between Benji, Bee and her
father, Uncle Chuan. He feels that something must be done quick. Somehow Uncle Chuan gives
in and reluctantly allows them to marry but with one condition. He insists on keeping with the
tradition and his promises to his childhood friends to hand-deliver the wedding invitations with
his future son-in-law. Benji didn’t agree with the idea, where he suggested to Bee that wedding
invitations can be delivered through emails, post and also short messages service. In the end,
Benji agrees, but on condition they make the journey on his motocycle. Despite their lack of
understanding towards one another, Benji and Uncle Chuan embark on a nationwide journey to
hand-deliver those wedding invitations to his latter’s childhood friends. A road trip that takes the
two people from differnet backgrounds and cultures learn about each other and about
themselves. He also went to his monitor’s house and finds out Bee was there too. Uncle Chuan
who was a conservative man was furious about it because during Chinese New Year, no one
should leave the house empty. And he left the place with a heavy heart. Benji had to deal with
learning so many new rules due to their culture and the worse is that his soon to be father in
law can’t communicate with him properly due to the language barrier. Throughout the journey
with Uncle Chuan, he learnt various Chinese tradition in it. An example would be the “Worship
to the God of Sky Scene” and it is celebrated during Chinese New Year and was so grand.
Sooner or later, Uncle Chuan learnt to accept Benji when Benji bought a second-handed yellow
car and sell off his bike despite Uncle Chuan’s backache. The next day, the duo visited Fatimah,
Uncle Chuan’s Chinese primary school classmate, whose cheeky grandchildren called Benji “the
sofaman” because of his tshirt was the same as sofa. Fatimah reminded Benji that today is their
birthday as in the Chinese calendar. Once they’ve reached home, Uncle Chuan found out that
Bee was not at home and Benji informed to Uncle Chuan that Bee went out to the town which
is not true. Bee was in an island at Sabah to clear off her mind. Later at night, Uncle Chuan
cooked mee with two eggs for his daughter because it was her birthday. He waited for her to
come home to enjoy her birthday meal but he realized that she couldn’t make it in time, and
he took her mee and threw it away. The next morning, he cooked a fresh batch of mee for
Bee. In the meantime, Uncle Chuan’s class monitor passed away. Uncle Chuan was broken heart
and refuses to pay the last respect to his friend even after Bee and Benji advised him. He
refuses by not attending the funeral before their daughter’s wedding because it was a sign of
bad luck. Instead, Uncle Chuan decided to make a “solar ballon” as it was a wish from his class
monitor when they were a kid. Benji lead a team and managed to make his dream come true
by using about 10,000 plastic bags for the solar ballon. As the day passes by, the wedding has
arrived. Most of Uncle Chuan’s classmates came included Fatimah. Same goes to Benji’s parents.
And the marriage ended perfectly with a perfect picture of Bee and her husband Benji and her
father. Bee realized that no matter how big or small of the gesture was, the love towards each
other is the same.
