Happy New Year everyone! I figured if I was going to write an Editor’s Notepad for 2011 I had better do it now. It looks like we are all going to be very busy with all of the tournaments this year! Our new website has opened, and we hope that you like the new look and feel of it. On it you will find a new fishing report each week for each lake, the tournament stories from the weekend, press releases, and more. There is also a new calendar link, and we are busy “populating” it with all of the tournaments on both lakes. If we have missed any or if you see any errors, please let us know. At the forefront of a double whammy frontal system, USA Bass Trails held their fourth of five season events on Sam Rayburn with their debut tournament trail December 11, 2010. The fish were active, as 2/3 of the field registered limits. Harold Allen & Albert Collins won the event by 08/100ths of a pound! The scene was set at the Umphrey Family Pavilion as 66 teams headed out to find their creel and tally valuable points toward the Championship for the season. Even with recent rains, Sam Rayburn is still just over 8 feet low. Anglers enjoyed moderately cool temperatures but battled the wind as the first front marched in. As the weigh in began, Chad York and Jason Horton set the mark to beat, bringing in a 24.12 lb limit with a 7.33 lb kicker. Their weight looked like it was going to hold for the win well through half the weigh in until Harold Allen and Albert Collins brought in their limit tipping the scales to 24.20 lbs, nosing just ahead of the leaders by less than a half an ounce! “Our plan was to fish drop-offs and stay on them,” Collins explained. Hitting a lot of areas that had stumpy drops from 6’-14’,

their arsenal included a prototype crank bait from 6th Sense Lures, jigs and E2 Baits craw worms. “It took us until around 9:30 to complete our first limit, giving us around 16 pounds.” The wind was fierce, but the team fought it all day to stay in their target areas. “It seemed like when the wind shifted, it helped us. The fish started biting better and we had a little less boat pressure to deal with.” After 12:00, they culled their entire initial limit and had two over five pounds in the well. Allen & Collins took 1st place with 24.20 lbs, and would like to thank Carrot Stix, Ardent reels, E2 Baits and Vicious Line for their support. Jason Horton & Chad York won 2nd place overall with their 24.12 lb limit, and their 7.33 lb kicker held up for Big Bass. “We had an awesome day!” Their strategy was to stay in grass, 5’-7’ deep, and throw ½ ounce rattle traps all day. “We started catching fish right away. Chad caught the big one around 7:30, and by 8:00 we had all of our fish.” They hit 10 or 15 points throughout the day, but it was the first one that was loaded with the fish they needed. The team would like to thank Jordan Marine in Vidor, TX for helping them stay on the water.

3rd place was won by Philip Crelia and Dennis Permentor with a 22.17 lb limit. “Man, it was windy!” Philip began. “We ran around a good bit today, fishing the grass with ½ ounce traps. We fished everything from the backs of creeks to main lake points in 2’ to 8’ of water.” Their day started out slow, but kept getting better as the day wore on. “We didn’t start catching anything until around 9:30, but got a limit put together pretty quick after that then we culled all day. During the last hour we probably caught 40 fish.” The team would like to thank Hometown Tackle & Marine in Center, TX and Legend Boats for their support.

Aquatic Invasive Species in Texas

Problematic invasive species should be viewed as biological pollution. Invasive species can be detrimental to other plants and animals and cost millions of dollars to control. As people become more mobile and resources from all over the world become more and more available, the incidence of invasive species increases. As a natural resources manager, I am careful to not immediately lump all invasive or non-native species into a “bad” or “good” category. In dealing with reservoir fisheries I can certainly see benefits associated with hydrilla, a non-native plant from South America. It provides habitat in an altered ecosystem where it is difficult to establish native aquatic plants that evolved in rivers and protected bayous in sufficient quantity to affect fish populations in an exposed lake. This is not to say hydrilla is always beneficial, as one must look for both pros and cons at individual lakes. Hydrilla can be very problematic in shallow lakes and those with high residential shoreline development. However, there are two invasive species that have recently invaded Texas waters that provide absolutely no benefits – giant salvinia and zebra mussels. Everyone should be aware of these species and take part in ensuring that their spread is kept to a minimum. Giant salvinia is now established with no hope of ever completely eradicating it in several of Texas’s premiere lakes,

including Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn, and Conroe. It is also present in many other areas. Giant salvinia is a floating aquatic fern floating originally from Southern Brazil and is undoubtedly the most problematic aquatic plant in all of Texas. Infestations can expand rapidly, with coverage capable of doubling in a week under ideal circumstances. This plant was first first discovered in the state less than 12 years ago and has since that time fouled thousands of acres of fishing fishing and hunting areas as well as cost millions of dollars so far to simply control it. Giant salvinia can be distinguished from its close relative common salvinia by looking at its leaf hairs. Leaf hairs on giant salvinia are split four ways at their tip and then come back together to form an egg beater shape, whereas the leaf hairs on common salvinia do not come back together. A magnifying glass is needed for a positive identification. Giant identification. salvinia can form dense mats on the water surface that inhibit fishing, swimming, boating, and other water activities. These mats can also block sunlight from penetrating the water column, thus inhibiting other aquatic vegetation to grow. Giant salvinia is free floating so it can spread throughout a lake relatively easily through wind and wave action. Also, since it does not grow in the water column it provides no beneficial habitat to fish. Although it’s illegal to transport, giant salvinia spreads from one lake to another on boat trailers. Fishermen are encouraged and by law required to clean their trailers and boats of any and all prohibited aquatic vegetation before leaving the boat launch area. Zebra mussels were first discovered in Lake St. Clair, a small waterbody connecting Lakes Huron and Erie in 1988. They are originally from Europe and it is suspected they were transported to the United States via bilge water in cargo ships. Zebra mussels were first discovered in Texas in 2006 by an alert Game Warden on a boat from another state

at Lake Texoma. In 2009, live adult zebra mussels were found in Lake Texoma and there is good reason to suspect that they are in Lake Lavon as well. There is serious concern they can spread throughout the Red and Trinity River watersheds. Zebra mussels multiply rapidly and can block water treatment plant pipes. They can also be detrimental to fish, bird, and other native mussel populations. Zebra mussels will attach to just about anything in the water and can restrict water inflow pipes, foul swimming beaches, damage boat engine cooling systems, and cause navigation buoys to sink. Once zebra mussels are established they are impossible to eradicate with current technology. The costs associated with control vary, but for many water treatment plants costs average in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Boaters and fishermen can help slow the spread of zebra mussels by practicing the following steps when leaving any waterbody suspected of having them present: • Inspect the boat and trailer and remove any foreign objects found. • Drain all water from the boat including the bilge, engine, livewells, and bait buckets. • Wash the boat and trailer at a commercial car wash with high pressure, hot soapy water. Hot water will kill the zebra mussel larvae and when the water from the carwash goes through a water treatment plant the process should kill any remaining mussels. • Open all compartments and livewells and allow the boat and trailer to dry before going to another waterbody. Boaters: Learn from Last Year’s Freeze!
After last winter’s harsh record low freezing temperatures, Boaters should not wait this year to winterize their boats.
The icy blast of arctic air that pushed freezing temperatures across the area last winter left a wake of damage in its path. No one felt it more in their pocket books than some local boat owners. Local boat dealers this year report seeing a huge increase in damage to boat motors caused by last winter’s freeze. With this increased volume of boats needing engine replacements and major repairs, local service departments became backed up. Since a large number of these problems were not discovered by boat owners till late spring, many missed out on this year’s best boating months. “Due to the long duration of the sub freezing temperatures earlier this year, many boats that had previously been unharmed through the winter months experienced major freeze damage” said Chris Knight of H&W Marine. “The results of freeze damage on a marine motor are very costly to repair. This major expense and inconvenience is easily preventable with proper winterization of your boat. Unfortunately, people tend to put off this important preventive maintenance and once we have our first hard freeze; it could be too late!” Marine engines are liquid cooled by water taken in from the lake. A certain amount of this water is left in the cooling system after use. With sustained freezing temperatures the water in the engine expands to nearly twice the volume it was as a liquid. Many of the cavities in the motor that contain this water, like the exhaust manifold and engine block, will end up cracking and causing non-repairable damage that will require replacement of these expensive components. This is similar to what can happen to unwrapped pipes on your house during a freeze. Whether you store your boat on a trailer or in a boat house, winterization is a crucial step in the care of your boat. Boat winterization is best done by the professionals. This process usually includes stabilizing the fuel, an ethanol protectant, changing the gear oil, disconnecting the necessary electrical, cylinder lubrication, an engine freeze guard and some type of winter corrosion protection. A proper winter storage cover and applying an interior moisture inhibitor with mildew protection is also recommended. Some dealers will even include complimentary De-Winterization when spring rolls around. Taking this protective measure will not only save you time and money, it will also assure your boat will greet you with a happy face when warm weather welcomes you again.

Sobczak & Garrie win Bass N Bucks Season Opener with over 28 pounds

Out of the woods and back onto the lake for the first event of the Bass N Bucks 2011 season December 4, 2010 on Sam Rayburn. Lots of heavy limits and several big kickers were caught as well as a few “you should have seen the one that got away” scenarios. Casey Sobczak and Jonathan Garrie blew the field away, winning the tournament with a 28.24 lb limit. Lake levels on Sam Rayburn still show to be around 8’ low, making many points and contours easy to see and channeling the fish to easy to find areas. The bite was on, as many reported having a five fish limit in their livewells within the first hour of fishing. The day was gorgeous with mild temps and gentle ENE winds with occasional gusts. 1st place team Kasey Sobczaak & Jonathan Garrie were using a prototype lure from 6th Sense Lures. Going to several spots, concentrating on bare ridges in 10-18’, they started catching right away. “Within the first 20 minutes, we had five fish in the livewell that probably weighed around 21 pounds,” the team reported. Among them was their 7.26 lb kicker. “We hit a lot of spots and caught a lot of fish throughout the day, but only culled three times.” Those culls pushed their weight to 28.24 lbs, winning the tournament. “It just all went right for us. We had a great day.” Bass N Bucks presented them with $8,000 for their win. They would like to thank their sponsors 6th Sense Custom Tackle, Costa Del Mar and Custom Angle Rods. When Bill Rogers and John Walker brought their limit to the scales, they nudged into 2nd place with their 24.61 lb limit. “We worked hard today. We fished in all depths with spinnerbaits, spooks, and Carolina rigged flukes.” They had an early limit, but it was small – less than 10 pounds. “We had started out shallow, but after

boating those five we headed to deeper water.” They not only culled those five, but the next five after that! “There was one three pounder in the well that we just couldn’t cull.” Their best bait of the day was a chartreuse/white double willow Mr. Blitz spinnerbait. The team was awarded a check for $4,000 and would like to thank Advertising

four limits of fish by 1:00 for a continuous cull all day. Fishing shallow ditches, around 4’ deep in the backs of coves, their baits included Senko’s rigged wacky style, rattle traps and chatter baits. The spot they picked was loaded with fish and stayed in that same area all day. Bass N Bucks presented them with a $3,000 check and they would like to thank Needmore Tackle for their support. There were a lot of bass pushing the 8 pound mark registered on the scales, but Tyler Bearden caught the biggest of the day fishing with Tommy Dickerson weighing 9.24 pounds. He had targeted a long point that dropped off to 25’. Using a Carolina rigged fluke, on his 5th cast he felt a small tick. “I

didn’t know it was so big when it first bit. After I set the hook, she started pulling drag.” At that point he knew she had some size to her, but still didn’t realize how big it was. “Once I got her coming in some, she jumped – that’s when I saw she was just barely hooked.” Carefully, he worked her to the boat and got her secured in the livewell. The team won $1,000 for Big Bass to add to their 5th place winnings of $1,700. “I’d like to thank my partner Tommy, my wife Ashley for all of her support and my family. Our new baby boy was just born last week. This has been a very good Thanksgiving and Christmas for us.”

Snipe Hunting: are you serious?

I don’t remember how old I was (elementary school age) when I went on my first snipe hunt, but I recall coming out smelling like a rose. I, along with several others, was given a grocery bag (paper) and told to squat down in the bushes along a trail. The bag was to catch the snipe as the other group chased them out of the bushes. The idea of this was that the “chasers” would make some noise in the bushes like they were trying to chase something and then go back to camp leaving the “baggers” out in the woods. Lucky for me I heard the camp cook yelling that a cobbler was ready and headed back to camp (actually got back before some of the “chasers”). Some of the others were not as lucky. I came out of that experience thinking there was no such thing as a snipe. There actually is a bird called the common snipe and they are found in Texas. The common snipe (Gallinago gallinago) is a migratory bird that winters in Texas. It is often found along wetland areas. The bird is a dove sized white bird with brown markings that enable it to blend in very well to the shoreline habitat that it uses. It has a long slender beak that it uses to catch insects. The bird when flushed flies very fast and erratic making it a challenge for even the best wing

shooter. The snipe breeds in the North primarily in Canada and Alaska. They build a nest on the ground and build it up so that the eggs are several inches off of the ground. The nest is built in plain view under a bush but blends in perfectly with the surrounding environment. The female then normally lays 4 eggs in the nest. The male and female both share in incubation of the eggs which hatch in 18 to 20 days. The young leave the nest soon after hatching for tall grass habitat relying on the ability to blend in to protect them. Snipe feed by wading along the water’s edge catching bugs in the soft mud. They catch food by probing the soft mud with their long narrow bill. Food of choice for the snipe are worms and bug larvae.

Hunting of this bird was very popular in the early to mid twentieth century, especially in the Northern U.S. and Canada. The birds were plentiful and hunters could harvest large numbers of birds. For instance, James J. Pringle (Southern Gentleman) harvested 69,087 snipe in the period of 1867 to 1887 at his favorite hunting hole in Southwestern Louisiana near Bayou Teche. Another example is Captain Bogardus (a famous exhibition shooter) who shot 340 snipe in one day during a hunt in Illinois. Snipe populations do not allow for these large numbers to be harvested anymore, but hunts can still be very challenging and fun. To hunt in Texas a hunter will need a hunting license, HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification, and the migratory game bird stamp. The shotgun must be plugged to hold no more than three shells. Lead ammunition can be used and the hunter is allowed 8 per day. Avoiding Hypothermia

This article was published a couple of years ago but is worth running again. Too many times we, as outdoorsmen and women, forget the important safety procedures we need to follow especially during the cold winter months. Remember it only takes a second to change or end your life when water and cold weather mix. Recently a friend of mine was fishing on Kerr Lake located in the eastern part of Oklahoma when the wind picked up to a level making the lake unsafe. Before he and his fishing partner new it, they were in trouble. Water started coming over the back of their boat and in just a few short minutes they were in some very frigid water. The air temperature had been below freezing for several days putting the temperature of the water surface right at freezing. Within minutes they would have been another statistic had they not been aware of what was happening. Fortunately they were able to make it to the shore and summon help giving them the chance they needed to survive. This happens too many times where the people never had a chance. Whether it was because of their lack of knowledge and inexperience on the water or because they were too far from shore. In all cases if they had been wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) they would have had a better chance of making it to safety. As spring draws near there will be times when we are out on the lake fishing our favorite catfish hole and we forget some of the basic rules for cold weather. In the early part of spring there will be days when the temperature will be in the 60’s or low 70’s giving us a feeling of comfort putting us at a greater risk of bodily harm from hypothermia. The water temperature will still be in the 30’s or maybe even the 50’s. A storm can roll in or you may even have boat problems and if you’re not prepared it could cost you everything including your life. Your normal body temperature is usually right around 98.6• F. With hypothermia your body fails to maintain a normal temperature and you will have an internal body temperature of 95• F or lower, at this point your life is starting to be endangered

and you need medical attention immediately. Because your body will lose its heating ability faster in water, hypothermia will set in faster giving you just a few short minutes to get out of the water and into dry clothes. The water temperature doesn’t have to be icy cold to cause hypothermia to set in; any water which is colder than your body temperature will cause hypothermia if you are in it long enough. However, if you are in water which has a temperature of 32• or less, within 15 minutes you will either be exhausted to the point where you can no longer help yourself or you will be unconscious. Last year about this time while fishing with my son, he fell into the water when he was trying to get the landing net for a fish I had hooked. The first thing I had him do once I got him back into the boat was to take off his wet clothes and put on a dry pair of coveralls. It is always a good practice to carry extra clothes including socks and shoes with you on your boat. If you or your fishing partner falls in and there isn’t anything dry to change into your battle has just began. Now you have wet clothes, cold air temperature and now the wind comes into effect. With this combination you are in real trouble. Evaporation of the water from your skin further cools your body, dropping your internal temperature. A wind blowing over the wet parts of your body and clothes greatly increases evaporation and cooling. Hypothermia usually comes on gradually and often people aren’t aware they are in need of medical attention. Common signs to look for are shivering, which is your body’s attempt to generate heat, slurred speech, cold pale skin, an abnormally slow rate of breathing and fatigue, lethargy or apathy. The severity of hypothermia can vary depending on how low your body temperature gets. If it gets low enough it will eventually lead to cardiac and respiratory failure then death. When I was stationed in Alaska we had to go through special training for the arctic regions and one of the things we were taught was to never unbutton your coat when you feel hot. People would be out hunting or fishing

or maybe just walking through the snow and they would begin to warm up, they would sit down and unbutton their coat and the cold air would hit their body and within a minute or two they would pass out from hypothermia and the end result was almost always death. Whether in Alaska or Texas or Louisiana, I have found this to be excellent advice. Seek immediate medical attention for anyone who appears to have hypothermia. DO NOT apply direct heat to them. DO NOT use warm water or a heating pad to warm the victim and DO NOT apply heat to the extremities; this will force cold blood back toward the heart, lungs and brain causing the core body temperature to drop. Remember YOU are YOUR first line of defense: DO keep dry clothes in your boat to include shoes and socks. DO remove ALL wet clothes and put on dry clothing. DO let someone know where you will be fishing and when you will be home. DO keep and eye on the weather and other conditions surrounding you to include other boaters. DO get the hypothermic person out of the cold. DO keep water proof matches or some other device to start a fire in the event something should happen. DO remember the water doesn’t have to be at or below freezing to cause hypothermia. With these few DO’s and DO NOT’s you strand a better chance of making it in cold weather making your fishing better. I have a saying I would like to share with you when it comes to weather; “If in doubt, DON’T go out” I have found this to be a good rule of thumb and it helps ME keep ME safe.

Things We Did In 2010 That We Will Not Do In 2011
that the fish are biting • Assume that I have air in my trailer spare tire • Forget to plug in my boat battery charger • Listen to rumors of fish being caught 20 miles away - and then make a dry run anyway • Buy every new lure I see marketed by those smiling anglers on television • Think that all of the winning stringers are being caught on the other side of the lake • Believe any fishing reports unless they are from my mother … or perhaps my pastor • Believe the weatherman’s weekend forecast • Leave anything valuable in my boat when it sits in front of a restaurant or motel • Forget to take my cell phone and camera when I go fishing • Use light line when fishing in areas with lot’s of trees and heavy brush • Sit a steaming cup of coffee between my legs when I drive the boat • Forget and leave another buoy marker at one of my best fishing locations • Lock the keys to my towing vehicle … in my towing vehicle • Try to “trolling motor” through an area with many trotlines • Leave all of the snacks and drinks we were going to enjoy in the towing vehicle • Try to “front-end” the guy fishing in the back of the boat • Start getting really worried when I have not had a strike in four hours • Store plastic worms in boxes that dissolve when they come in contact with the plastic • Try to light a cigarette by shorting out a pair of pliers and screwdriver on the battery • Drop any more chain saws in the lake while cutting/ placing brush in sweet spots • Forget to take out my long rear boat light when motoring in areas of low timber • Accidentally hit the trolling motor switch when climbing over the front of the boat • Get a “bird-nest” on six consecutive rods while fishing at night • Assume that I know the area “like the back of my hand” when motoring at night • Leave the dock without a change of clothes and toilet paper stored in the boat • Assume that all of the fish my partner and I caught were removed from the livewell • Over-estimate the size and weight of the fish that I catch
I am sure that a few of you will have to worry about these issues. However, for most of us, these and other items made for some awkward and somewhat funny moments during 2010. And I did forget to mention one of the most important of the issues. ….

• Forget to buy my new fishing license until I am checked by the game warden • Leave my life jackets (that I used to have) in the boat when I motor down the highway • Make “one more cast” when the lighting and rain is drawing closer and closer • Assume that I have enough gas in the boat for the entire days fishing • Forget to put my raingear in the boat • Leave my tackle box, rods and boat key sitting in the garage when I go fishing • Try to go across a shallow stumpy flat with the boat on full plane • Forget to put the drain-plug in my boat • Forget to take off my transom saver when I launch the boat • Leave my billfold at home when I need to pay for the gasoline at the service station • Forget to put an extra pair of gloves in the boat when fishing in January • Fill the boat up with diesel instead of regular gasoline • Forget to enter a GPS coordinate for the new and remote launching area I am using • Forget to set the alarm clock for the morning of the tournament • Break another rod tip with the lid of the dry storage compartment • Assume that I have another bag of the only color worm

Fish still Eat, No Matter How Cold - and - Addicted to Fluorocarbon

Hello, Anglers. Is it cold enough for you? We have had some very cold weather and I am putting this report together and the weather forecast is saying a low of 25 degrees in the morning at daylight at my boat launch on The Bend. We just made arrangements to delay our start fishing time to 7:30 as temps should be above freezing by then. Update: Wishful thinking.... the temp reading on my Tundra said 27 degrees when I backed the boat in the water one late December morning. We did not see another boat on the lake all day and we fished until early afternoon. We caught a lot of bass that day. I am fortunate that I am not bothered very much by cold weather but I do have some of the best warm weather clothes available and they sure help keep you comfortable in some

tough weather situations. I have had numerous people over the years ask if fish really bite when it is this cold? I sometimes ask “Do we stop eating in the winter? With Christmas meals fresh on my mind I can safely say....”No, I don’t think so”. Yes, it is true that fish are cold blooded creatures and while they do not eat as often in cold conditions, they still feed. In addition, presentations of lures this time of year often have to be adapted to fish being less active and can be the difference of catching very little or having a great day. Fishing slower is often the key to getting a cold-water bass to bite and there have been days where, in order to catch a fish, you just cast your soft plastic worm, let it sink and never move it. For this technique, I hold my rod at 1 or 2 o’clock position in order to feel a bite/tap and during cold conditions these can be very light. This technique is known as “dead sticking”. There are other techniques which also can be productive in cold weather and as many of you know a couple of my favorites include the jigging spoon and drop shot. These along with DD22s, Rat-L-Traps, Stanley RV Sites - Motel Rooms - Waterfront Cabins - Boat Launch - Boat Slips Swim Max Jigs and Vibrashaft Live Bait – Sandy Beaches – Marina Store – Gas on the Water spinnerbaits keep my rods Complimentary Coffee and WI-FI occupied most of the winter. There are several products which made my fishing more productive but I want to mention one that has made me rethink some things. I have gone to Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon line exclusively on all of my Texas, Carolina rigs, shaky heads and wacky rods. I also use it a lot of the time on crankbaits and spinnerbaits when I need to get the bait deeper. This line is a god-send in clear water and allows the angler to be able to use a heavier line and not sacrifice anything while giving the angler several important advantages. Fluorocarbon is much more sensitive than mono, has minimal stretch, basically transparent and has amazing abrasion strength. I can use a spool of Berkley Fluorocarbon for 5 to 10 days, providing I don’t have a major backlash which, with my Revo reels, is seldom. This helps to offset the cost since it usually runs around $25 for a 200 yd spool of 15 to 20 pound test which basically will spool 2 reels. However, it is addictive... if you get used to it, when you go back to mono it is just not the same. The New Year is here and with it comes a new fishing season for everyone. This could be the year for you to catch that trophy bass. You’ll never know sitting at home all the time dreaming of catching all those fish. Grab some gear and get out there. Now the water is cold and that keeps it a little cooler on the water. Make sure you have plenty of warm clothes and a change of clothes in a watertight bag, just in case. Hyperthermia can set in very fast if you happen to fall in the water. January can be tough but it can also be very rewarding. There is a chance of catching a trophy fish coming up and looking for a place to spawn. These big fish will come up when the weather turns warm for a few days. Then they move back with the next front. That’s what makes this time of year so good for catching a trophy fish. There will be some males running the shallows looking for nesting areas on the warmer days. Some will be starting to use staging areas as they move up. Finding one of these spots can be a lot of fun as these fish will be moving back and fourth. Most

the fish up shallow will be a little spooky and may be hard to get to bite. You can bet there are some close by that will. Lots of baits come to mind. The most talked about is the Rat-L-Trap for covering a lot of water and catching a lot of big fish. Get some new line on, grab a few new baits and get out on the lake and catch some fish. The Stanley Spinner Bait is also a good bait to throw when the grass is right at the surface. White and Chartreuse are just two of the colors that I start with. I also like to drop them off the edge at times. You might want to hang on as I have had a few fish almost pull the rod out of my hands. Look for some fish to head to the points and drains as they move toward the spawning grounds. The Crappie will be up the rivers for the most part till early spring. Then they will make their move back down the rivers to look for spawning grounds. Not to say you can’t catch a few around the bridges or tight to a few brush piles. If you’re wanting to get out of the house and catch a few fish, go for it. We have a pontoon boat that can handle up to 8 Crappie anglers.

I want to thank a few of the bait shops in the area for their support and continuing to stay up with all the new baits that pop up. These shops have saved my bacon several times when I needed something fast. Think about them when you need some baits or a new rod. These guys and gals in the shop keep their ears to the ground and hear a lot about baits and tricks that are working. Stop by and catching up on the gossip and pick up some of the hot baits the fish have been biting on this week. Can’t hurt and sometimes it can really help. If you don’t think that’s a job just stop by one of the shops and look at all the baits on the walls. If you don’t see what you want ask about it. Most the time they can get it for you. The Bass are hemmed up and from the way the Bud Lite Tournament went they are real easy to catch and were big ones. The Rat-L-Traps, Stanley Spinner Baits, and the good ole crank baits are doing great. Big worms Texas rigged and the Carolina rig will get you a bite. Folks please if you see anyone catching large numbers of bass and keeping them please report them to your local Game Warden. With the water low as it is we have to look out for the bass as best we can. The crappie are starting up the big creeks and rivers now. River bends and ledges are the best bet to catch some nice fish. Big jigs, road runners and there is a new jig called Slab Daddy by Blakemore that I really like. No reports on Cat fish right now. You all know it’s this time of the year we all give thanks for the good we have had the past year. October is the last month of our fishing season. The point standings for the year were pretty close up to the very end! Tammy Davis won this month’s tournament with 5 fish weighing 11.02 lbs. Here are the results from the latest tournament. Many anglers reported a good day of fishing, but most of the fish were short. 1st place – George Aucoin and Hunter Aucoin – 17.57#; in a tournament that not many teams broke in to double digits, George and Hunter stole the show with 2 double digit sacks each! George’s 10.96# and Hunter’s 13.87# put them ahead of the rest of the crowd. They had a few 3-4# fish, with the biggest being Hunter’s 5.20# bass. Rumor is Hunter wielded the jig to put together his sack. 2nd place – Chester Sams and Bryan Lohr – 15.76#; they led the standings going into the Saturday tournament, and no one really thought anybody would beat them. Chester’s 6.38# bass contributed to this second place sack, which also won him honors for the big bass of the tournament. 3rd place – Huey Martin and Barbara Martin – 12.51#; Barbara said she just couldn’t catch that 5th fish to make a limit, but her 9.85#, 4 fish sack still beat Huey’s limit of 8.95#. That 9.85# sack also propelled Barbara into the top ten standings of the club, so congrats to her! 4th place – Leslie Woodall and Troy Woodall – 11.5#; Leslie weighed in a limit and Troy weighed in two, but, one of Troy’s was a nice 4.19# bass. 1st place out of the money went to Forrest Erb and Morgan Terry, with 8.36#. The 2010 Port Arthur Refinery Bass Club Angler of the Year is LESLIE WOODALL! Leslie finished all alone in the 90# club, with a total weight of 95.34# for the year! Congratulations Leslie!

Congratulations to Clay Ivy for winning the 2010 Many Bass Club Championship Tournament. Clay Ivy won the November 20th tournament with a three fish limit weighing an impressive 14.40 lbs. Fishing shallow ledges in the Blue Lake area of Toledo Bend Reservoir his fish were caught using crank baits and plastic worms. Paul Hammontree finished in second place followed by Mike Smith in third place. Big Bass honors was also won by Ivy with a 7.15 lb lunker. Thanks is given to all those who gave their time and efforts to make this tournament a success. Many Bass Club’s December Tournament
Continuing his winning ways, Wayne Moran won the Many Bass Clubs’ December tournament with a five fish limit weighing 12.96 lbs. Fishing the Housen Bay area, Moran caught the winning stringer on rattle traps and crank baits. Bob Self finished in second place with a five fish limit weighing 12.79 lbs. Richard Pesson won third place with a five fish limit weighing 12.65 lbs. Mike Smith claimed big bass honors with a 5.37 lb lunker.
A total of 61 fish were caught weighing 135 lbs for an average fish weight of 2.20 lbs.

Double uni Knot
Start To start, overlap the ends of two similar diameter lines for about 6” inches.

loop Knot
Step 1 To start, tie a loose overhand knot using about 10” inches of working end protruding through the knot. It’s OK to use more line if needed. Step 2 Feed the working end through the eye of the lure or hook.

Step 1 Take one end and form a loop, leaving about 8” inches of working end extending beyond the loop. Step 2 Tie a loose uni-knot, making six (6) turns around the towlines and leave the loop open. Step 3 Feed the tag end through the open loop, and then pull it…

Step 3 Then feed the working end back through the overhand knot. Adjust the first loop to desired size. Step 4 Make a second overhand knot around the standing part of the line just past the first knot. Step 5 Finish by tightening each of the two individual knots…

Step 4 …to form a snug tight knot around the line.

Step 5 Repeat steps 1, 2 & 3 in the same order, to form a snug tight knot with the other line. Step 6 Cinch up both knots -- by pulling the two standing lines in opposite directions -- to slide the knots snugly together. Step 7 Trim the ends close to nearest knot and you’re done!

Step 6 …then slide them together snug, against the eye of the lure or hook, and your done!

The Improved Blood Knot is used for tying two pieces of monofilament together of relatively equal diameters. 1. Overlap the ends of your two strands that are to be joined. Twist them together about 10 turns.

2. Loop around the standing part of line 5 or 6 times.

3. Thread the tag end back between the eye and the coils as shown.

creeks. Once they get into water over thirty feet a 1/32 oz jig can sometimes be more productive than shiners. Either drop your own brush or look for natural cover where the Crappie will bunch up. The limit is fifty per person. Remember for the months of December, January and February you are required to keep all the Crappie you catch (no minimum length). The White bass will feeding heavy and holding on the north end old river channel sand-bars waiting to move into the river proper. Concentrate on the south inside bend of the bars with slab spoons and tail spinners. Use your electronics to locate the bait- fish. In January the water temperature usually drops to the lower fifties and forties moving the Black bass into deep water. Their metabolism slows down and they become less active, feeding less and conserving energy. The easiest way to locate the bass is to locate the bait- fish. Look for balls of shad on your LCR in deep creeks, sloughs and along the river channel. When you locate the shad the bass are usually underneath just off the bottom or suspended. If the bass are on the bottom, they will orient themselves close to some type of structure, brush- tops, lay-downs, stumps, ledges, drops or humps. A jig, jigging spoon, Texas rigged plastic or drop-shot rig fished vertically can be very affective in triggering a strike. If the bass are suspended, a fluttering spoon or tail spinner cast out and counted down and retrieved with a pumping motion can also trigger a strike. Once the fish have moved into deep water, the strong northern fronts don’t affect them as much as they do when the fish are in shallow water. Remember when fishing cold water down size your lures and fish slowly.

Going into January the lake is still 7ft below high pool. Unless we get an unusually large amount of rain we should expect to be fishing these low conditions through the month. Caution should be used when running the lake. Go to Toledo-Bend.com for available boat ramps. Huxley Bay Marina has a deep water boat ramp. In January, most fisherman venture to Toledo Bend to harvest our world famous Crappie or to load up on the White Bass that are feeding heavy on the old river channel sand bars. The Crappie will start moving into deeper water along the old river channel and towards the end of the month usually will be found moving into the deeper

And don’t forget the Kick N Bass. Crappie ~ Excellent. Lower water levels always means great action at the chicken coop. You should catch them good on minnows in 22’-32’ of water until the water temps hit the upper 50’s. Then the crappie will move towards backs of creeks to get ready and spawn, then go to blue/white or pink/white jigs around shallow brush in 8’ to 12’ of water. Brush piles along deep creeks are also producing if you don’t want to deal with the crowd at the coop. Catfish~Goodoverbaitedholesin22’-32’ofwateronCatfish Charlie dough bait and live carp or trot line minnows. Rig your catfish bait on a lighter weight for best results 1/4 oz. or less. White Bass ~ Good. You can find them along the old river on the north end of lake. Use a Humdinger tail spin in gold color. Later in the month the white bass will start the annual run up the river. Live crawfish and 1/4 oz. rattle traps will work best. ***I will be at the Outdoor Show in Dallas January 7-9, 2011 doing daily seminars. Well, another year has come and gone. Hunting season is ending and most anglers are chomping to get back on the water. The big topic on Toledo Bend is the lower lake level. It’s due to the inspection of the dam back in September. But, all the boat ramps are open and in good shape. Some of the boat lanes a little tricky in the back areas but, all the main lake river lanes are good and clear. The lower water has fishing really good. So, bring your new gear and hit the water! BASS ~ Good.Start early with a Humdinger in green/white or a silver 3/4 oz. slab spoon fished on 30lb. Fins pink wind tamer

SOUTH TOLEDO BEND REPORT

It looks like we will go into 2011 with Toledo’s water level well below the average levels of early January. We have had an extremely dry summer, fall and early winter of 2010. Hopefully, by the time this report is published we will have had some meaningful rainfall. Currently, at press time, the lake is close to 164 feet which is 8 feet below full pool and about 6 feet below normal January levels. Fishing has been excellent for the past several months on The Bend and January shows promise to be the same. I know I will fish a lot of deep water on the southern part of the lake this month but with a rise in the lake and some mild weather, a portion of the fish

population could definitely move to shallow structure. However, there will be a lot of bass on deep ridges close to spawning grounds as well as on the bends of creeks. On the shallow patterns we will use Stanley’s new VibraWedge spinnerbait as well as their Swim Max Jig and target shoreline grass and hit points as well as drains and ditches as fish begin to think spawn. Of course, I will also have on a couple of original Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps and mostly likely a Toledo Gold and Rayburn Red. I also like blue/silver and white crawfish trap colors. I will either rip the grass with these or yo yo them on the outside edge of grass. I also have a lot of faith in Bill Norman’s DLN, DD14 and DD22s worked on deep points and main lake ridges as well as the edge of major creeks. In addition, I have so much confidence in a TX rig on Toledo and choose Berkley’s 7 and 10 inch

Power Worms as well as a Trick Worm. I also suggest a Carolina rig with a creature bait such as Stanley Itsabug, Power Craw, Critter Craw and baby brush hog. We will work a Carolina rig in water from 15 to 30 feet, depending on weather conditions. Finally, there’s no doubt that I will have a 3/4 Jigging spoon on as well as a drop shot to head deep when things get tough in shallow and mid depth areas. Toledo Bend has produced some heavy weights in 2010 and 2011 ‘ain’t gonna be any different. God Bless...Good fishing! Seth Taylor Shamblin seven year old son of Scott and Chanda Shamblin of Center, Texas, scored in a big way, on November 27, 2010. He killed a seven point buck and two turkeys. From and avid “hunting family” Seth has been sitting in the stand since he was three. Grandfathers, Ron (Doc) Shamblin and Larry (Papa) Jones, have been willing participants in training. The family all celebrate Seth’s marksmanship….and luck!

Henry Mcmillon kills first buck. This 8 point brute was taken by Henry on11/30 with his 30cal. m-1-carbine at 115 yards. After his initial shot knocked the deer down, a life-and-death, handto-hoof struggle insued, in which Henry finally wrestled the beast down after crossing two sloughs and swimming most of lake Steinhagen. The 10 year old suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

Macie Murty, 10 years old, shot a 9 point buck on opening day with her dad Joey Murty at the Sandy Creek Hunting Club. The buck weighed 150 pounds. Her sister Lexie Murty, age 8, also shot her first deer on opening morning. Both of the deers they shot was their first deer to ever shoot.
