News
by Matt Charles
Students moved from Folkestone to Canterbury by their university, will not be allowed to attend events during Fresher’s Week, according to Christ Church Students’ Union (CCSU). More than 150 students from University Centre Folkestone (UCF) will be moved to the main Canterbury Christ Church campus in September. The decision to close UCF was taken after it was deemed “unfit for purpose”. But the Medwire can reveal that the new arrivals will be unable to attend events during Fresher’s Week, due to “very limited capacity”. As part of Fresher’s Week, which will feature Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and comedian Jarred Christmas, CCSU are offering a £40 deal for Fresher’s to have guaranteed access to events, plus queue jumps and food/drinks deals. Second and third-year students are not allowed to purchase wristbands - however many of the students arriving from Folkestone will be experiencing Canterbury for the first time.

Former VP in Medway job

Shuttle bus to continue
The shuttle bus between the University of Kent’s Medway and Canterbury campus is to return this term. Resuming on Monday, September 23, the shuttle service will be running from 7:30 in the morning from both campuses, with its last journey departing Canterbury at midnight,. Last year’s provider of the service, Kings Ferry will once again be running the route. The service is free for University of Kent students, who are advised to book online before boarding the bus. However, it is still unclear whether the service will be open to students from Greenwich or CCUU, or other visitors. A spokesperson for the Estates Department at the University of Kent said details were “still being discussed”.

You might have been away relaxing all summer but that doesn’t mean everyone has! Editor Jem Collins and her team have rounded up all the latest goings on.

No freshers’ for UCF

Former Vice-President of Kent Union Kenny Budd has landed a new job, helping students at the Medway campus. Kenny, who was VP Activities from 2011-2013, has settled into his post of Student Activities & Scholarship Officer at Medway this term, and will be overseeing a new scholarship scheme on offer for students. Launching this term, the ‘Medway community scholarships’ scheme run by the University of Kent will offer ten scholarships of £1,000 for students who propose projects that “positively engage with members of the local community, the wider student body or both”. Talking about the scheme, Kenny said: “We hope to welcome applications from a range of areas including sport, music, arts and cultural activities but the possibilities need only be limited by the applicant’s imagination and interests.” Currently the scheme will only be available for Medway students who are registered Our team are always on the look out for new and at the University of Kent, but enthusiastic people. LGBT club relaunch
The LGBT Medway society has relaunched with a new president, new logo and new ideas. Since being elected in June, Kieran has quickly taken control of the group and instigated a number of changes to “increase membership” and “strengthen links with the campus and the local area”. He said: “This year I want the LGBT Medway society to really grow in terms of numbers and events. “I’m planning to hold several events each term, and work more closely with other societies at Medway, LGBT community groups in the local area and charities.” To find out more details on how to join turn to page six or visit www.facebook.com/

“Shows how little they care about UCF”
In a series of emails sent by CCSU to previous UCF students, a spokesperson said: “September will be a busy time for all, especially with the arrival of 3000+ new university students. “With limited capacity during Fresher’s Week we’re sorry but you won’t be able to buy passes to the evening events, as it is designed for students new to the university and university life as a whole, to meet new friends and get to know university life.” The spokesperson continued to explain: “This does not stop you from taking part in day time activities or heading to the club where Fresher’s

will also be.” Students affected by the decision have reacted angrily, calling it a “load of bollocks”. Shelby Fuller, 20, a Creative and Professional Writing student, said: “The whole thing just shows how little they care about UCF. They close us down, relocate, and then make us fend for ourselves in a place that makes Folkestone minute in comparison.” Another previous UCF student, 20-year-old Sophie Tumber, who studies Performing Arts, said: “I’m really pissed off. It’s my last year and I can’t attend Fresher’s Week. I’m pissed off about the move to Canterbury as it is and for them to tell us we’ll be treated as Fresher’s and for us to now not be, is stupid.” In response, CCSU have promised

students a special UCF “zoo-themed” ABOVE: UCF night at the Lounge on September students who have 20. been relocated They said: “It’s a late night, free-entry to Canterbury Zoo party, unleash your inner animal! cannot take part in Then head over to our late night freshers’ partner club Chemistry if you wish.” However, official CCSU literature for Fresher’s Week contains no reference to UCF.

Medwire to launch television coverage
by Ola Ojuko
Stop the press! Well kind of. For all you visual learners the Medwire has only gone and branched into video! Finally news, opinions an discussion topics from the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and Greenwich University will be available to watch online on the Medwire.co.uk and YouTube. Cecily Snowball, the Medwire reporter who has pioneered Medwire TV, said: “I just thought it would be a good idea to help expand the Medwire and get more people involved. “Also being at Medway means we miss out on radio and TV opportunities at Canterbury. “I hope it means everyone gets involved and helps to create something awesome.” There has been a new intake of contributors to the Medwire since Medwire TV has been created, promising a new perspective as well as the customary Medwire reliability and integrity. The first installments include advice for Freshers, Freshers week news and tips for navigating the are. Jem Collins, Editor of the Medwire, said: “I’m really excited to be launching Medwire TV and I really hope people will have a look and get involved. “We’ve had a fantastic last year in terms of reaching more people and improving what we do and this is just the next step.”

“I’m really pissed off”
The president of CCSU, Phil Mooney said: “I don’t feel that it is appropriate to comment on just one specific group of students when we have over 3,000 new students arriving across our campuses over the next few weeks.”

A night out in Medway...
Molly Pike gives you the “need to know” on Medway nights out.

Music: Tap is best known for playing metal, indie, rock and classic rock but they do have other rooms for hip hop, chart and cheese. What to wear: The floor is sticky and you’ll end up on your arse quicker than it takes you to down a £1 drink if you wear heels. Wear something casual. Why we love it: It’s the cheapest night out in Medway and they play pretty decent music. They’re always putting on gigs so you could end up spending a lot of your student life here. It’s also the place where you’re guaranteed to run into people you know. Medway: Finish the week with Coopersfest at 1pm with two stages of live music and DJs continuing late into the evening with the BBQ opening at 7pm. Kent: Freshers’ Ball at the Venue features Ms Dynamite & B.Traits. CCCU: . This evening will be the Ibiza closing party at The lounge and club Chemistry where you can share drunken holiday stories and plan to return to Ibiza next year. CCCU: The Warm Up Party at The Lounge will give you a taste of what’s to come and a chance to meet your fellow freshers. Greenwich: BBQ at Sparrows. Nom. CCCU: Karaoke for those filled with enough alcohol not to care.

Saturday 28th

Coopers, On campus

Monday 16th

Tuesday 17th

Medway: We’re assuming you’re bored of super noodles by now so meet at Coopers at 5pm for the supermarket trip. Start as you mean to continue the year with your first night at Tap ‘n Tin for poundland. Well kind of, some drinks are £1.20. CCCU Canterbury: Market Monday

Go there if: You fancy a drink between lectures (naughty), you want to meet some new student pals, you love live music, or if you just don’t fancy paying cab fare to anywhere else. Music: Coopers is always full of the resident Medway campus musicians on a Tuesday so be sure to head down and check them out, there are club nights throughout the year playing all kinds of music. What to wear: Anything. Coopers is a pub so there isn’t much point turning up in your best clothes. Why we love it: It’s our student bar, of course! It can be really fun when they ever put on events. It’s also a great place to have a drink and watch live music.

Casinos, Rochester

Wednesday 18th

Medway: Your first chance to get a taste of the societies and clubs on offer at the mini freshers’ fayre in the afternoon. Coopers will be open again for the Big Night Out at 8pm. CCCU: Forget London 2012, the true test of stamina, speed and willpower will be at The Lounge in the Pub Olympics. Greenwich: Picnic in the park at 2 -5pm followed by a Skool Disco.

Thursday 19th

Medway: Bowling, bingo and Casino Rooms are all on offer. For bowling meet at Coopers at 3pm for two games (£3) and Rock n Roll bingo begins at 8pm. It is also student night at Casino’s with all drinks only £1.40 and if you present valid student ID free entry. Or pop to Rochester Bar for a selected £3 drinks and get your passport for free entry. Medway: Get to know your new home better by taking part in the treasure hunt from Coopers at 5pm. Urban Night also kicks off at 9pm or try Tap ’n’ Tin for music from Rock to Dubstep. CCCU: From 11am - 3pm, The Lounge is hosting Look After Yourself where you can get free condoms, self-defence classes and helpful stuff. Kent: KBar are having a Zombie Beach party from 7pm which just sounds super amazingly cool.

Friday 20th & Saturday 21st

Medway: To finish the week off enjoy Iron Man 3 in Pilkington at 5pm before going back in time for the school disco in Coopers at 8pm. Saturday also sees the arrival of Kent Freshers’ so break the ice with a speed meet at Coopers and find out more about your new flat mates. Kent: The fun all kicks off on Saturday with the choice of either a twilight tour of the campus bars from 7pm or grab your UV paint and bubbles for Neon Hall Wars at Venue. CCCU: A FAMOUS PERSON! Radio One DJ Huw Stevens will be at Chemistry from 9pm on Saturday to officially kick off Freshers’ 2013.

Wednesday 25th

Medway: The Sports Fayre is on in Pilkington from 11am - 3pm with stalls from all the sports clubs. Explore further than Coopers with the town tour at 4pm and pick up an outfit for the beach party at Coopers that evening. There’s also the launch of Bliss’ Social Nights with a foam party and drinks from as little as £1. Greenwich: Yarrrgh! It’s pirates night at Sparrows. CCCU: Freshers’ Fayre = FREE STUFF!

Medway: Not only is it Societies Fayre, the second and possibly most important town tour meets at 6pm in Coopers. This time you will be shown the best bars and pubs in the area ending up at the Casino Rooms for what’s seems to be turning in to an annual UV night. Kent: Canterbury launch their own two day freshers from1pm. CCCU: It’s “Give it a Go day” followed by festival night at Chemistry. Boom. Medway: If you’ve made it through the whole week you certainly deserve the survivors breakfast at Coopers from 11am. Or for those in need of even more respite there’s a Star Trek film marathon from 6pm at Pilkington. Greenwich: You’ll find a comedy session at Sparrows at 8pm to finish off.

Thursday 26th

Go there if: You want to have a really good night out, you don’t want to pay too much for drinks. Music: Mostly whatever music is popular at the time with a few golden oldies thrown in for good measure. What to wear: People tend to get dressy for Casinos so it’s best to put a bit of effort in. Most guys inexplicably wear chinos. Don’t do that, though. Why we love it: It’s a laugh and you always end up getting very drunk. It’s probably the best nightclub in Medway if you’re into the sort of music they play. You’re also pretty much guaranteed to get in because of the size of the place.

Sunday 22nd

Medway: Themed nights start today with the Graffiti Night at Coopers from 6pm and a BBQ from 7pm. Greenwich: Put your tourists hat on for an open bus tour at 11am followed by London Dungeons at 1pm. CCCU: The Fire and Ice Night (which must be less scary than it sounds) kicks off at 9pm. Kent: Party at Venue from 8pm with Freshbook - with T-Shirts!

Monday 23rd

Tuesday 24th

Medway: Spend the whole evening in Coopers with the Man vs Food event at 6pm before live music and the BBQ (if you can manage it) serving until 10pm. Greenwich: All Day is Cultural Cuisine Day at Bar Latitude and Sparrows have a 90s night from 8pm. CCCU: Enjoy some shopping and afternoon tea at the vintage fayre at the St Georges Centre from 10am - 4pm before watching hilarious comedy at The Lounge with Jarred Christmas who you may recognise from Mock the Week and Never Mind the Buzzcocks Kent: Anyone from anywhere is welcome to the Big International Night out which starts at 8pm.

Friday 27th

Medway: For just £2 you can blow some of the student loan that you haven’t spent on alcohol with some shopping at Bluewater, the 4th biggest shopping centre in the UK. Meet in Coopers at 4pm and if you still have the energy return at 8pm for their UV party. Kent: More Freshers’ Fayre fun followed by Venue’s Foam Friday. Greenwich: Acoustic Afternoon is followed by an Open Mic Night at Sparrows.

Sunday 29th

Bliss, Gillingham

Go there if: Bliss is... an experience to say the least and something you should try at least once. Music: Chart and cheese. What to wear: Your usual club attire. They can be pretty strict about what you wear. Why we love it: It can be totally hilarious if you’re up for a good night. They’re always putting on theme nights; the foam party in my fresher’s week was one of the best nights I had, so go to Bliss for something different.

Honourable mentions go to...

Spoons in Rochester (best for drink deals) and Beacon Court Tavern in Gillingham (a good old fashioned pub).

Freshers’ Guide...
Ask Auntie Medway
Feeling a bit lost? Never fear, the infamous Auntie Medway is on hand to dispense her caustic advice.
Brand new, 18, asks: How do I make my room mates like me? If your personality is less than stellar just fake it until you make it. Rather than continuing being the introverted shrew who stays behind their door all year, consider going and sitting in communal areas and actually speaking to people. You’ll be amazed at the world of difference that communicating can bring. And, of course, try to replace the toilet roll if you are the last one to use it. Neat freak, 19, asks: How can you ask people to clean up without losing friends? A tidy kitchen is the cornerstone of any English home, but alas not one that often matters to students so whacked out they can no longer walk. To cause the least ruckus possible, approach a messy student with kind but firm words about the plates in the sink, and try to come up with a cleaning rota at the start of the year. Never, ever leave passive aggressive notes on fridges, unless you want to come home to a passive aggressive puddle of vomit on your pillow. Psychotic, 20, asks: How do you deal with a crazed short irish housemate with an angry and inferiority complexed demeanor who purposely leaves the kitchen door open when cooking and generally makes living with him as unpleasant as possible for me out of jealously at my rugged looks and fun-loving charm. I JUST CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE Consider counselling. Inquire with student services to find out which services is best for you if you are suffering a similar away-from-home break down, or need someone to talk to about the differences between home and university. Worried, 21, asks: I’ve heard freshers fayres can be dangerous and older guys sometimes prey on drunk girls. How do I deal with this?

Naturally, you’re going to want to have as much fun as possible during freshers, and if this involves wetting yourself at the house party of someone you’ve just met, more power to you. To maximise your chance of making it out alive, consider the following: always take as many friends (people you’ve met while sober) as possible to new locations, never let a more-drunk-than-you friend out of your sight, and never leave a drink unattended or accept one from a stranger that you’ve not seen been poured.

Medway’s Top Takeaways...
By Rikki Clarke
If you’re reading this you’ve chosen to have your once-in-a-lifetime university experience in Medway, a group of towns whose chief exports are despair and future Jeremy Kyle guests. However, what the birthplace of the word ‘chav’ does have to offer, conveniently for students, is an abundance of takeaways and fast food places that are a perfect finish to a journey through Medway’s…ahem…thriving nightlife. So here goes, this is your fast food heaven and hell: Cheers Pizza – This Luton based pizza place is famous throughout Medway for one thing and one thing only. An 18 inch pizza, delivered to your door, for £10. To get an idea of how big this pizza is just imagine an average-sized doorway. It will only just fit through that. In terms of quality, it’s a standard pie but when you think that you’re getting over 250 square inches of pizza (yeah, I sat there with a calculator to work it out) for a tenner that makes the phone number 01634 844 855 one of the most important you could have in your contacts. Heck, if you get two of these bad boys they even throw in a free bottle of drink. It’s speed dial number 2 on my phone. Domino’s Pizza – I won’t spend too much time on this because everybody knows Domino’s and what they’re about. What you might not know, however, is how to get more for your money from these guys. Before you order, head over to www.hotukdeals.com to see if there are any current deals that you could use, just make sure they actually work before you go through all your order, though, because lots of them have either run out or are region specific.

Q

And you probably forgot...
By Lydia Deichmann You’ll be surprised at how you can forget to bring the most practical things, so here’s a list you might not have thought of. If not, and you really have remembered everything, then you deserve a pat on the back, or buy yourself a drink(s) for having made it so far. White or blue tack: If you want to put your favourite posters up (if that’s of Justin Bieber, don’t even think about it) and your photos from your crazy nights out with your friends you going to need to bring something to put them up with. Try not to get any marks on your walls though; you’ll regret it when your deposit cheque arrives at the end of the year. Pack of cards or other games: Bringing this along is a great way to make friends, either by playing cards with your new flatmates in the kitchen or bringing them to pre-drinks. Multivitamins and flu/cold remedy: Fresher’s Week involves a large amount of drinking, minimal amount of sleep and loads of new faces and excitement, so you’re bound to be a bit run down at the end of it and there’s a large risk of getting the infamous Fresher’s Flu. Try to avoid it by taking loads of vitamins.

Cosmo, Chinese Buffet – There’s much debate in Medway student circles as to who holds the crown for best all-you-can-eat Chinese and, despite what Medwire Deputy Editor Matt Charles says, Cosmo more often comes out on top. You can find Cosmo on Chatham high street where it offers a lunchtime buffet for £6.99, which also includes dessert which is naturally all-you-can-eat, too. Probably more expensive than the average student would like, but just compensate for that by eating three weeks’ worth of food. Blue Ginger, Indian Takeaway – What fast food list would be complete without a mention of curry? Although this Rainham takeaway is maybe a little bit out of a student’s comfort zone in terms of price (around £10 for a standard curry & rice), the quality more than justifies it. Blue Ginger will deliver for free on orders over £12 and cannot come highly recommended enough. Find more of Rik’s food tips and advice at www.themedwire.co.uk

Hello from...

Heyho MEDWAY !! I’m Kent’s Students Union President 2013/14! What does that mean you ask? It means I work full time to represent all of Kent’s ~20,000 students, not only to the University but also on a local and national level! As a sabbatical team we have decided to make Medway our priority campaign this year – meaning you’ll be seeing and hearing more from us than in the past! We strongly believe Medway students should have exactly the same opportunities as their Canterbury student counterparts, therefore I am going to launch a campaign named: ‘Wouldn’t it be nice?’ The aim of this campaign will be engage as many Medway students as possible and campaign creatively to present strong case to both, Greenwich and Kent University; ultimately resulting in confirmation that the C4 building will be used as ‘multi functional student space’. This would include places for societies and sports clubs, possibly another bar, a lounge area, prayer room, quite study place? Anything at all you may want! Please get excited and get involved, the more people who engage in the campaign the stronger the case we will have. We also guarantee one of Kent full time officers will be working in Medway at least once a week throughout the entire year, to build a stronger relationship with Medway Students. Myself and Alex Brooks are both very excited about the new union partnership ‘GK Together’. The website is now officially up and running and hopefully this means a fresh start for Medway students and their Union!

Chelsea Moore, Kent Union

Hello new arrivals! Welcome to Medway, to university, and to the start of the new era of your life. The next few weeks are some of the most important you’ll ever have and it’s important to get out there and meet new friends, find new interests, and learn new skills. Your Students’ Union is here to help with all of that, we offer social spaces to chill out with your new friends, we have sports clubs and societies so you can find a new hobby, and we have an advice service to ensure that you don’t get lost along the way. Being at university isn’t always fun filled and easy going, sometimes there are challenges along the way. Also coming to university is more than getting a degree and leaving again, employers are looking to see that you really involved yourself in student life and once again your Union is here to help you. So remember, make friends and use them as your support network, let your hair down often and don’t the pressure build up too much, and most importantly have fun and make these years the most memorable.

Alex Brooks, Greenwich Union

Autumn Trends
5
Starting to feel the chill but not quite ready to hang up your shorts and crop tops for another year? Sophie Wentworth takes a look at this Autumn’s trends.
Looking at the gloomy autumn colours can be depressing when you still feel like running around in your summery neons but here are a few basic items to keep you in your summer wardrobe a little while longer without dipping too far into your pockets for a fresh autumn collection. Now we all own a pair of ankle boots, add a pair to your summery playsuit to toughen the look up a bit and make sure your feet don’t get wet as those autumn showers start to creep in. They’re also a practical wardrobe staple that will keep you steady on your feet as winter draws in, while still looking cute when you succumb to the opaques. (Leather boots, £50, asos) Or why not try the heeled version, not so practical or winter friendly but spot on trend right now if you feel like treating yourself. (Heeled leather boots, £85, also asos) As silly as this sounds, socks! They don’t have to be plain black cotton hidden from the world; they can be cute with frills, tucked over the edge of your boots as an added accessory to your summery outfit. Sounds too girly? Don’t be fooled by the frills, the socks can actually grunge up your outfit in keeping with the 90s revival seen on the autumn/ winter catwalks. (Frilly socks, various colours, £4, River Island)

when the chilly nights set in; wearable with almost anything and can be accessorised to dress your outfit up or down. All white was a major trend this summer but can be a little daunting (and dirty!) but a white blazer can help give your outfit a cool, sharp edge while keeping you in your summer trends. Another perfect transitional choice would be pastels, traditionally a spring/ summer only trend this season saw pastels creeping into the autumn/ winter runways too so this investment piece would see you through the rest of the year. (White blazer, £12, New Look. Pastel pink blazer, £50, Topshop) Another item most of us own that’s practical for day wear and casual nights. If you’re desperate to stay in the crop tops as long as possible the denim jacket could be the addition you need, wear it as a cardigan rather than an outerwear item as a cool way to cover up. (£17.99, New Look)

Discover Medway
There’s much more to Medway than what’s on campus, honest. Jade Edwards gives her top five recommendations.
The Lounge, Canterbury Street, Gillingham. This hidden gem is the best thing the Medwire has visited last year. Chill out with different shisha flavours (personally we’re fans of the double apple, but be sure to try them all!) and don’t forget to try the milkshakes. For the part animals among us you’ll also be pleased to note that The Lounge is only a stones throw away from Bliss. Evening = sorted! Serendipity Cupcake Bar & Piercing Studio, High Street, Rochester. A far cry from any dodgy looking piercing studios, Serendipity is not only the cleanest studio we’ve ever seen, but it even comes with a cupcake bar too so you can go and satisfy your sweet tooth then get a piercing. The sugar rush will make it hurt less, honest. Even if you’re not needling up, it’s still a wonderful place to stop for a natter. Rochester High Street Rochester high street is full of little boutiques where you can go to find hidden gems and bargains. It’s also the home of a number of olde worlde sweet shops and top notch cafesIf shopping isn’t your thing you can visit the historic Rochester Castle and the Cathedral Dixy Chicken, Canterbury Street, Gillingham A certain medwire editor has an undying love for Dixy Chicken and wouldn’t rest until we included in the list. Open till late most weeknights it’s the perfect take away if you’re up all night doing essays or need a drunken snack. Fort Amherst Tunnels, Khartoum Road, Chatham For the history geeks amoung us Fort Amherst is an 18th century fort build to protect the docks and its tunnels were later used in WW2. It’s not just of the history fanatics though, with Halloween round the corner, why not give yourself a fright by going down into the tunnels, you never know what is round the corner. As heavy and wintery as this sounds, the perfect cardigan is ideal for all day wear. A soft cotton cardigan can keep you warm without the heaviness of a chunky woolly winter option. Leave it open and floaty for a relaxed look during the day and wrap up to stay cosy in the evenings. (Fine knit cardigan, £7.99, H&M) Make sure to log on to our new Lifestyle and Fashion section for all the latest fashion updates at www.themedwire.co.uk

Fined by degree
How many books do you have hidden away right now and could they cost you your degree? Cecily Snowball investigates.
Library fines might only be a small matter to some, however, universities around the country are being investigated after students were denied their degrees for failing to pay up. The Office of Fair Trading surveyed 50 universities, sampling their terms and conditions, and half of the universities were viewed as ‘unfair’, which could lead to court action. Degrees had been withheld from students due to library fees or accommodation bills. The original inquiry began when several complaints from the National Union of Students about the restricstudent with the outstanding fees. Kent, Greenwich and Canterbury Christchurch have the policy of withholding library privileges until the fines have been paid. Another Medway student said the threat of being denied entry into the next year caused major concern. She said: “During my exams I managed to accumulate quite a hefty library fine. I was a little panicked because I had no idea how I was going to pay the fine and I thought it was going to affect me obtaining my exam results as well as returning for my final year. “Despite having this ridiculous library debt I was still able to get my results which was great. “The library also informed that for now my account would be frozen meaning I won’t be able to take out books until I reduced my fine to £20.” According to University of Kent Congregations office, “all outstanding debts with the University must be cleared before you can be admitted to your degree” which includes library fines.” Kent Union representative, Alex Murray, said: “The university, however, does have a policy which makes clear that overdue debts can cause results and consequently for graduation to be delayed. The cases I have been made aware of, however, relate largely to accommodation. “While these students are contractually obligated to clear debts with their university, I think that it is wholly wrong that universities hold academic results hostage for separate financial reasons. “This is a problem not just at this institution, but across the entire sector. I am glad that a challenge is finally coming through on this and I hope that there is a separation of the two contracts as a result.”

”It’s wholly wrong that universities hold results hostage”
tions on graduating with library fees. University of Kent at Medway has previously made students aware of the risks of not receiving their degree by placing posters around the campus. The OFT announced on its website that it has “opened an investigation under the Enterprise Act of 2002 considering the terms and conditions used by some universities to prevent students from graduating”. An upper cap of £20 - £25 has been imposed; however some students were not aware of this decision. A third year Politics student, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she managed to raise £80 fines at both Canterbury and Medway and was not warned about an upper cap. The Drill Hall Library declined to comment on the issue. All three institutions at Medway control the progression policy, so while the library controls the level of fees, the universities decide how to treat the

Sport
by Victoria Polley
There’s a renewed team spirit sweeping through the sports clubs on campus and it is being branded as Team Medway. The desire for the different sports at the Medway Campus to become more unified has led to the introduction of the Team Medway ethos, which will be fully implemented during the 2014/15 academic year. But while the formalities will wait until then, clubs are already beginning to integrate to strengthen their collective identity. Sten Mayunga, President of the newly named Team Medway Football Club, first proposed the idea, based on the concept of Team GB competing at the Olympics and something that has also been adopted at Canterbury under Team Kent. He said: “This initiative will improve our clubs togetherness, identity and help motivate our athletes as they will feel a part of something much bigger than the team that they are in. “You can see that the idea of being a part of a bigger team has motivated the Kent students at Canterbury by

BUCS season preview
by Sam Smith & Tom Allen
Football The men’s football first team will have high hopes for their season in South Eastern 5D, having finished second on the back of promotion. They will compete against Greenwich’s 2nd and 3rd teams, as well as Kent’s 3rd team. Medway’s 2nd team narrowly missed out on promotion from South Eastern 5B last season after finishing in 2nd place so will be aiming to go one better this season, and gain a fourth promotion in just five seasons. The 3rd team will compete in South Eastern 7B after a disappointing previous season in which they finished below the 4th team. Medway 3rd will compete in South Eastern 7B, whilst the 4th team have been moved to South Eastern 7D. The women’s football team will begin in South Eastern 2B having won South Eastern 3B last year. Rugby Medway men’s first team will compete in South Eastern 3B having also been relegated from South Eastern 2B last year, putting an end to a run of successive promotions beginning in 2008/09. Also competing in this league are Kent’s 2nd team. Cricket Men’s indoor cricket team finished rock bottom in last year’s London 1B division, losing every single game this in stark contrast to Kent’s main first team who won the league, with Canterbury Christ Church finishing third. Badminton Medway men’s will be looking to build on two consecutive second place finishes in a South Eastern 4B league which also contains Canterbury Christ Church’s first team. Meanwhile the women’s team remain in South Eastern 3A having finished a respectable third place last year.

From Netball to Rugby and everything in-between Victoria Polley and her team have rounded up all the latest goings on.

Team Medway arrives

“Feel part of something bigger”
the increase in success and participation they have had since their initiative was introduced.” Clubs are currently seeking sponsors and rebranded kit to conform and there is much enthusiasm amongst Sten’s fellow Team Medway athletes. Huw Jones, President of Medway’s Rowing Club believes the new ethos will encourage different sports to support each other. He said: “For the last few years I have had very little knowledge of how the Rugby or Football teams have got on, and I am sure they would not know about our results either.

“I am hoping the idea of ‘Team Medway’ will instill more of a campus wide sports related community spirit, and result in our athletes/players receiving more applause for their efforts and successes.” Team Medway Netball Club’s First Team Captain, Brogan Sargent added that the sports clubs were ‘all moving forward with the same idea of improving sport at Medway.’ But while the clubs may be uniting off the pitch, they may soon be competing on it. Sports Clubs and societies will soon be meeting to discuss plans for The Medway Cup, where clubs will go head to head in weekly challenges. Medway Student Committee President, Matt Keeble, hopes the cup will help to start spreading the spirit of Team Medway and will get people

supporting the new campus identity. ABOVE: The MedHe said: “I think Team Medway is a way Varsity last great idea, as it will allow us to show year. people that Medway is not just an offshoot of Canterbury or Greenwich main campuses, but it is a campus in its own right with our own sports teams and our own things going on. “I think it will go beyond sport as well and provide an identity for

Netball The women’s netball team will begin the season in South Eastern 5B, hoping to bounce back from a miserable outing in South Eastern 4B last time around which ended in relegation after failing to win a single game. Amongst their rivals this season will be Kent’s 3rd team and CCC’s 2nd team. The 2nd team fared a little better finishing 3rd in South Eastern 9B, winning four out of their ten games. They will be aiming to push on this season, and should hopefully mount a challenge for promotion. Basketball The ever-improving Men’s basketball team will be looking to improve on 3rd place in South Eastern 3B. They made excellent progress in the South Eastern Conference Cup, reaching the quarterfinals, and will hope to emulate that this season. With former professional basketball player Antonis Kesisoglou as coach, they should go from strength to strength. Women’s basketball team compete in South Eastern 3B along with CCC and Kent’s first teams. They should be

aiming for promotion, after narrowly ABOVE: Medway missing out in their final game of the Mayham last year. 2012/13 season. Tennis Medway’s tennis team will remain in South Eastern 5A, having finished fifth last year. They will want to improve on last season’s form with only one win in their last five matches, and face a tough opening fixture against Brunel’s 3rd team. Futsal Medway’s futsal team find themselves in South Eastern 1B along with CCC. They will be opening the season against University of East London 1st in what should be a challenging encounter. They have also been given a bye in the BUCS 2013/14 Futsal trophy, meaning they will enter the competition in the last 32 stage. Rowing Medway rowing team will no doubt be hoping to compete in several regattas throughout the course of the year, including the BUCS regatta at the end of April, the largest student regatta in Europe.

“I think it will go beyond sport”
all students on the campus to get behind and really celebrate what we have here at Medway.” The Medway Student Committee will be looking for support for The Medway Cup and hope to get it underway during the Spring Term.

Medway Sports Fayre
Students looking to keep active have a chance to get involved in groups and teams at the annual sports fayre. From ball sports, to athletics and to the more weird and wacky imaginings pretty much anything is out there to experience. Anyone looking to take part competitively or to simply keep fit and socialise are welcome. Societies invite students from any university on the Medway campus to make an appearance. Matilda Allerfeldt, social secretary for netball and freeride, said: “A lot of people attend and it’s where members initially get involved. But it’s not a problem if you’re unable to attend. You can always inquire about becoming a member ” And if you are worried about holding down a place as one of the first XI or XV, fret not: there are teams for all abilities. “Even if your mates aren’t interested in sport, it doesn’t mean they can’t come to the fayre too. It’s a good social event, which is worth getting out of bed for!” The event takes place in the Pilkington building from 10:30am to 3pm on September 25.
