The Nursing Student Organization
Presents a

Development Workshop for Faculty, Nursing Students and Practicing Nurses Practice, Mentoring in Nursing: Practice, Research and Education March 20, 2010 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 pm California State University, Dominguez Hills 1000 East Victoria Street, Carson, CA, 90747 Loker Student Union, 2nd floor The purpose of this workshop is to provide students and practicing nurses with evidence-based knowledge they can use to more effectively find, work and develop a relationship with a mentor in Practice, Research and Education.
After this four-hour workshop, participants will be able to: Identify two key components crucial to initiating mentoring relationships Describe at least two supportive and nurturing behaviors in the mentoring relationship Describe at least three outcomes that may be obtained through mentoring relationships for students and practicing nurses Identify two best practice models utilized for effective mentoring

8:00am – 8:30 - Registration 8:30 - 8:35 -Welcome – President, Nursing Student Organization 8:35 - 8:45 Welcome - Dr. Carole Shea, Director, School of Nursing 8:45 9:15 -Keynote Address - Ms. Kathy Harren Overview of Mentoring; Defining Mentoring; Differentiating coaching, precepting and mentoring; Using a mentor in practice, research and education Moderator – Dr. Kathy Chai 9:15 -10:00 -Panel Discussions: Panelist # 1 ( 15 mins)+ [5 minutes for Questions]: 9:15 – 9:35 - Nursing Practice: Dr. Elma Tulloch-Reid Finding and making contact with a mentor in your organization; Sustaining and nurturing the mentor-mentee relationship; Advantages and of having a mentor in your workplace; Benefits for the mentor and mentee Panelist # 2 (15 mins)+ [5 minutes for Questions, Discussions]: 9:40 – 10:00 - Nursing Research: Ms. Pilar De La Cruz-Reyes Finding and making contact with a mentor in research; Collaborating with a mentor in research activities; Sustaining and nurturing the mentor-mentee relationship; Advantages of having a research partner; Benefits for the Mentor and Mentee 10:00 – 10:30 – Break and Networking 10: 30 – 11: 45 – Panel Discussions: Panelist # 3 (15 mins)+ [5 minutes for Questions, Discussions]: 10:30 – 10: 50 - Nursing Education – As a Student – Dr Jo Ann Wegmann & Ms Lorna Diaz Finding a mentor in nursing school; Making contact with a mentor as a student; Sustaining and nurturing the mentor-mentee relationship during school; Advantages and benefits for the Mentor and Mentee Panelist # 4 (15 mins) [5 minutes for Questions, Discussions]: 10: 55 – 11: 15 - Nursing Education - As a New Graduate – Dr Edna Domingo Finding and making contact with a mentor as a new graduate; Nurturing the mentormentee relationship; Benefits for the Mentor and Mentee Panelist # 5 (15 mins) [5 minutes for Questions, Discussions] 11:20 – 11: 40 -Scholarships Available for Nursing students – Dr. Lovene Knight 11:45 – 12:00 – Closing summary -Faculty Advisor – Dr. Cynthia Johnson 12:00 – 12:15 Closing remarks - Nursing Student Organization Rep 12:15 – 12:30-– Wrap up and Evaluations
