Odysseus, a True Hero
Odysseus, the main character in this epic story The odyssey by Homer, is a hero
for many reasons during this story. He is, brave, strong, and smart which in turn helps
him throughout his tortuous journey of 20 years to finally get back home. After
wandering the sea for that long he never gave up, instead Odysseus kept his men strong
in the challenges facing them on their way to return home.

Odysseus’s trait of bravery is shown throughout this adventure very strongly.
When Odysseus faces the Cyclops he does not back down, in fact he gets him and his
men out of the trap by using the rams of the Cyclops to escape. “He sent us into the open
then. Close by, I dropped and rulled clear of the rams belly to unite the men.”(Homer
768) This quote supports that he got his men out of the trap that could’ve gotten him
killed. Another quote from this story that supports that Odysseus is very brave is when he
is facing the sirens and has to go through them, which no one has ever done before. “the
lovely voices in ardor appealing over the water made me crave to listen and I tried to say
untie me.” This shows his bravery in a wide variety.

Odysseus has the look of a hero and he can back it up because he is very strong. A
quote referencing Odysseus’ strength is “Then Scylla made her stone, washing six of my

best men from the ship.”(Homer). This shows how strong he is because Scylla took out
six of the strongest men that are with Odysseus but yet Odysseus survived, still standing
showed his toughness. Another quote showing Odysseus’ strength is “Many of the suitors
boldly try the bow but not one man can ever bend it”(802). This quote states how the
suitors for his wife could not do something he could.

Odysseus is also very intelligent on top of being brave and strong. It shows
throughout the story. When Odysseus is with the Cyclops he comes up with a plan of
escape from the cave him and his men were trapped in. “I took the wooliest ram, the
choicest of the flock hung myself under his kinkly belt.”(Homer 768) This quote clearly
shows that Odysseus is smart because if he was not smart he would not have made it out
alive from the Cyclops. Another quote that proves Odysseus is intelligent is when he is
having a conversation with the Cyclops “you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift
your promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy.”(766). Instead of Odysseus
telling the Cyclops his real name he thinks on the spot and lies to him to protect his
identity so the Cyclops could never find out who he really is.

All in all Odysseus is a hero. He is a great hero. A heroic figure that went through
almost impossible events on his journey back from the war just to return to his home and
his family and these examples are some of the reasons he is a true hero.
