The Role of Youth in the Community

Distinguished guests, beloved officials, my co mentors, comrades, to the once young and the
vigorous, high spirited young people, ladies and gentlemen. A better afternoon to each and
everyone.

It is of utmost gratitude to be speaking infront of you today. Thank you for giving me this
opportunity to share my humble thoughts about our young generation.

Our national hero once quoted, that the youth is the hope of the nation. And I say that, the
youth is the leader of tomorrow. They are our future, our tomorrow, in which we put our
confidence into.

But who are the youth? Merriam’s dictionary defines youth as that period in time when a
person reaches the age of puberty and beyond and before they are a fully mature adult. So to
say, the youth are those persons whose age belongs to the 13 to the 20’s age bracket.

Look around you, do you see these youth, these young people that I am talking about? They
play a major, major role in the development in the community and eventually in our own
country.

Let us go back to the quotation, “the youth is the leader of tomorrow”. At the back of our
minds, we might ask. “How are they going to be leaders of tomorrow if they are young,
unexperienced and innocent?” or “What roles do they play or what contributions can they
make in order to be leaders of tomorrow? “

With that, I would like to point out five important roles that the youth plays in the community.
It is from the word YOUTH.

Yearning.
They are yearning for change. The youth of today are not contented to what is given them.
They aspire for excellence, in their own field; whether it may be in the school, in the community
or for the country. They serve as the fuel for change, yearning for a better tomorrow for our
country, our community, no matter how young they can be.

Outstanding.. I am speaking to the former SK Council, to the young leaders in the Senate, in the
Local Government and the community. They are not limited, but they set an example for others
to follow them in good governance. Outstanding leaders this description is not for the old and
experienced like us, but also for the youth who are at par with us when it comes with the
standard of leadership.

Useful
Useful in the sense that they are a contributing factor to the success of whatever undertaking
the community upholds, they can be assets, if properly trained by us seasoned people, their
very own role models. Even in technology, the youth are useful, because they are the ones who
tutor us on how to manipulate things, and so it is true with many things.
Trendsetters
Trendsetters are defined as anything or any one that marks the standards of what is up to date,
what is “in” or what is “uso ngayon”. The youth plays a vital role in setting the mood for the
latest fashion, the latest discovery and ideas.
Headstarters
Headstarters are an advantage
. Why? They still have longer years to be contributors in nation building. With their vigorous
and younger age, they can do so many things, influence the co young and be pillars of change in
the community.

All of these things are tried and true but along with all these terms of the youth, allow me to
speak with the once young, our time here on earth is limited. It is our duty to guide the youth to
be even more contributors in nation building. They need an adviser, a helping friend to aid
them to become tomorrow’s leaders, to be good role models to the coming generations to
come.

To the youth present here today, do not let anyone look down on you because you are young,
bear in mind that you can do more and achieve more when we speak of development. Be
confident of yourself and of your ideas. Remember, you are the hope of our nation, the leader
of tomorrow.
