The word ‘classical’ is used in 2 different ways to describe: - Western Art Music = classical music - Music composed between the years 1750 – 1820 and displays a particular style = Classical music

The symphony A symphony is an extended composition which is usually written for orchestra It is usually made up of between 3 and 4 sections which are known as movements By the end of the lesson Describe what a typical Classical symphony is. you should be able to: Identify different elements of music from an audio recording.

In the Classical symphony the 1st movement is usually in a type of ternary structure know as sonata form.

The 2nd movement is at a slower

tempo

The 3rd movement is often based on a dance borrowed from the

Baroque

period

known as a minuet and trio.

The 4th movement is played at a fast tempo and sometimes has a tempo marking of

Form & Structure Ternary Form – ABA Binary Form – AB Rondo Form – ABACAD etc. Each letter represents a new section of music which usually contrasts itself from the other sections by using a particular element of music.
