Tourism and Hospitality Sector Tourism industry plays a key role in the country s economic growth. Though the global economy is in the grip of a second recession it is time to convert the new challenges and explore the new avenues of tourism sector. The Indian hospitality industry has a big role to play at this crucial juncture. It is paramount important that the development activities in the hospitality industries have to be planned and implemented in such a way where the maximum potential needs to identified and tapped. However this shouldn t happen at the cost of environmental exploitation or anything else. The roadblock to sustained growth of tourism is attributed to lack of proper infrastructure development and lackadaisical approach of State Governments at top and Local Self Governments at bottom. This approach needs to be rectified and Public-Private partnership venture to be explored. Likewise a hospitality friendly culture needs to be nurtured both at the levels of Government and participants level as a whole. Prior to recession India s attention on tourism was European and East European countries. The current Euro Zone crisis does not allow the regular traveler to venture into joy ride. However the hospitality industry needs to focus on Middle East, West Asian and Pacific countries for the years to come, in addition to boost domestic tourism. Though the concept of Public-Private participation has gained momentum, the role played by the Government is yet to reach a level playing field. Instead of direct intervention to the sector as arbitrary controller the government should act as a facilitator. One positive note is that the government has realized the economic gains from hospitality industry and it is working faster to clear the current road blocks which is a good sign. As per the official record available the number of foreign tourists that visited the country from January- December, 2010 was about 4.93 million as compared to 4.46 million foreign tourists during the same period in 2009, registering a growth rate of 10.4 per cent. The Foreign Exchange Earnings went up to a whopping US$ 12.88 billion during the period January-Dec 2010 as compared to US$ 10.67 billion during January-Dec 2009. The growth rate registered was 20.7 per cent. It remains to be seen how far will be able to offset the deficit of arrival of foreign tourists in the current financial scenario.
