Day

Today was our first day at the turning machine, which is used to shorten the
length of metals, plain them, and make threads on the metal. We were given
basic introduction to the machine regarding saftey and how to work with the
machine. We worked on a sample rod with different blades which have
different functions like long graining, plaining, at angles etc.
Today we started to make the parts of our machine. The first part we did was
a small rod which was supposed to be plained from both ends and then
threaded. We started by measuring the rod and plained it according to the
required length. After this step, we started to make threads on both the sides.
Our group finished this part today.
Today we worked with another metal rod which was supposed to be at a
length of 100 mm and was supposed to have threading on both ends. We
started by bringing the rod at the desired length by plaining it accordingly.
After this step, we started to make threads on both the sides.
Today we were supposed to make a screw with a definate length of head and
screw following which we had to thread the body. We started by taking 75
mm length and started to plain the head. After plaining the head, we did long
graining till 66 mm length. All these processes involve different blades. The
next step was to make a small bottom for the screw which was 4 mm in
length and 5 mm in diameter. After this process, we worked on the bottom of
the head with a blade which shapes it at an angle of 45o . Followingly, we
decreased the length of the head to 15 mm. The last step was to thread. Half
of the screw was threaded by the machine and the rest was done by us using a
manual threader which works on the principle of basic rotation.
Today we used the drilling machine to drill the remaining holes in our metal
pieces. Following which we also made threading in those holes. The last part
that was to be made from the turning machine were two rods which were to
be plained from both the ends, and were to have a length of 100 mm.

No internship on Saturdays.

A turning machine is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform
various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation, facing, or
turning, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which
has symmetry about an axis of rotation.

We performed various tasks using the turning machine. From the aforementioned daily
reports, the parts made on this machine were: a screw, 2 rods of length 100 mm, a small rod
threaded on both ends, and 1 big rod threaded on both ends. The machine is operated by a
start handle and a break peddle. We can change speed of rotation by the lever on the left part
of the machine. This machine works in two directions, back and forth, and in and out. There
are stict satey rules with this machin which have to be followed, like wearing glasses and
tying hair if long. The blades used for different operations on the metal were also different.
For example, the image below illustrates long graining, and this process is carried out by a
special type of blade which is exactly 90o.
