Requisites for an Ultrasound Technology Program
An ultrasound technician has a good career path ahead, as he gets to work in the rapidly growing and advancing field of ultrasonography. A Physician's role in examining internal structures for review and diagnosis is made easier by ultrasound technicians, as they use specialized equipment that emits and interprets reflected sound waves into an image. The physicians further use these equipment to examine organs for a check on diseases or abnormalities and monitor conditions such as pregnancy.

Education and Training
Fulfillment of certain ultrasound technician requirements is mandatory before one starts his/her career in this field. With multiple options available, it is not difficult for a student to realize his/her goal of becoming an ultrasound technician. A technical college, community college, and other similar community-based institutions, such as vocational schools are by and large some options available for the students to seek their educational requirements. Hospital offer training programs with guaranteed employment after the course is complete. A two-year associate's degree with specialization in sonography and ultrasound technologies is being offered by hospitals offering training programs. Those looking for a short term one - year certification course, can get it availed easily, as few hospitals do provide such courses. One gets enough employment opportunities with this course, however; the only limitation will be in terms of earning potential. A fouryear degree program is an apt course for those looking for quality education, which is backed by a potential earning opportunity as well as an advanced career option in ultrasound technology. Students with medical background will find it easier to get enrolled across any school offering the program, as few schools prefer students with medical background. Hence, a thorough research in medical field is imperative for starters to ascertain their interests, before applying for any program.

Certain requirements to become successful as an ultrasound technician
Apart from attending ultrasound technician schools, there are other requirements that must be fulfilled. The subjects that student choose are linked to their desired career path, hence familiarity with such subjects is required for an ultrasound technician program. A study in human anatomy and physiology, ultrasound equipment, patient care, ethics, physics, ultrasound physics, obstetrics, and pathophysiology form the curriculum of most of the programs. Basic knowledge of subjects like English, physics and biology is mandatory for some programs. To complete an overall training program certain intangible skills are also taught, to make the individuals capable of effectively practicing their professions and to enhance their ability to successfully complete the training.

Such courses by and large impart interpersonal skills which, plays an important role in helping ultrasound technicians in dealing with patients on daily basis. The technician will have to face certain critical conditions like that of an expecting mother, who will be nervous and would want warm presence during the procedure.

Work Environment
There are two main job locations for an ultrasound professional in a hospital; either they are placed in the diagnostic area or at the bedside of the patients for conducting mobile ultrasounds, as the patients cannot be transported. While some are also placed in physician offices and outpatient diagnostic imaging clinics. All types of working options are available for an ultrasound technician; some employers hire them to work on full-time 40-hour week's basis, whereas some provide flexible working hours. As opposed to the technicians working in hospitals or clinics, some technicians move around the world while performing their job, such technicians are called as "travelling techs". Significant roles like that of a mobile sonographer is also played by an ultrasound tech, wherein they master the art of operating mobile sonography machines that are transported in vans and used for patients who are unable to travel to hospitals or clinics for their exams. Mobile sonography plays an important role in a battlefield where, it is responsible to provide emergency help to wounded soldiers.

Certification
A certification is always recommended though not compulsory to complete the training. A student transforms into a certified professional once he clears the examination conducted by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or ARDMS. The certificate will be seen as a proof by an employer, as it will demonstrate how proficient the candidate is? And how efficiently will he perform on the job? ARDMS certifies individuals in various specializations such as mammography, abdominal, echocardiography, neurosonology and vascular sonography. Higher certifications provide better job opportunities and better salary.
