The Education system in India – A brief outline
The Education system in India is well known for providing students with a high quality of excellent education. Most Universities in India offer courses in a Bachelors degree of a subject but there are many that offer PhD’s as well as Masters Degrees. The Ministry of Human Resource Development indirectly controls the Universities but the administration and design of the syllabus is done by the State and Central government agencies. These Universities are therefore referred to as State Universities of Centrally run universities. There are other authorities in charge of other types of universities like Deemed Universities, Open Universities and Agricultural universities. Every one of India’s numerous states has various universities falling under each category. Colleges are also affiliated to Universities in India, except for some that are autonomous, here the degree is from the University but has the name of the college as well. There are around 138 autonomous colleges in India and many of these are technical, engineering as well as business colleges. Colleges in India award degrees in various subjects after a successful completion of the course. In a similar fashion, there are various schools in India that are also governed by different boards and the most well known of these are the Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE), State boards of Education and the Council for Indian School Certification Examination and the National Institute of Open schooling. The aim of all these boards has always been to improve the education system and to bring more literacy to the masses. The school boards in India have structured the levels of schooling into a Primary, Secondary and a High school level. There are many well run schools in India that follow these boards like Military Schools, Air Force Schools, Catholic/Missionary run schools, International schools, Kendriya Vidyalaya’s, Montessori Schools etc. Some of the best schools for the physically challenged are Schools for the Deaf and Dumb, Schools for the Blind as well as Schools for Gifted children. For those students who are unable to attend a full time course due to disability or for working students there are many alternative ways in India to earn a degree or a diploma in most streams. There are graduate and post graduate courses in India available that a student can study for through correspondence courses and online courses. Many of the well known universities as well as colleges in India offer these choices for courses in India. An engineering college is what

many students aspire to get into and all of the best known Engineering colleges have entrance tests. Most engineering colleges are affiliated to the AICTE while B.Tech courses from BITS, IIT’s etc have their own entrances. Ample information on all of these is easily available online.
