Statement of Jeffrey S. Lena Regarding Release

of Documents in Doe v. Holy See
In John V. Doe v. Holy See, a case against the Holy See and a province of the Friar Servants of Mary, the plaintiff states that he was sexually abused in 1965 by Servite priest Andrew Ronan in Portland, Oregon. For years, the plaintiff's lawyers have accused the Holy See of transferring Ronan to Portland with prior knowledge that Ronan posed a danger to minors. The federal courts have dismissed most of the Doe lawsuit. Today, to assist the Oregon federal district court in resolving the sole remaining jurisdictional issue in the case, the Holy See is releasing all known documents relating to Ronan held by the Roman Curia. Like other documents previously produced by the Servite Order and the Portland Archdiocese, these newly-released documents show that the plaintiff's lawyers' long-standing accusations against the Holy See are false. The Holy See was not involved in Ronan's transfers, including the transfer to Portland, and had no prior knowledge that Ronan posed a danger to minors. Instead, the documents confirm that the Servite Order first informed the Holy See of Ronan's misconduct when Ronan petitioned for laicization in February 1966 - after the plaintiff's abuse and that the Holy See granted the petition for laicization just weeks later. The plaintiff's lawyers never had support for their calumnious accusations against the Holy See. They have nonetheless chosen to misuse the legal system as a vehicle to pursue a broader agenda - a decision that has misled the public and wasted considerable resources. Notwithstanding the plaintiff's lawyers' regrettable conduct, it is important to remember that any abuse suffered by this plaintiff, or any other victim of sexual abuse, is deplorable.

Most Rev. aria dear Father General: Father Andrew Ronan came to me this morning to discuss the letter, you sent fctim concerning the possibility of his accepting the office of Master in the College in Rome. I am very sorry to have to tell you that he must not be elected Master. ^ While Father Ronan begged me not to' tell you the real reason I feel and know I must do so in a matter so important, and consequently it is in the utmost confidence that I tell you. The reason is simoly this, that I removed him from Benburb because of homosexuality with the students, which he feeely admitted and confessed when the fact had been brought to the Prior by one of the students. This was found out on my bisit to Benburb after the last General Chapter in June of 1959, and I removed him to the U. S.A. immediately. We lost vocations as a result"of this in Ireland and we are most fortunate that more scandal did not come. I am sure you will agree that to put him back in a seminary would be contrary to all prescripts of the Church and to common sense. T-hile there has been no known recurrence of this problem, all the experts in this perversion agree'that there is no permanent cure." I em expecting the worst any day here at St. Philip's but much better that it occur here than^in a seminary. In addition to the above problem which suffices in itself there are other reasons as follows, why he should not be elected: even

1. During the recent visitation of this community he was accused by some of drinking too much end too often. I am afraid it is true. Incidentally when he drank at uenburb it would seem that his difficulties began. 2. The Prior here, Fr. Grtmann, has indicated many times that he feels Father Ronan is a strange character. 3. Looking back now on his record as Master of Novice* at Benburb, as his students are turning out in l i f e , it seems more that probable that his judgment on them was very poor indeed. Because of all this, it would be a thousand times better to elect Father McELwain than Father Kenan. However, I still oppose the election of Fr. lie El wain for good reasons already submitted. Again I am most sorry to have to send you this report but in conscious I must tell the whole truth always in these cases.
