Our purpose is to: Follow Jesus Together We do this by: Opening our hearts to people and to Christ in worship and fellowship, so that we know God and each other more fully, Opening our minds to deepen our Christian faith, understand our heritage, and think together to solve common problems, and Opening our doors in welcome and hospitality, even as we go out of those doors to invite people into God's church and be in service to all of our neighbors everywhere.

The Voice From the Pastor I never was much of a film watcher until I discovered Bollywood films. I like them because they’re colorful, have lots of music and dancing humor. They are often about relationships and family dynamics. There is usually a mother who is a key figure in the film. They are, most of them, truly family films. In one film, whose Hindi title would mean nothing to you, the female lead character is on a plane. The plane is flying through turbulence, and she begins to recite the Lord’s Prayer in Hindi. This may not seem remarkable until you consider that this is a Hindu character. Would a Hindu in India really recite the Lord’s Prayer? The answer is yes. Hindus borrow from other religious traditions, even prayers. So why not borrow the most important prayer from the largest religion in the world—Christianity? After all, the Lord’s Prayer is appropriate in so many situations! When we need to put things in perspective, we can pray “Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory” (the power is not mine but God’s). When we want to seek God’s will, “thy Kingdom come.” When we long after luxuries, we are reminded to ask for the basics: “Give us this day our daily bread.” When we’ve strayed, we can pray “forgive us our sins.” When we’re tempted to be bitter and angry, we can say, “as we forgive those who sin against us.” When we just want to remember that God loves us like a parent loves a child, we pray “Our Father.” If the Lord’s Prayer can show up on the lips of a movie character from India, where only about 2% of the country is Christian, there must be a lot to it. Let’s take advantage of this jewel of a prayer, and pray it often.

We are very thankful that some of you have chosen to give gifts of stock to the church. They have added to our income and helped us finish last year on a good note. We have a concern, however. The way most of these gifts come in to the church means that the church does not have a record of who gave them. This means that we cannot give donors a (tax record) statement showing their gift . If you donate stock to the church, please also inform our financial secretary, Shirley Felland or our Finance Committee chairperson, Dave Stricker. Then we can send you a letter affirming your gift. “Saving Jesus” It’s an odd title for a study. How do we save the savior? In point of fact, we can’t, but we can take a closer look at what Jesus said and try to achieve a better understanding of Jesus. We can get closer to Jesus’ concern for the least and the lost, to his real concern for love and justice. The study uses video segments from leading scholars in the areas of Biblical studies, Church History and Theology. The study raises questions about who Jesus was, what he taught, and how he has been regarded through the ages. If you would like to be part of this study, come at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays or 1 p.m. on Thursdays. For more information, talk to Pastor Jim.

The Voice Mission Offering for February The mission offering for February will go to UMCOR Relief for Haiti. The Voice February News & Notes : Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator

Sunday School  We would be happy to have volunteers for teaching and assisting. Our materials are well done and easy to use. We have opportunities to use your talents and gifts in the Creation Station, HOLYWOOD (showing related videos with activity and teaching pages), Tent of Tales (storytelling and reading, and Games (all printed and organized for your tailoring and set-up), Cooking Corner (yummy food to enhance the bible stories we are hearing).  Our February Rotation will continue our journey with Jesus from the manger to the cross. We will meet many new people as we listen to the stories of Jesus and his Disciples. Students will learn about the places we find Jesus as he does miracles and uses parables to teach us very important lessons about how to live as God calls us to live. We will use maps, books, videos and some very interesting craft projects to help us learn and remember the wondrous messages found in the Scriptures.  Students and staff will be working on some special Valentines for a short time each Sunday. The message on them is that Jesus loves you and so do we!! These will be delivered to the Larson House.  Families please note that we will be handing out Registration Forms for Sunday School to all students from the 2 year old class through grade 6. Confirmation students will also be given this form. These are essential to updating and correcting information we have for each student. It will save money and much time and effort if you could fill them out when you get them and leave them in the office, my mailbox or give them to one of the Sunday School teachers. We are hoping we will not have to mail out many of the forms and then track each one individually. We want to have records current and information correct as we plan for classes and events. Thank you for your help. Family Friendly Friday Film is a Valentines Day Special Join us February 11 at 7 pm .for A Charlie Brown Valentine, Be My Valentine Charlie Brown & Veggie Tales “You Are Special”  There will be a Special Valentine for all children.  Tell your friends about this great opportunity for family entertainment. We want to reach out to as many people as possible.  We welcome volunteers to provide a simple snack, set up, clean up, and help during the film. This Mission of caring is “going and growing”!  February is the month for our Camping Emphasis!  Be sure to visit the display in Fellowship Hall, Encourage children and adults to take a look and see what wonderful opportunities for a great adventure are offered at our Wisconsin Conference camps.  Sunday February 20th we will be sharing some information and highlights of this ministry during worship services.  We cover one half of the camping fee. If any additional assistance is needed you are encouraged to call Pastor Jim or I. We want everyone to have the opportunity to attend. Camping experiences are available for children, youth, and adults. I would like to share this prayer from Guide My Feet by Marian Wright Edelman well known child advocate. It seems fitting for this month where we focus on Valentines Day. It is wondrous to know that the love of God is true and real and not the Hallmark version we see marketed today. God help me to weave a tapestry of love and not hate in my children, a spirit of tolerance and caring, and a dedication to freedom for all and not just some. God help me to sow seeds of peace and justice in my children’s hearts today. With Love and Prayers for a new year filled with God’s Blessings, Mary Baker

The Voice UMW NEWS

We started 2011 with a program about bees and beekeeping. Since the hives are rather more quiet in winter than in summer and their inhabitants are rather less obvious it might seem like an odd time to talk about bees. It was a great time to talk about bees. Our speaker, local beekeeper and church member Don Pritchard had us all envisioning backyard hives! Don gave an extremely informative speech and I, for one, learned much. For instance, the crops we see every spring and summer as we drive around our state are generally not the kind beneficial to bees. Imagine all those acres of crops and not being able to utilize them. A couple of things we can do is to voice our wishes to have the roadsides planted with specific plants that would help (you can probably ask Don about that) and to plant things in your own yards that state that they are attractive to butterflies. Thank you Don. And I would like to say to you all to seek out Don and his fellow beekeeping enthusiasts when you think about buying honey…it really does make a difference. But that’s another whole presentation ; ) Our business meeting mainly focused on what’s coming in 2011, namely, retreats and Green Team focus and School of Christian Mission and the other programs we have planned for our monthly meetings to keep us connected to the big picture. We also have some new people on board and are trying to organize another circle. If you are at all interested in checking out UMW please, please, PLEASE come to a meeting. Enjoy the fellowship of women and ask questions or just observe. Our February 10th meeting will focus on women in the military with Eileen Bennett as the guest speaker. Devotions will be by Mary Baker and Spiritual Growth by Kerrie Shea. We will begin with a snack and devotions at 7:00pm. I hope to see you there. Your UMW President, Peggy Goetsch

New Birth Congratulations to Brian and Brenda Hamilton on the birth of their daughter, Leah Grace. Leah was born on January 10th. She weighed 4lbs. 11oz. and was 18 inches long. Leah has four sisters and a brother waiting for her at home. Congratulations to the whole family!

Women are observing the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial on Friday, March 11th. Anyone interested is invited to the church library between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The theme for this year is “Give the Gift of Love.” If you cannot come to the church library, you may participate at home. Resources are available for your use. The Call to Prayer and Self-Denial is a special observance for United Methodist Women. Through it they are challenged to engage in prayer and to reflect upon stewardship as they respond to needs in specific areas of the mission program of the church. The Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offering in 2011 will support the Retirement Benefits Fund. This fund provides pensions and health care for retired United Methodist Women deaconesses and missionaries. Please consider participating in this observance.

The Voice Your Feedback is Helpful

We would like to remind the congregation that the Staff Parish Relations Committee is interested in your input and comments about the staff, how well we are all doing (including this SPRC Committee) at meeting the needs of the membership. We invite your comments and feedback directly to any one of us and really hope you will take the time to provide us that feedback. The Committee is charged with the staffing responsibilities in the church, which includes hiring people for the paid positions and then evaluating the performance of those people. The positions include the Pastor, Church Secretary, Treasurer, Music Director, Choir and other Music Group Directors, Nursery Staff, and Custodian. These are important positions in this church and represent a significant financial commitment to support them each year. We work each year at keeping these positions filled. We try to meet twice each year with each staff member to discuss the work they do and the input we have for them. Your input is welcome and a necessary part of helping as all serve this church. The current membership of the Staff Parish Relations Committee includes the following: Rhonda Miller Kelly Green Tessie Sharrow Phil Waterworth
